I'm retired from the military, and like many retirees, I have read a LOT of books about the military and its operation. Years ago, I read Moore's first book, and I was impressed with the descriptions of combat as well as the day-to-day stuff.I was disappointed with this book. No part is bad. It just wasn't as good as I had hoped. The section on Vietnam in particular was a huge letdown. I was expecting some stories of combat or strategic planning, but it was essentially an explanation of how a new recruit wound up in Special Forces, then got injured and sent home. It's interesting and parts are funny, but the major battles and quickly sketched, and the battle in which the main character gets injured doesn't go into much detail. He doesn't remember exactly what happened, so we don't see much of what happened. Again, we get a quick sketch of the results of the battle, and we see him a while later. It's definitely not what I had hoped for.The second section covers much of the same material that was covered in 'Black Hawk Down', and I'll just stop here and say go read THAT book, which is a multiple-award-winning exploration of the events in Mogadishu. I was not involved in our first trip to the Gulf, but many of my friends were, and again, this seems like a collection of quick sketches of stories I heard from friends. Finally, several of my buddies were in Afghanistan. For me, this was the most interesting section. This section of the book matched their descriptions, but it was the only section in which I felt like I was really hearing new stories and finding out things that I didn't know.If you haven't read the other books, and you don't read much military history, then this may be a very interesting book. For those who read a lot of books in this area, you may find it a letdown, as I did.
I have read Robin Moore's The Green Berets and The French Connection. I suspect that Col. Lennon probably wrote a large part of this book. There are numerous editing errors as well as some errors which I hope are editing rather than writing errors. The idea of telling the story through the activities of three widely disparate solders who eventually come together as Special Forces troops in Afghanistan and the 2003 Iraq war is interesting but it's done a little clumsily. Also, by using this method, part of the story is not Special Forces but covers units such as the 10th Mountain Division. These minor criticisms aside, there is a lot of information in this book concerning American troops and their units. A lot of adventure too. But at about 92%, the action pretty much ends and there is a preachy, sort of rambling ending followed by an epilogue. Three and a half stars.
Very informative book for me, as I haven't really read about this group of military. Again, I am always amazed at the fact that this brotherhood volunteers to do this kind of career. Also I enjoyed the marked steps over their time of inception to what they do today. I'm the daughter of a WW II veteran, my father was a German solider who fought on the Russian front during 1941-42. He didn't talk about it much, but I read Hitler 1941-43. It gave me a real appreciation for these wonderful souls who place their lives in danger for the rest of us. When my father, after escaping east Berlin to West Berlin, tried to start up anew there wasn't the help he needed to take care of his children and wife. So they scraped together the money and immigrated to Canada and that's when I was born. Then I married an American and now I'm here. Back to the book, having been raised by a veteran and seeing the after effects, his nightmares never left him, I am in awe of the people who truly and willingly put everything on the line for their country. Well written, had some disappointments with his actions. They should have never been captured, they were outsmarted by the viet cong, amazing. It was an interesting how the viet cong and the north vietnamese did not agree with their philosophies.

I thought this read would be about the exploits (action) but I was disappointed.It was like reading a daily diary on an Armybase.
Gave it five because I couldn't give it the six that More deserves owing to his history with the Regiment.
