This is a timely book for me because my parents are very elderly (94 and 88) and determined to stay in their home until the last possible second. After reading this thought provoking book that teaches so much I am thinking that it may be possible for them to stay until the end which could be next week or a few years from now. It's going to take some organizing, but it looks like it is worth some research and time. It makes me sad to see how much of their independence they have lost, but they still enjoy their lives as limited as they are.There is a tendency to treat old people like children which I realize now is usually very wrong. My dad is a diabetic and we (my siblings and I) have told him over and over that his diet of sugary cereal or cinnamon rolls and orange juice for breakfast and light store brand fruit yogurt with grapes and three cookies for lunch is not what he should be eating. He acts surprised every time we mention this, but doesn't change a thing because I now understand that he wants the independence of eating as he pleases. He has lost so much--can barely hear or see or walk, that he needs these very small pleasures to continue. I imagine he doesn't see the point in giving up anything else because he has so little left. My mother's memory is going and she has COPD, but somehow has lots of get up and go. She does a lot for my dad even though I suspect she is the sicker one. Being Mortal is making me think about the best way to help my parents which will probably start with asking them what they want.One thing that surprised me completely was Dr. Gawande's statement that genetics is only a small part of reaching old age. Here I've been thinking that because my parents have lived so long that reaching old age is probably a no brainer for me. I have to think about that possiblity some more--a lot more.This book has some touching stories about very sick people and how their lives ended. Unfortunately for many sick people the medical community is driven to act, but not necessarily to do what is best for the individual. It seems to me that they've forgotten "the do no harm" part of being a doctor. It seems to me it does harm people to ruin the time sick people have left.A very through provoking book that will ultimately make me think about what I want when the end is near. I wish everyone would read it; especially medical people.

This book could be a game changer, if enough people read it and take it to heart. Atul Gawande addresses end-of-life care, and how we're getting it wrong, both within the medical establishment and in our families.Dr. Gawande's book focuses both on medical procedures and living conditions in later life. He addresses the reality that as people near the end of life, decisions about their living situation are primarily aimed at ensuring safety at the expense of retaining autonomy, especially when adult children are making the decisions. "We want autonomy for ourselves and safety for those we love," a friend tells the author. We mistakenly treat elders as children, Dr. Gawande says, when we deny them the right to make choices, even bad choices. People of any age want the right to lock their doors, set the temperature they want, dress how they like, eat what they want, admit visitors only when they're in the mood. Yet, nursing homes (and even assisted living communities) are geared toward making these decisions for people in order to keep them safe, gain government funds, and ensure a routine for the facility.In addition, Dr. Gawande shows how end-of-life physical conditions are most often treated as medical crises needing to be "fixed," instead of managed for quality of life when treatment has become futile. Life is more than just a stretch of years; it must have meaning and purpose to be worth living, he says. This is a familiar concept (in fact, I read parts of this book in The New Yorker), but he builds a strong case for reform through case studies, stories from his own life, and examples of how individuals are either becoming victims of, or bucking, the system. He addresses assisted suicide only briefly, but he mentions it in relation to end-of-life care. "Assisted living is far harder than assisted death, but its possibilities are far greater as well," he writes.The good news is that some people are doing what they can to improve the well-being of elders nearing the end of their lives. He demonstrates the beauty of hospice care in the home. He tells a great story of a doctor who convinced a nursing home to bring in two dogs, four cats and one hundred birds! It was a risky proposal, but the rewards were phenomenal. It made the place, and the people, come alive. I am aware, though, that these movements rely on individuals, and only if enough people have a vision for change will it come about. For that reason, I hope this book makes a big splash!

This is a nice book. However, the ingredient list is extensive. I'd like much better to see ingredients that most people have on hand, or can easily get. Sapindus mukorossi berries,mango seed butter, fossilized amber essential oil? Really? No offense to Sandra.

The book I received is missing a section. It appears to be a new book, and the parts that are there are informative, but pages 115 through 127 are missing! They are not torn out, they are just missing. It's like the book was bound and put together without that section. I contacted the seller, who continues to advertise the book as "new" and in "perfect condition" and asked them to check their stock to see if they had a book that included all the pages, but they refused and blew me off, so now I'm not sure what to do. I think I will try to purchase another copy from a different book seller and hope for better results. Other than the missing pages, the book is just what I was looking for. The recipes are easy to follow and the resulting salve seems to have the pain relieving qualities I was looking for. I look forward to trying more of the recipes.

My order was fulfilled in a satisfactory manner and the info in the book is good if you have knowledge of making beauty products at home already. I would recommend ordering Rosemary Gladstar's Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health as a companion book as well as The Official High Times Cannabis Cookbook.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!! It has helped me develop and learn about the topical applications I am interested in creating and more about herbs that pair well with cannabis. This book is like the Joy of Cooking in that one recipe builds on another and you can cross reference different recipes to make something that suits exactly what you want. I have much more to learn and am looking forward to it.

Very good book, well organized and very practical. Gives a good overview of some very useful pain-relief and soothing methods of using cannabis in ways other than smoking. Only a few edible recipes, so if that is your thing, I would suggest a different book. Gave as a gift, as I do not use cannabis myself, but my friend was very happy with the pictures and content.

I purchased the book hoping it would lend some investment insight. Almost all the industries mentioned here are truly nascent and there are very few publicly available investment instruments involved at this point for the industries mentioned, aside from the ponzi scheme bitcoin. So unless you're a venture capitalist or private equity firm with big dollars and connections, you won't get much out of this book from an investment perspective.I think it would be a good book for a high school student to read, maybe in their junior year, so they can see what the future job market looks like and can plan to prepare themselves for that.

We're entering an era where many potent technologies will drastically change a lot of things about us, from our lifestyles to how we interact with others. Alec Ross covers all the interesting avenues from artificial intelligence to advances made in bio-technology, I wish he went on and devoted a chapter to Virtual Reality, but everything else he nails to the point. Ross covers the potentials and the perils of what the future holds and takes us on an exciting journey of whats to come. Once you start reading you wouldn't want to put this book down!

I find the book so far very interesting.

The book has many interesting chapters, but the one I most vividly remember is about cyber warfare and security.The author predicted that the cyber security market will boost some 10 times what it was worth when the book was written in as little as 3 years.With the latest cyber attacks against Microsoft and government institutions around the world, you clealy see this prediction unfolding.

This book really spoke to me, not only because Mr. Ross wrote about my country several time in the book but also because it opened my eyes to things I didn't think that much about before. After finishing "The Industries of the Future" I now have a better idea of where I'll be focusing my efforts in the future as I still have several before finishing college and I intent on studying more on what I learned in this book in the meantime. Overall this is a very informative book with recommendation at the end that I will definitely apply to my life.

This is a must-have read for any pilot preparing for his or her instrument check ride. Not only does it cover information that would be in the Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, it also covers info from the FARs and more importantly, the kinds of practical questions an examiner would ask in an oral exam that wouldn't necessarily be in the written exam. It gets you thinking about what other things to be prepared to be tested on. Paperback copy is easy to carry and reference and the type is large enough to read without aid. Decent price.

When I opened the shipping package the cover was only partially attached to the spine. Then as I began reading, the pages would separate from the binding about 2/3 the length of the spine. Within a day, pages were falling out of the book. I wrote the seller and explained the issue, telling them I needed to study but also that I was going to be loosing pages. They offered to let me return the book for an exchange or request a discount on the book. My feeling was that I didn't want to be without the book long enough to complete all the shipping but that 20% was not enough of a discount for such a poor quality book. In the end, I have requested the discount and had a local printer install a comb binding.

Aced my 3.5 hours, yes 3.5 hrs, oral in part thanks to this book. I don’t think any of these were verbatim or quite as hard as what is in here, but it makes you well prepaired.

This has been a big help for me getting ready for my instrument check ride. I'm enrolled in a part 141 training program, so I have stage checks (like check rides, there is a flight, oral, and written exam). So far this has helped me out quite a bit on my stage checks and I've passed the first two with no stress.To be clear, this isn't a book that you should use as your only source to prepare for an exam. This is really helpful as a type of guide that you can read through to identify gaps in your knowledge. Each question has an answer paragraph or two that gives an example of a good response. If you read a question and you're sure that you know the answer, move on the the next one. If you read a question and you don't feel like you know the answer, take a look at the answer portion. If the answer is unfamiliar to you then you've got a good indication of what you need to brush up on. Using the book this way has helped me out to understand my deficient areas and know where I need spend more time studying.

I passed my Instrument checkride yesterday and the oral was a breeze thanks to this guide. I recommend everyone go through each question one by one and create flash cards for the ones that give you the most problems. Hand writing and adding personal notes or drawings will really help you make sure the content sticks with you. Simply reading the book would not work as well in my opinion.

The book is detailed enough to be very helpful, but short enough I was able to get through it in a few days. The content was excellent, providing references that I used during my exam, and gave me a great overview of things to think about and be prepared for. My oral exam was a piece of cake!

Peter Enns spent many years in a religious tradition that valued certainty, right beliefs, and a sense of defending the faith against those who believe differently. Through a series of personal revelations, he came to let go of that attitude of certainty and toward an attitude of trust. As the subtitle implies, his book The Sin of Certainty: Why God Desires Our Trust More Than Our "Correct" Beliefs, Enns tells his story and encourages other Christians to trust in God, not in their carefully constructed theological systems.I'm all for intellectual humility, so I felt an immediate connection with his position. He also writes about being driven from the seminary where he was educated and taught for many years. A new wave of "theological certainty" took hold at the seminary and didn't deem him certain enough, so he was shown the door. I felt a further connection with him, as the seminary I attended went through a similar purge while I was there. After a large number of professors were shown the door or fled on their own volition, I left the Ph.D. program. So I can relate to his being on the wrong side of theological certainty.Enns's large theme here is that God wants us to trust him, not our own dogmatism. Our faith should be in God, not in denomination, biblical interpretation, or confessional statement. He sums it up like this: "trust means letting go of the need to know, of the need to be certain." He came to embrace the contemplative traditions in the church, concluding that "trust in God, not correct thinking about God, is the beginning and end of faith, the only true and abiding path."So far, I'm on board with him. We see through a glass darkly. We can't know it all. But my problem with Enns is his calling out Christians who do have certainty in their traditions. Can such a tradition "sell God short by keeping the Creator captive to what we are able to comprehend"? Can a set of beliefs become an idol? Do some people trust their beliefs more than they trust God? All of these may be true for some people, in some traditions.Enns says he's "not against creeds," but his book, for the most part, says otherwise. What I would like to have heard from him is whether there is anything for which he would claim certainty. That Jesus is an historical figure? That he lived and taught as the Bible says? That he died and was resurrected on the third day? I suspect Enns would say he's certain about these things. Is that sinful certainty? I am not certain.He also touches on subjects like the problem of evil, the absurdity of believing in a literal creation as told in Genesis, and difficulties with the character of God in the Old Testament. Unfortunately, he doesn't have very good answers for these questions. He likes the fact that these questions lead to doubt, which "strips away distraction so we can more clearly see the inadequacies of whom we think God is and move us from the foolishness of thinking that our god is the God." So whose god is the God?As much as I felt an affinity for Enns and his perspective, ultimately I came down not liking what he had to say. He has a very friendly, conversational, even jovial tone, but he's a smiling bomb thrower. He creates straw men and brings them crashing down. He has a high degree of tolerance for any theological perspective--except for those who have a low degree of tolerance. He writes, "I value challenging older orthodoxies and gaining new insights. That's neither good nor bad in and of itself." Yet if you are one who values older orthodoxies, and value insights of those who lived many generations before, that's certainly bad. This book is less like a teacher and more like a friend who has already gone a ways down the road you're traveling and is telling you what it was like for them.People looking for a theological discussion of the issue at hand will probably be disappointed, although Enns does bring up several biblical passages portraying doubt that we do not often mention. This book is not about establishing a "Christian view" of doubt or suggestions on how to deal with it.Instead, the book speaks to us from the cauldron of life circumstances, how maintaining a hidebound certainty fared in that cauldron, and where passing through that experience took and is taking him. I can imagine some people not being able to relate. I can imagine many more finding a lot of resonance and empathy. But either way, this is a book you -relate to-, not so much a repository of information to take away.For me, the book was like a salve. It was a reminder from a mature (that's not meant to be a euphemism for "old," Pete) Christian that darkness and doubt are transformative experiences that tie me to Jesus with cords so much stronger than doctrinal certitude. They are times to be treasured and used, not events to try and prevent or hide from. And what's more, he (correctly) points out that this act of trust in the face of my vacillating belief and ever-so-limited knowledge is really the heart of what it means to have an authentic relationship with God.One reviewer here mentioned that he thinks Enns is too hard on orthodoxy, but I didn't see that at all. The book says virtually nothing about creeds or systematic theology or anything like that. The few times these things are alluded to, it is to remind us that we can't use them as excuses, shields, or a substitute for exploration and growth. Enns even talks about his Episcopal congregation (no strangers to creeds and confessions) and the comfort he finds in the Book of Common Prayer. There is nothing in the book that speaks disparagingly of creeds, orthodoxy, or church history. In fact, I felt Enns went out of his way to try and make sure people didn't think this was a rant against those things.What he does do, however, is highlight the misplaced role we have given those things in our faith - almost making faith synonymous with those things. I expect that could make someone uncomfortable depending on where they're at with that idea, but that's not really the author's fault. If you're on the fence about buying this book because you're afraid it'll be a screed against orthodox doctrine, allow me to lay that fear to rest. In fact, if you have fears about those sorts of things, I'd highly recommend this book to you.
