Beginning with the bals of the 17th century, the book takes a look at this lost tradition of costume balls, which peaked in the time of Café society in the 1950's. It covers the most famous balls (aka parties) from Paul .Poiret's 'two thousand and one night's ball,' Truman Capote's 'Black and White' Ball in the 1960's and some of the later and earlier less know parties.The book steps back in time to a period where people spent weeks preparing for parties and showed up in costumes that rival any modern day opera. It is filled with inspiration for designers and people interested in that period in time. The book is very large - more of a 'coffee-table' size. It comes in a cardboard pocket.The only reason my rating is not 5 stars is that ,when I placed my order for this book - probably because of the weight- I received a few copies with crushed sides, before I finally got a 'clean' copy. The book is a definite 5 stars plus, the packaging would be 2 stars less.If you love disappearing into a lost time of beauty and imagination, this is the book for you.

This is a beautifully crafted story comic. I will give a 10 to all the artists that drew, painted, designed actions – emotions on the stories. I particularly liked ‘Somewhere over San Juan, Puerto Rico’ P68, Gabo and Will Rosado did excellent transition between colors, which transported me as well as the Borikena to a time past with Taino chief Yuisa.Other great stories which I considered good writing as their stir emotions of those of us in the ‘diaspora’: Guillermina (p79), Maestro (p92), A Yellow Sky (p23 – this one reminds me of the Chinese restaurant in downtown Gurabo), and so many others.There are some stories that I noticed had a ‘political motivated slant’ to them; A Pitirre (p88), Buscando America (p50), Resistance (p152), The Puerto Rico of Tomorrow (p158), a guided ‘Pro-independence’ message?. Having these stories are important to share but guiding them in the comic as it is all representative of all Puerto Ricans is a fallacy. We all occasionally feel we are like the ‘Aquaman’ (p116) - half Human and half Altean; or half Puerto Rican and half American. There is bad stuff from the histories of either side, as well as good stuff. The comic however, strips the American side as it has been the only evil force of our demise in defining who we really are. We cannot be hypocrites in wanting to be recognized as American citizens during the bad times of a storm, but then wanting to be a Republic when things are good and convenient (p159, Carmen Yulin can’t have it both ways). For this reason I give it 4 stars, as the comic may not reach a great populance because of not coming from a more neutral position (there are ways to share the message without polarizing).The futuristic stories are interesting, “Bohio Girasol 2050” (p164) has great artistic work of how the future is hopeful and how it may look like if we all work together or at least try. I beleive this story will be representative of not just Puerto Rico, but many towns in mainland USA and other countries.I like the overall topic of finding heroes in all of us, by just doing our part. Kudos to the new superhero 'La Borinquena' and Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez for the idea. I hope to see La Borinquena embark in journeys around the world doing good and helping people learn more about us boricuas.To the artists – thank you for sharing your work.

It's a great book about a story that needs to be told about our Beautiful island, our people and the struggle that they're still facing 9 months after the hurricanes.Hopefully it'll reach as many as possible till we all understand that the people of Puerto Rico are still in need of help.PUERTO RICO NO SE LEVANTA, PUERTO RICO NUNCA A CAIDO!

Being Puerto Rican and having always wanted to be a part of the comic book world this book means a lot to me. I'm not the illustrator that I wanted to be when I was a kid, but I'm a writer and the stories in this book have hit the spot. The artwork from the varying artists is incredible and I really enjoyed the visual story telling difference used by each illustrator. Edgardo Miranda-Rodgriguez is a trailblazer and my heart is full with appreciation for his work to get this comic together in order to raise money for Puerto Ricans and to tell our tales of pain and resilience.!Saludos y mil gracias!

This charity book features excellent art and writing. Definitely check it out, it’s a collection of short stories.

When I purchase this comic book, I had an idea of what it was. I did not know the actual content. I bought it to contribute towards rebuilding Puerto Rico. This comic mix fiction with true stories. Living in the dark short story triggered my own experience from Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria. I cried while reading the story because It relived my experience through the hurricane. No worries Maria made me stronger. Great content! Well written! The animations are awesome!

Bought the two comics...La Borinqueña and Ricanstruction....like both of them...will continue buying these comics if the artist continues releasing them

I didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as I did. I loved the idea of an F+B-oriented novel, but I was scared the book would wind up more a tirade about restaurant industry hardships than an actual story. It’s not that at all. This is a romantic-comedy with the restaurant shenanigans as the backdrop.The setup: in the span of one day, Sibby loses her job and discovers her boyfriend is being unfaithful. Rough. But she’s lucky—her friend hooks her up with a waitressing gig at a nice Italian restaurant. And here a workplace romance blooms. The primary conflict lies in Sibby being afraid of a new relationship, and in her wanting to keep the romance secret (she’s fallen for her manager) to avoid accusations of favoritism from the other coworkers. At times I found myself annoyed—Sibby, you could be so happy if you’d just let yourself!—but I’m pretty sure that’s the point. She’s her own worst enemy. She’s also an adorable, klutzy smart-ass (and our narrator), so this conflict never becomes too dark of a cloud over her head.I like how the incidents with strange restaurant customers and eccentric employees serve to develop a wonky (yet believable) atmosphere. They never steal the limelight. And for all my fear that the book would be more F+B diatribe than character/plot centric, I actually wound up wanting more restaurant interactions. Most of the ordeals Sibby faces—while fun—rarely become as crazy as you might expect it to get behind the scenes in a restaurant. I had a couple quibbles (Aidan may be a little too perfect; an alias revelation that felt a little out of the blue), but super minor stuff. Tales of a New York Waitress is breezy and well-written and funny: the perfect feel-good read to cozy-up with at the end of a rough day.

Where do I start? This book is hilarious. Seriously hilarious. Which can get you into trouble. Imagine, if you will, early morning in Manhattan. Deep underground in a subway car, the occupants are partially asleep, it's barely light out, and they're going to work. The silence of the car is broken by the sound of laughter. Loudly. Continously. As if one body, the occupants stare at a woman laughing so hard that tears are streaming down her face. In front of her face is a Kindle.They growl...In a crappy mood? Read this book. In a good mood? Read this book.

The comical story of a girl whose life has just been turned upside down. She makes being a hot mess hilarious.When you left in the morning, your life was perfectly boring. You had a job, a live in boyfriend and you were okay with your life. Sometimes it takes a total shake up to get you where you were meant to be.Sibby is super witty and a total klutz. Everyday activities for Sibby bring everyone else comic relief. She’s trying to find her way. No more boring office job and she’s secretly dating her hot boss. Life is looking up for Sibby.This is Sibby’s story of finding happiness and love and overcoming her baggage. A light hearted read that will make you laugh and smile the entire time.

I never, EVER review anything, but this deserved it. I am a voracious reader, so books like this are often consumed and forgotten rather quickly. This one is hilariously different. I constantly say that my life is a walking disaster, but I’d read parts of this aloud to my husband who agreed that this character has it worse! We laughed and laughed. I hope someone picks up the movie rights to this and does a good job with the film. I’d definitely pay to see it.Things I liked:1. Hilarious2. Minimal profanity (this doesn’t bother me, but it limits who I can share books with)3. No raunchy sex scenes (again, this doesn’t bother me, but it was refreshing to have a different plot focus)4. Those beginning of the chapter definitions

I am an avid reader, but I didn’t anticipate being sucked into Sibby’s life the way I was.You will be able to relate to the characters on a level that will surprise you. The sense of humor, the cringe worthy accidents and true to life relatability made this an amazing read.The main characters’ wit and roll-with-the-punches-life-throws attitude make anyone fall in love with her.I laughed harder than I have at a book in longer than I can recall, and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Immediately bought the second in the series and spent hours wrapped in it.This book has not yet had the chance to enrapture enough audience, but I hope to help change that! Spread the word- totally worth the read.

I started this book with very high expectations, and I ended up laughing myself to the end. As a total klutz, I really felt Sibby's pain, so I totally get where she is with her life. Aiden, is one wonderful book boyfriend that is there when needed, even thou Sibby refuses to go public with their relationship. If you like laughter with your love story, you don't want to miss this great read.

Like a light dessert that's still satisfying. Garman's sense of humor is the creme a la creme. She's a natural and a most accomplished comedienne. My only criticism is the male love interest (actually husband) is too wonderful, too understanding, too good-looking, too kind, sensitive and perfect in every way. If he's human, he's got flaws. I'm reading the sequel, so maybe I'll find he is human after all. But I still loved the book and recommend it.

This is a new author for me, and let's just say she totally delivered on the laughs. I usually go for books with the "steam" factor, but because of the awesome writing of the characters Sibby and Aiden, it wasn't needed. Not the book to share with really religious friends but an interesting take on the events.

Gives a different perspective.

It's just a story about the last days of Jesus that most people are familiar with. There is a little bit about what Judas thoughts and problems might have been but other than that there is not much of the story that is not already well known.

If you are going to try and write a fictional gospel, then familiarize yourself with the style and tone of the time period. This felt like a high school project. Ugh.

In spite of the clever packaging---this small 100+ page novel appears to be an ancient leather-bound journal complete with built in ribbon bookmark--- Jeffrey Archer's "The Gospel According to Judas by Benjamin Iscariot" fails to deliver the punch needed to smack it into the significance realm of the Dead Sea Scrolls.I expected some grand revelation---perhaps Judas and Jesus had concocted the whole betrayal bit; Judas gladly takes the hit and for two millennia is thought to be the ultimate 30 pieces of silver traitor. As I read this little gospel formatted tome, I am thinking, Judas's legendary despicable actions were all part of his Master's ultimate plan, right?Wrong.Supposedly, in "The Gospel According to Judas by Benjamin Iscariot" Archer and Moloney collaborate to formulate a tale believable to both Biblical scholars and modern laymen readers. The format definitely bespeaks of their desire to create something that resembles a gospel rendering complete with chapter and verse and the Jesus quotations (most of which are familiar from evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) highlighted in a red italicized font. Nevertheless, the story itself disappoints as it is far too similar to the actual gospels from which it is based to excite any degree of controversy. The supposed mystery of the real Judas simply neglects to properly mystify.Bottom line? Years ago, I had read Frank Yerby's novel, "Judas, My Brother." Believe me as scandalous as the plotline of this older book seemed to me then, it could far more captivate its audience now than this Archer-Moloney collaboration. Sadly, "The Gospel According to Judas by Benjamin Iscariot" attempts to retell the story of Christ's ministry utilizing a fifth evangelist format that simply doesn't work. Why read this when the original four authors of the New Testament gospels have already told the tale and have told it the best way possible? Not recommended.Diana Faillace Von Behren"reneofc"

I was SOO disappointed with this book I read all Jeffrey Archers stuff and never thought something would come from him that was so poorly written. Always his stuff is so believeable and rings true, this was like a total lie from the beginning. To bad to have this book among his writtings.

It was a gift for my great niece. I assume she enjoyed it. I sent the Angelina doll along with the book.

I love this book. It is one of my favorites from my childhood.

The Angelina Ballerina series of books are charming and feature a precocious young mouse who is also an aspiring ballerina. Angelina Mouseling is predictably excited when she gets picked by her ballet instructor, Ms. Lilly to play the role of a magic fairy in a grown-up ballet called The Gypsy Queen. As a bonus, cousin Henry is picked to play the role of an elf.Angelina's excitement wanes when she discovers cousin Henry has become a favorite of the prima ballerina Madame Zizi. Filled with envy, Angelina can't bring herself to be happy for Henry, until an incident on opening night brings the cousins together again.The illustrations by Helen Craig are a delight and are quite detailed. The colors and hues make the pictures as much of a delight as the charming story, and young children will easily relate to the antics of Angelina and Henry. At seven, my daughter has not outgrown these stories, even after having read them multiple times since she was a preschooler!

beautifully illustrated, heartwarming childrens stories. Even though the Angelina stories are geared towards girls, my little boy, at 8, enjoyed these as well, especially when mom read to him. These are good stories to read to your child at bedtime.The artwork is detailed and delightful to look at-you'll see new things each time you look, and children love that that every scene is filled with many little mice.This Angelina story deals with a sometimes hard topic to talk about-jealousy. Each book is filled with wonderful life lessons told in a gentle, non preachy way.I highly recommend this series for any child.5 stars!

We're slowly working our way through the Angelina Ballerina books, based on the fanatic love of several of my daughter's friends for Angelina. Angelina loves to dance, and gets the opportunity to be in a real ballet as a magic fairy. One slight problem is that Angelina's cousin Harry, who looks very silly dancing, is also in the ballet as an elf. When Harry gets a line, Angelina must deal with her feelings of jealousy.This is a relatively short book, with some great artwork, that parents won't mind reading multiple times. Like some of the other Angelina books, a part of the story is about Angelina dealing with her feelings, and happily, it all works out in the end.

Some of the other reviews mentioned toddler girls liking this book, well I guess some middle-aged "girls" like this book too! I'm almost 50 and don't have kids, but even I enjoyed this book.I thought there were 2 good lessons presented:1. Having a boy (Henry) want to dance and be in the ballet.2. Showing Angelina being jealous, but putting that aside to help Henry when he needed it.Learning not to stereotype and to forgive are lessons we all need to be reminded of from time to time.
