I purchased this book as required reading for a Christian Leadership course during my Masters work in Theology. If one can apply the term "blockbuster" to a theology book I am of the strong opinion this work of McGrath is certainly deserving of that title. He has amassed a number of readings from across the Christianity time table that includes the patristic, medieval, Reformation, and modern time periods. He has carefully chosen primary sources to build this enormous compilation of brief selections spanning centuries to provide the reader with a comprehensive anthology rich in Christian historical value.Even the most uneducated of readers will be left with a sense of strong understanding and accomplishment after tackling this volume from McGrath and should be left wanting more information from those areas of piqued interest. The breadth of Christian leadership provided here allows one the luxury of sampling a tremendous variety of works that without such an effort would never be fulfilled by many students and readers. McGrath's compilation and system of presentation here directs the scholar to seek further details in those areas of greatest interest.McGrath presents each individual by way of a brief introduction and background followed by an actual excerpt from the individual's writing before offering comments which offer a summation of the topic at hand and closes each with a short group of questions meant to be thought provoking for the student/scholar. This entire process is repeated for each leader and creates a want and desire for additional research, all from a mere one to three pagesThis book is one of those rare instances where it is not highly critical for one to start at the front cover and work your way methodically to the back cover. That can be done of course, but it is written in a manner to allow the reader to jump from one time period to another depending on the interests and needs of the reader. One should find that the later leaders often will quote from and build upon works of earlier leaders owing to their recognition of the importance given to earlier works. An aspect of this book that I felt was compelling was the strong desire to have wanted to listen to some of these leaders in person as they expounded upon their beliefs and understanding of theology during the time period of their life and works.I can remember when I first got this book in the mail I quickly did a perusal of the contents and could quickly determine this isn't your ordinary textbook. It was full of summaries of stories from various Christian leaders that span from the earliest Christian churches to the present time, an encyclopedia of sorts in a single volume. I thought, how will there be anything worthwhile to be gleaned from such a work. Oh what that thought process ever wrong. This has become an often sought reference even into later courses to help in the search for true scholarly research, a great foundation upon which more research would be built from.This work from McGrath is highly recommended and has become a mainstay in my theology reference library.
In "Christian Theology: An Introduction," McGrath sets out to write a comprehensive account of Christian theology. He succeeds. He sets out also to make it an unbiased account. He succeeds again.Of course, this book is as comprehensive as a 536-page book can be, and that is pretty darn comprehensive; the book has large pages and small text. McGrath often refers to things he had talked about earlier in the book (the specific in-text citations were helpful here). He effectively pulls the most important components of each view he summarizes so that later he can develop them further when considering a different discipline of Christian theology. For example, in the chapter 17, “Christianity and World Religions,†he brings together Karl Barth’s views on the person of Christ (chapter 11) and his views on salvation (chapter 13) to demonstrate how they are all interconnected in Barth’s worldview.McGrath is as objective as anyone can ever expect a theologian to be on a topic like Christian theology. He is honest with every position he summarizes, providing its best arguments and its strengths and weaknesses. On most issues, it is nearly impossible to discern exactly on what side McGrath stands. Perhaps such an eminent Oxford University scholar should be expected to be able to so carefully discuss ideas he has studied his entire life. Being the fifth edition, this book has also probably faced enough scrutiny to fine-tune it into this unbiased textbook.Probably in hopes of being objective, McGrath omits first-person pronouns. This results in many passive sentence constructions and thus, sometimes, wordiness. Although this wordiness annoyed me, it usually was unnoticeably because the content was interesting. McGrath is, nevertheless, a great writer and explains everything in plain language, and this book is easy to understand for a beginner in theology.This book read like a book on history more than anything else, although this is due mostly to the nature of Christian theology. Such a discipline can only consist largely of looking back at what theologians have written in the past and revising their ideas to accommodate the ways society has since developed. I highly recommend this book to any student of theology or world religions.
When one thinks about a book on Christian Theology, one expects to find a book about Christian doctrine as outlined in the Bible, i.e. a discussion of the basic principles of Christian belief. That's what I was expecting. This book is not what I expected. But it's much more. This book explores at an introductory level all the various forms of what can be considered Christian Theology including that which is developed from reading scriptures as well as other ideas.One might wonder what profit there is in studying an idea that some guy made up 1,200 years ago or some belief that was derived from a misreading or incorrect translation of the Bible. But I think it's important to understand where these false beliefs came from. For that reason, it's a valuable resource. It's a book that all Christians should read.
I first read this book in the church library and was very impressed. I decided to get my own copy so I could write all over it! This book is organized differently from most textbooks so you get an overview of major events, then go into the details. I found this approach very logical and keeps the interest of amatuers like me. I also got the readings in theology that goes with it, and that enhances the study. This book is written for college level, does not promote any demonimation or theories. I have found this self study very useful in evaluating current events in Christianity.
