Both of my daughters are upwardly mobile professionals, but often lack self confidence. This book is now their favorite read.

I was really excited about this book. I've read my share of witty, in your face, self help books before but this one does it all WRONG. The author's perspective is incredibly privileged and there's a point about mid way through where she says "if you're depressed, just act like someone who isn't depressed". While I do think the idea of manifesting what you want through positive thinking is great, this book isn't the first to suggest it. Overall the author seems out of touch, the books is potentially triggering, and I would not recommend it.

I have to commend Jen Sincero for putting her on spin on the whole LOA thing and making some money off it, or at least making some money off me. Because no one forced me to buy this book. Everything in this book, I PROMISE YOU, can be found for free on the internet, just without the sassy, pseudo punk-rocky demeanor that is really the selling point of this thing. Following one of the main points of this book, I take full responsibility for wasting time and money on reading this pile of hoo-hah.

Hard to read. Writer has a condescending tone throughout. Tried to read book from different chapters and just could not read it. Have read dozens of self-help books during my life, but this one is not recommended.

Complete waste of money. I was excited to read it after I heard a good review. Unfortunately, the author's tone was unbearable. Her comments about depression along with her abrasive attitude turned me off.

Jen Sincero is a talented writer, and her edgy, irreverent style will be inspiring and motivational to many readers. If you've read other self help books then you probably won't find much that's new here. In fact, it's really the in-your-face tone and humor in her writing that makes this book worthwhile. As for her ideas, I personally found a lot to take issue with. First, she has a very polarized view of spiritual growth that divides our lives in to those that suck and those that are awesome. Maybe that works for young millennials just starting out in life, and if that's the audience she’s g oing for, then great, but most of us are somewhere on a continuum and her assertions that life is either this way or that way are simplistic to say the least. Sincero also uses a lot of highly critical, edgy language to describe people who are struggling or stuck - therefore not as awesome as she is - using words like "lame-o " "suck" "wuss" ...well, you get the idea. This may be mildly amusing the first time around, but it gets old fast and it's not exactly kind to those who may really be struggling. I have to confess that I question a writer who continually references her own life choices and personal career success as a model that the rest of us should follow. There is an exhibitionistic, narcissistic, "look at me", "look at how successful I am" dimension running through this book that is self-indulgent while lacking insight about what success could mean or look like for another person. Read this book for a quick shot of motivation if that's what you need, it's good for that, but look elsewhere for help in developing your own ideas and values about success and purpose. This is the Jen Sincero version and it may not apply to you.

Anyone who has read other self-help books from authors likes, Louise Hay, Wayne Walter Deep Chopra, Echart Tolle, etc. and read the book Secret, you would feel many parts of the book content are almost literally copied from other self-help books.

Okay, listen up. I ADORED this book. I subscribed to everything she said. I was literally prepared to go out and buy three more volumes for my friends.Until Chapter 17.About halfway through the book, Sincero begins talking about excuses. Okay, yes. A valuable thing to discuss. People, myself included, make excuses all the time. But she decides to target a set group of people.People who are clinically depressed. She says, and I'm paraphrasing here, that depression is a comfort because it gives those who suffer from it an excuse not to do anything but stay in bed....And that is precisely when I tuned out. I went from loving everything she said to eye rolling in a matter of seconds. My clinical depression is not an excuse. It isn't me being lazy. It isn't me snickering as I back out on plans I make with friends. It's me literally being unable to do anything because my disease is keeping me from doing it. There are days where I can't do anything at all. There are days where laundry piles up and my bedroom becomes a disaster and I hide away from the world because I don't think I'm worthy of being seen. There are days where I stop seeing my friends because I feel like I'm a burden to them. And my friends understand this. They know what I go through and they know that if I need some time to myself to get my brain under control, then it isn't an excuse. It doesn't mean I don't love them. It means that I'm just dealing with negative thoughts and I need to work through it. The fact that Sincero completely misunderstands depression ruined this book for me instantly. Yes, I will admit she gives valuable advice. But once I figured out that her advice disvalues someone like me, I checked out. Also, her advice...is highly privileged. She says things like, "If you can afford this book, then you're doing okay." "Just buy the car of your dreams!" "If you want to travel the world, stop making excuses and you can." Some people...can't do that. Don't get me wrong, I'm in a good place right now but a year ago? I could barely pay my student loans. I couldn't afford to replace the khakis that were part of my work uniform. I ate leftovers for days on end because my paycheck wasn't going far enough. I didn't blame the universe for this. And I certainly didn't spend beyond my means just because I thought 'the universe owes me and will figure it out.' Sometimes, you're just in a s***ty place in life. I was in a s***ty place for three and a half years. Going out and spending money on a trip around the world isn't exactly sound advice for everyone. I felt like Sincero was speaking to one small group of clients. I didn't fit within that group.Like I said, she does say some really nice things. She did build me up for quite a few chapters. But she dropped me instantly and it hurt. Depression is hard enough. People with depression shouldn't hear that it's an 'excuse.' I was highly offended and if I wasn't so far in the book, I would've stopped reading altogether.Needless to say, I'm pretty glad to be done with this one.

I used this book along with an online tutorial from ETS. I really think I gained more from the book than the online program I bought and the book was so much cheaper! It is a great review of everything. It is put together well in a good format that is easy to read and follow. The practice test questions are good. I took the practice test, read the book and studied it, then took the practice test again. I scored exceptionally well on the PLT the first time I took it. The only thing I would have liked would have been a few addition questions in this book. Great review!!

This product is very short and consise. If you are looking for a quick review in a few days this one can do it. If you are looking for a thorough review this will not do it. I would recommend getting this book along with purchasing the PLT book published by the PRAXIS company. Also, the PLT flashcards are very good.

Perfectly concise. Well written, easy to read, all you need, get it done book. If you're only going to buy one, buy this one.

I bought this to study for my last Praxis test I had to take. The Praxis II PLT, which was known among my fellow education students to be the hardest test. I must first say this: I got out of the teaching program before my final semester because I knew I would not want to stay in the education system for my entire life and didn't like the direction it was heading. I made the official decision a few days before taking this test. Needless to say, I took the test, knowing in the back of my mind, it didn't matter if I passed or not. As for the results ( I looked just because I was curious), I passed that test with a higher grade than I had made on any of the 4 I had taken!! Honestly, I was shocked, considering I was pretty calm and not stressed while I took it, knowing it wouldn't matter for my future anymore! So, this book clearly works wonders because it was what I had used to study!! :) Since I wasn't worried about passing or not, when I took the test, I simply just picked the first answer that seemed right to me, which was clearly the best strategy I had ever used. Just pick the first answer that you think is right, because otherwise you are likely to over think and stress out, and pick a wrong answer. I hope this helps. Good luck if you are going to be a teacher!!

I used this book when taking my praxis 2 and PLT exams. It is laid out in bullet and paragraph form which makes studying very easy. This is a must for either exam. I passed the first time using this book on both exams.

I have had taken praxis and you need a study guide since the test is expensive, and re-takes are also expensive!

It's somewhat outdated in the way it says the test is formatted but it does have a lot of really good information.

This was the least expensive book I found and figured why not give it a try.... it was just a few dollars.... WAY MORE HELPFUL than the McGraw-Hill's PRAXIS 1 and 2 book and KAPLAN's PRAXIS book...I paid almost $20 for each of those books that are 300-500 pages of information...for the praxis 1!!! this book has helped me know what information to focus on and teaches me the things I need to know! LOVE IT

Jim Carnes explores the other side of American history. In his book, US AND THEM: A HISTORY OF INTOLERANCE IN AMERICA, Carnes introduces readers to issues in US history that are briefly expressed in textbooks. However, this book has a textbook format, but it is informative and insightful when examining the history of the United States in terms of religious, racial, and social intolerance. Although the book may be geared towards social studies and history classes, grades 5-12, or libraries, it is an effective learning tool towards setting the stage to discuss intolerance that has occurred within American history.US AND THEM covers the most pivotal events in American history that have had a drastic affect on its people and communities. Carnes shows a birds-eye view of societal indifferences and injustices that occurred in the seventeenth, nineteenth, and twentieth century. Each of the chapters in the book are succinct and detailed, however, they leave the reader with a better perspective of events, such as the Salem Witch Trials, the debacle between Protestants and Catholics in Philadelphia in 1844, the Ghost Dance at Wounded Knee, and several other events that happened in the 1980s and 1990s pertaining to ethnic and gender issues. The narrative and first person accounts situated within the side margins of the pages are helpful in providing the historical background of each particular event. Two essential sections, "At issue" and "The context" synthesize the facts between the myths, and the graphic illustrations within the text may invoke strong emotions and open the doors for discussion and critical analysis; undoubtedly, questions will arise on why issues such as gender, race and religion were problematic issues in history and continue to be today.Indeed, Carnes and the preface by the late Chief Justice Harry A. Blackmun acknowledge the importance of the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution and the relevance these documents have toward excluding intolerance and ignorance within society during critical periods, times of war or economic hardships. This book reiterates the importance and the understanding of laws and rights, and should be recommended reading for all ages, especially when judgments of the past are being reinterpreted and transformed.

I use this book in class. It's an eyeopener for my students.

There does not seem to be much available for the general reader about the treatment of immigrants to this country. We seem to repeat the same patterns with each new group. A good source of information.

Good lecture, i read it with my daughter for a homework assigment, it arrived on time and was it and prectical to found it through amazon as always

The Appendix E of this book really tells you all you need to know:A team of researchers have been reviewing and tabulating the health outcomes 2,230 children over age two and under age seven who were patients at my clinic, Integrative Pediatrics, from June 2008 (which is when my clinic first opened) to February 2015. We are in the process of compiling this data for a retrospective study approved by Western Institutional Review Board. We are examining incidence of autism, developmental delays, hospitalization a, infectious diseases, and sick visits. The following data is preliminary but serves to answer one key question: Does Dr Paul's Vaccine-Friendly Plan help reduce the incidence of autism?Patients were divided into three groups as follows:Group 1: Following Dr Paul's Vaccine-Friendly Plan:These children were either born into my practice of established care by the two month well baby visit. They did not get the birth or the infant hepatitis B vaccine. If they got the hepatitis A vaccine, it was after age two. If they got the MMR and the chicken pox vaccines, it was at or after age three. There were 1,098 children in Group 1.Group 2: Unvaccinated: Because of parental choice, these children had no vaccines. There were 238 children in Group 2.Group 3: Other/Most Vaccinated: Though there was some individual variability, many children in Group 3 were vaccinated according to CDC guidelines. There were 894 children in Group 3.Group Total Autism/ASD Rate1 1,098 0 02 238 0 03 894 15 1/60Using the previous CDC autism rate of one in fifty, we would have expected approximately twenty-two cases of autism in Group 1, but there were no autism or ASD (autism spectrum disorder) diagnoses. We would have expected to have approximately four cases of autism in Group 2, but there were no autism or ASD diagnoses. We would have expected to have approximately seventeen cases of autism in Group 3, and there are fifteen autism/ASD diagnoses, which mirrors the national average. This data demonstrates with a high level of statistical significance that the Vaccine-Friendly Plan - as well as not vaccinating at all - was associated with less autism/ASD.

As a Functional Medicine practicing pediatrician, words are inadequate to describe how good this book is! After a total of 31 years in conventional pediatric practice, and another 11 years serving on the teaching faculty of a major university pediatric teaching program, I discovered the world of integrative medicine. After an intensive two-year period of reading, learning, and trying the functional Medicine approach on select patients with chronic health problems, I was stunned to discover the amazing world of healing through mostly natural means. Beginning in November of 2013 I retired from conventional pediatrics to begin a new career in Functional Medicine, becoming board certified in Integrative Pediatrics (B.C.I.P.) under the auspices of the American Association of Integrative Medicine (AAIM) in May, 2016.The process of education included reading over 100 books, attending functional medicine educational events and ultimately speaking at an integrative medicine conference, and networking and brainstorming with some of the leading Functional Medicine practitioners and authors in the field – such as Dr. William Davis, Dr. David Perlmutter, and others. Having already co-authored a book with psychologist John Rosemond (The Diseasing of America’s Children Thomas Nelson 2008), I have learned how difficult it is to write a book while practicing. The Vaccine-Friendly Plan is the book I would have written if I ever found myself able and willing to take on the gargantuan task of producing such as work as this one. I am in absolute awe of Dr. Thomas and Dr. Margulis for this masterpiece. There are only a couple of places in the entire book where I would disagree about anything, and it is without a doubt the finest single book I have ever read that I would give to or recommend to every parent of a child I have the privilege to work with. I intend to do just that for parents who ask me about recommendations for what to do about vaccines – a question I get from a lot of them since changing my career over completely to a functional medicine approach to chronic health problems. On a personal note, I identify strongly with Dr. Thomas’ description of how attending an autism conference changed his life. Attending the AutismOne conference in Chicago in 2015 changed mine – undoubtedly in the same manner as Dr. Thomas describes. Observing and hearing stories of heroic parents and their children with various forms of ASD, talking to them, hearing some of them give talks, brought me from hesitation to take on the complexities of dealing with autism to knowing that I must and would do whatever it took to prepare myself to be able to do so. This book is a treasure in that process. I cannot thank you enough, Drs Thomas and Margolis.Bose Ravenel, M.D., F.A.A.P., B.C,I.PRobinhood Integrative HealthWinston Salem, North Carolina

I use this in my practice regularly. I know vaccines are essentially a religion in the US but lets be real. While many kids are fine with vaccines, a lot of them have bad reactions, some so bad they are ill for years (seizures, autoimmune diseases, etc). I never want to see meningitis back on the rise, and I counsel my parents about the pneumococcal vaccine. It's still a common infection, even if HIB is not. But as for measles, mumps, pertussis - If we are so worried about having a vaccinated population, why don't we focus on vaccinating adults? You know almost every single vaccine a kid or infant gets has worn off by the time they're a teenager. So most adults are not immune to these illnesses any more. I know vaccines do a lot of good for the world globally and have helped millions of people. But that doesn't mean that we should use them without any sense of judiciousness or that they should be forced on families or on children that have indicators of past or potential vaccine reactions.

Review

"I've read the book, and wow what an enlightening process to follow with your partner. I recommend you go through it, and enjoy the end result!".-- Corey Hinde, New Zealand. Questions For "Couples" is more like Questions For ALL. The questions in this travel size book are meant for couples but are very much thought provoking for all. I found myself reading a set of questions a day and not moving on until I thought of every possible answer that was true to my self. It's a great read for a confused or immobile phase. Marcus &' Ashley, I commend you for this one.-- Stephanie (Reader, Goodreads.com ) Excellent discussion starter with meaningful questions. We read a couple questions before sleep 1-2 times a week. Highly recommend!-- KAB (Reader, Amazon.ca)My wife keeps this book on her phone, and we use it to turn down time into interesting conversions.-- Kenny Bellew (Reader, Goodreads.com)This book is exactly what it says it is 469 questions to have the conversation going. A lot of the time couples loose connection and don't know where to start. This is a good place.-- Lena Feygin (Reader, Goodreads.com)

Really, who couldn't sit down and write a bunch of questions like these types books? The hard part is convincing someone to publish your innane list of questions. This one covers things like money, sex, etc. that couples avoid or fight about. Has sections for daily, weekly, monthly and yearly questions. Better than other question books I've seen/read. I would recommend this one if you are a couple (obviously, for couples) and want more serious questions than just silly ones. Plus you can ask the questions you want answers to and use the excuse that "it's in the book". Quality of the physical book is ok. It is roughly pocket size, so it can be packed for travel easily.

We randomly pick a number every night. What I really enjoy the most out of this, is that my husband enjoys it and will remind me nightly that we have our question to do and our weekly questions if forgot! My only negative comment is that we don't get a lot of discussion out of most of the questions we have answered so far, granted we still have several hundred to go...

Good Questions to open discussions for couples who are newly married or who have been married for years. Some questions will make you a little uncomfortable at first blush however, they will open the door to some great conversations.

Finally a book that has actual thought provoking questions. And the questions don’t repeat themselves. Great for all couples new and old.

Love the straightforward nature of this book. It’s simply tons of great questions on all kinds of subjects. Plus at he back there are bonus sections for weekly check ins and annual questions. I’m really enjoying working through this one day at a time.

This is an awesome book that has helped me and my partner enjoy one another's company even more. The questions are well-vetted and meaningful.

The questions in the book are fantastic. Every couple should ask them to know each other better. It can also be fun, romantic, and sometimes difficult.

Hubby and I love these type of books! Some questions we already know or just seem irrelevant to answer but great to bond over

New Found Land: Lewis and Clark's Voyage of Discovery, by Allan Wolf

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up–This amazing work presents the exciting adventure of the Lewis and Clark expedition through the eyes of its participants. Using poetic form, Wolf tells the story in alternating narratives by a dozen of the human participants and Seaman, the Newfoundland dog belonging to Meriwether Lewis. The dog, called Oolum here, supposedly his private name, serves as the omniscient narrator. His prose entries provide a running description of and commentary on the events. Factual details abound, reflecting the intense research on which the book is based. But Wolf has managed to give intriguing, well-developed personalities to the Corps of Discovery members who tell this tale. The disparate group included educated men, adventurers, traders, a captured teenage Shoshone girl, and a slave belonging to William Clark. Talk of freedom from different points of view is enlightening as is Clark's rationalization for slavery. The dramatic effects of the expedition on the participants come to life as they share their experiences and thoughts with readers. The mind-boggling reality of what these people went through to explore and expand this nation instills appreciation for their sacrifices and accomplishments. In notes following the novel, Wolf describes the limited literary liberties he took with some of the details. For example, Thomas Jefferson's closing narrative includes reminiscences of a fictitious boyhood relationship with Lewis. This is an extraordinary, engrossing book that would appeal most to serious readers, but it should definitely be added to any collection.–Renee Steinberg, formerly at Fieldstone Middle School, Montvale, NJ Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

This book, which is based on extensive historical research, uses nontraditional narrative formats to successfully re-create the period and convey the excitement and anxiety of venturing into the unknown. It also puts distinct human faces on famous and not-so-famous names. Wolf's primary narrator is Lewis' dog, Seaman. Thirteen other voices, ranging from President Jefferson and Captains Lewis and Clark to drinker Hugh Hall, and York, Clark's slave, relate the events from their perspectives. These diverse voices reveal in free verse the class structure of the expedition, as well as historical attitudes toward African Americans, Indians, and women. A novel that willl enrich American History studies and stimulate classroom discussion. Linda PerkinsCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

I very much enjoyed this book. It might be a good book for older students, but there are several spots where it talks about very adult natured issues. For example it goes into some detail about Sacajawea going into her monthly cycle and what happened at one point. I am a 4th grade teacher and would not use this as a read aloud with my class. Not sure how other teachers of elementary school got by this, but it is a problem I prefer not to create in my classroom.

Written in a very unique format that is a little hard to get used to at first, but once I got used to it I enjoyed the book very much. I like that it tells about events from different viewpoints. I liked how the end deals with some of the harsh realities of what life was like after they returned. There is also a section at the end that basically tells about each character and what we really know about them vs. any literary license that was taken by the author. That is typical of historical fiction, but I liked the format this author put it in--its written more like a list so it is easier to follow, especially with so many characters. Some of the chapters are written from the viewpoint of their dog--those seemed a little strange to me, but still it worked ok.It must be hard to get copies of the book. I am a school teacher so I ordered copies to use with a class last year and they came two or three at a time over several weeks. By the time I got all of them I had probably waited 3-4 weeks. This year I am ordering about twenty more. I ordered them about a week ago and they still haven't shipped yet and it actually says on the page that sometimes they take 1-2 months to ship! I'm used to quick Amazon shipping and didn't really notice that when I placed the order. It isn't a big deal to me because I don't plan to use them soon, but be prepared for a wait. If its just one copy I don't know if the wait is as long, but if you want this in a week it probably will not happen.Update..Ordered on Oct. 1st. Received email from Amazon on Oct. 25th saying they are still not available to ship and that the new estimated delivery date is between Dec. 4th and Jan. 6th. That is three months after I ordered them! I went to Barnes and Noble and ordered them and about half will ship in two days, the other half in about two weeks. Normally I prefer Amazon to Barnes and Noble, but not in this case.

Interestingly written as almost diary entries by various members of the expedition party including Lewis's dog and Clark's slave. A bit raw, but those were the times. Two more opposite men than Lewis and Clark coming together to explore new lands acquired by Jefferson's government and forcing the native inhabitants to be thrilled with our occupation of 'our' land sets the stage for the exploitation of Native Americans which still exists. Much of the excursion isn't pretty or exciting according to this book, but I would assume it is more accurate than the romanticized version of us assimilating into the land of extreme beauty and potential.

I purchased this book for my grandson for Christmas last year. He was struggling in reading, except when it came to hiistory where he just couldn't get enough. Lewis and Clark enthrall him and he found this novel fascinating.

Easy read -- great way to learn about Lewis and Clark's expedition without getting bogged down in detail. Creative synopsis of their journey.

Nice variation on the theme.

Excellent!

I expected this to be a paperback, but recieved a hardcover copy and was pleasantly suprised. This was a fantastic value.

WHAT TO EXPECTWHEN YOU'RE ADOLESCENTNOT YOUR MOTHER'SGYNECOLOGISTYou're a New Kind of Girl—You Deserve a New Kind of MedicineCasey,1 fifteen, a slender redhead with a sprinkle of freckles on her nose, was sitting next to my desk, twisting a strand of long, straight hair when Iwalked into my office. I could tell she was nervous."Hi, I'm Dr. Ashton," I said, sitting down at my desk. Since this wasCasey's first visit, we were meeting in my cheerful office, not in an examroom. (After all, do you want to meet your doctor for the very first time in an exam room withyour clothes off? I wouldn't either. So my patients meet me in their clothes, at my desk.)Casey looked startled when I introduced myself. "Really? No way," she burst out. Thenshe blushed. "Sorry, it's just…; you don't look like a doctor."I laughed. I hear this all the time. Is it my blond hair? My leopard-print skirt and ToryBurch boots? Lucky for me, I didn't have to check my fashion sense at the door when theywere handing out degrees at Columbia Med School. Or my sense of humor, either. And it's a good thing, too. Without a sincere appreciation for a witty comment or thelatest color in Uggs, my job wouldn't be nearly so much fun. I love the humor, the sass, thestreet sense, and the totally exhilarating energy of my teenage patients. Although I do treatadult women, too (often the mothers of my teen patients), I spend most of my time everyday talking with, laughing with, and treating girls from their early teens to early twenties. That's what Casey and I did—talk and laugh. After a good chuckle overher confusion, we found ourselves talking about pretty much everything—why she'd come (bad cramps), her overall health (pretty good), and her lifein general (crazy busy, with dance team practice, SAT prep courses, collegevisits, and a long-time boyfriend). The more we talked about her incrediblyfull life, the more Casey reminded me of something—the single most importantthing I've learned from my patients. It's this:It is much, much harder to be a teenage girl now than ever before.Yeah, I know, the lonely-zitty-anxious-harassed teen years have neverexactly been an all-expense-paid vacation to Hawaii. But it's tougher todaythan ever. Even tougher than when I was a teen (and that wasn't so longago—really!). And also tougher, at least in some ways, than when your parentswere teens. Sure, you've got your iPod, your cell phone, your computer. You can text your best friend about tomorrow's math test and checkyour new crush's Facebook page at the same time with one hand tied behindyour back. You're smarter, more sophisticated, and way more connectedthan your parents were (or are). But you're also under phenomenalpressure—academic, social, physical, and sexual."You're supposed to get perfect grades, but even straight A's aren'tenough to get you into a good college," Casey told me. "You're supposedto volunteer, play sports, and be a genius at something, like violin or math."Don't forget being pretty, popular, and fun. And talk about social pressure—who knows what your so-called friends might be texting about you at anygiven moment? Sure, social pressure's been around forever. But today it'snonstop, always-on, 24-7.I asked Casey if she was sexually active. "No," she said. "But at schoolthere's definitely pressure to dress sexy and act like you're having sex."Where does all this extra sexual pressure come from? Everywhere. Onestudy showed that teens today may be exposed to twice as much sexualcontent on TV as they were even ten years ago. Another shows that themore sexy shows a teen watches, the more likely she is at risk of gettingpregnant. Then there's music, movies, videos, and social networking sites—not to mention the fact that it just takes one click of the mouse for someoneto e-mail a naked picture of you to a thousand of your closest friends. On top of all that social pressure, there's this physical fact of life. Notonly are girls dressing older and acting older but their bodies actually areolder, in some ways, than they used to be. Just a decade or so ago doctorswouldn't have expected your breasts to start developing until age ten. Nowwe know that your breasts might start budding as early as age seven oreight.2 Meanwhile, if you're white, you're likely to get your first periodabout three months earlier than girls did forty years ago, and if you'reblack, it will come a good five to six months earlier than it did in the late1960s. And two centuries ago girls hit puberty a good four or more yearslater than they do now. We don't really understand all the reasons for the shift, but we do knowthat better nutrition and general health play a big role. So with all this added pressure on you, are you getting lots of new informationand new resources to help you deal with it all? Or a new levelof respect for handling stress that previous generations just didn't face?Yeah, right. In your dreams. That's why I wrote the book. A new kind of teen—that's you—needs anew kind of doctor. That's me.R-E-S-P-E-C-TThe way health, sex, and physical information is handled by schools, teachers, doctors, and even some parents, you'd think today's girls wereliving in a time warp. Sex ed is still taught exactly the way it was thirtyyears ago (often it's all-abstinence-all-the-time). Most parents still have atough time talking with their daughters about their bodies: Many parentsdon't even know the right words for the female anatomy. (Not that I blamethem—their parents never talked to them about their bodies.) Even doctorsdon't seem to want to talk straight with girls. Old-school doctors alwaysseem to fall into two groups: the "Just-Say-No" group (as in "Can we talkabout safe sex?" "No.") and the "Free Love" group ("Whatever you do isbeautiful. Just use condoms.").Come on, people! This is the information age! If you ask me, both these approaches are disrespectful to girls. I believein giving you all the information you need, at the right age, so you canmake smart choices for your body and your emotional health. That doesn't mean I'd tell you it's OK to have sex at a young age: In fact, I'll tell you allthe medical reasons why that's not a good idea. But I'll also expect you touse your own best judgment and I'll treat you accordingly, with respect forthe choices you make. To make those choices, you need the very latest research and informationpresented in a straight-up way. That's why I wrote this book. I'm notgoing to take sides or preach one school of thought over another. You'resmart. You know how to get information and you know how to think. I'mgoing to give you the right information at the right time and let you makethe choices that are right for you.LESSONS FROM THE RUNWAYIf there's one thing Project Runway has taught us, it's that one size or styledoes not fit all. I trust you. And I know you can make the decisions that fityou—your physical and emotional development. To help you do that, I'm giving you all the facts, in a straight-as-an-arrowway, about pretty much everything your body will encounter through yourteens and early twenties. In Section One you'll read about what to expectfrom your body in puberty—how to deal with period problems, infections, injuries, and hormonal issues. You'll also learn how to care for your breastsand bones for the rest of your life. In Section Two I'll give you the latestresearch and thinking on sex—what it means medically for your body, brain, and emotional health when you decide to hook up or have sex atearly and later ages. I'll also explain the very strong medical evidence suggestingyou should wait until at least eighteen for sex. Meanwhile, I'll tellyou exactly how to protect and take care of yourself whenever you domake your decision about becoming sexually active. Finally, in SectionThree, I'll tell you how to build a body that will last for the rest of yourlife—through healthy eating, risk control, exercise, and learning to handlemood problems. To sum it all up, I'm basically offering you a free virtual visit to my office.I can't meet you and show you around like my actual patients. But I do want to welcome you to your new body and teach you everything you needto know to take care of it, love it, and enjoy it. I want you to own your body, because only you can care for it.WANT A LATTE?"Care for a chai? Some herbal tea? A latte?" my receptionist asks newpatients when they arrive. They find her sitting at her glass desk in frontof a curved wooden wall in the reception area of my office. The beverage menu and the reception area are usually a surprise fornew patients like Casey. "It looks like a spa," Casey told me. There's no bigwhite counter or glass window to check in at. No ugly institutional graycarpet. Everything's done in cream, chocolate, and pale blue, with splashyred end tables and softly glowing wall sconces instead of the usual harshoffice lights. If you were a new patient, my receptionist would serve you your beverageof choice and snap a digital photo for your record—I like to "see" my patientswhen I'm reviewing their records or talking to them on the phone. Then, beverage in hand, you and, if you wanted, your parents would be escortedto my office, where you'd find fresh flowers on my desk. Later, if you neededan exam, you could slip into a comfy spa robe (not one of those flimsy paperor polyester gowns) in the exam room and watch TV on a plasma screen, check your e-mail on a Mac, or make calls while waiting for me.And by the way, did I mention that everything's eco-friendly? I want torespect the planet, too. The robes and the TV may all sound a bit much. It's not that I'm allNew-Agey or that I'm trying to be some kind of Beverly Hills doctor to thestars. The truth is, it was just really fun dreaming up an office my patientswould like. I mean, nobody rolls out the red carpet for teen girls, treatingthem like young women who deserve to be pampered and cared for. Onlylater, after we'd designed the new office and opened for business, did Irealize just how much all the little details would mean to my patients. Thedetails practically shout "I care about you. I want you to have a nice experience here. I want everything you see, hear, and touch while you're hereto be respectful, soothing, caring."After all, you have enough stress in your life. I should be helping easeit, not making it worse.DOCTORS ARE A GIRL'S BEST FRIENDOK, so not every doctor's office is going to offer you a latte. I'm not tellingyou to pick your doctor based on her taste in end tables. But I do want youto find a doctor who makes you feel respected, well cared for, and, yes, maybe even a little pampered. That's especially important these days, now that girls are seeing gynecologistsat a younger age. The American College of Obstetricians andGynecologists—the huge national association that looks at data and makesrecommendations for doctors like me—says that you should start seeing agynecologist in your early teens, specifically between ages thirteen andfifteen. That's a surprise to most parents—especially moms, who probablydidn't see a gynecologist until their senior year of high school or later. If you're between thirteen and fifteen and haven't seen a gynecologist, you should (see the box on pages 13–15 on how to talk your parents into it).At the very least you need to see a gynecologist before you start having sex,so you understand all the medical consequences of your choices. For a lotof medical reasons I'll explain later, I think it's a really good idea for you towait until you're at least eighteen to have sex. But if you decide to becomeactive before that, it's my job to help you handle it in a smart way.PRIVATES PRACTICE: MORETHAN JUST VAGINASBefore they meet me, most of my patients think they're coming to see a"vagina doctor." But actually, "gynecologist" means the study of women—inmy case, young women in particular. It's my job to be familiar with every health issue that might affect you as a member of the female sex. Sure, I cantell you if that funny bump or itch down there is something to worry about.(And, by the way, I don't want you ever to be embarrassed to bring stuff likethat up. I have the same parts as you, and I do this all day long. To me examininga vagina is like examining an ear or nose—no big deal.) But I can alsohelp you learn how to take care of your breasts, your bones, your weight, and your mental state—not to mention treating period problems and hormonalimbalances. My job as a gynecologist specializing in young women isto take care of the whole package and help you understand this new bodyyou got when you reached puberty. Isn't that cool? I love my job. It makes me sad that many girls never get to see a gynecologist untilthey're leaving for college—that's like studying for the SATs after you'vetaken the test. It's so much better to learn everything you need to know inyour early teens, before you start running into the challenges you'll face later. Plus, a gynecologist like me probably will be the one doctor you seemore of than any other medical profession later in life. The sooner you findsomeone you trust and can confide in, the better.DR. ASHTON'S PLAYLISTSOver the years I've found myself repeating the same thingsOver…; and over…; and over…; to all my patients. These arethings I really want them to remember, so I say them again andagain. Sort of my personal playlist of advice. I've gathered upthese lists and put them in boxes throughout the book, stressingthe things I really want you to remember. Forgive me if I repeatinformation you've already heard, but these really are my greatesthits. Here are a few I share with my new patients:A new kind of teen needs a new kind of doctor. I respect my patients and care about their experiences—bothin their lives and in my office. I don't take sides: I give my patients all the information so they(and their parents) can make good decisions. It's not my job tomake choices for you. TRUE OR FALSE?You should go see a gynecologist for the first time whenyou're between ages thirteen and fifteen.TRUE.You need both a pediatrician and a gynecologist whenyou're in junior high and high school.TRUE.You always need a pelvic exam when you go to the gynecologist.FALSE. You don't usually need a pelvic exam unless you're sexually active. HOW TO TALK TO YOUR DOCTORJessica and her mother first came to see me about a year ago. Jessica wasthirteen, a flute player with a friendly face and short, glossy dark hair.Later I learned she had a radiant smile, too…; but she definitely wasn'tsmiling when I walked into my office. She and her mother were sittingrigidly in front of my desk, waiting to talk to me about Jessica's painfulcramps. They both looked like they'd rather be having their teeth drilledby a student dentist with a jackhammer.I didn't take it personally. I'm used to being the only person in the roomwho isn't nervous on a first visit. Typically new patients like Jessica worrythey'll have to put their feet up in the stirrups for a pelvic exam. Theirparents worry that they're giving their daughter a green light for sex justby mentioning the word "gynecologist"—let alone taking her for a visit."So what's going on?" I asked.I listened to Jessica describe her cramps, with her mom adding a fewdetails now and then."OK," I said. "I think I can help. And don't worry—I don't need to do apelvic exam.""Really?" asked Jessica. I could almost see her white knuckles unclench."You don't have to use that metal thing?" She meant the speculum, theinstrument used in pelvic exams to gently open the vagina."Nope," I said. "We won't need that until you're twenty-one, or untilyou're sexually active—which I hope won't be until you're at least eighteen."I explained that very strong medical evidence suggests that it's muchhealthier to postpone sex as long as possible. From the corner of my eye Icould see her mother relax. A few minutes later we were all laughing andchatting. BFFs!Not bad, I thought. Five minutes into the visit, they both feel better. And we haven't even stepped in the exam room yet!I just love my job. Here are a few more things I tell all my new patients to help them feela little better about the process. Understanding what to expect from yourfirst visit can make your job and your gynecologist's job a lot easier.1. You shouldn't be embarrassed. All I do, every day, is take care of girls and women. We've all got the sameparts. I've given birth, I've delivered babies, and I look at female anatomyall day long. To me looking at a vagina is so not a big deal. In fact, I'd ratherlook at a vagina than a foot (sometimes vaginas are much cleaner thanfeet!). If you take away just one thing from this book, remember this: Pleasedon't ever feel embarrassed or ashamed of your body. Go ahead. Ask your doctor anything. She (or he) wants to help you but can't unless you say what's on your mind.2. Anything you tell me is confidential.By law I'm not allowed to tell your parents if you're sexually active or not. They can pound on my door and beg and plead, stalk me with phone callsor spam me online, and I'm still not going to tell them whether or not you'rehaving sex. There are only two conditions where I do have to break patient confidentiality:If I feelyour safety or someone else's safety is at risk, I need to tellyour parents and I might need to report my concerns to the appropriateagency or authority. If you have chlamydia or gonorrhea, the lab that processes thetests will automatically report it to the state health department.Your name will go on file as someone who has that particular STD,so the department of health can keep track of who gets what andmake sure that everyone who needs treatment gets it. (Most of mypatients find this rather alarming—and one more good reason towait until at least eighteen before becoming sexually active.)3. I trust you—but I'm not a psychic.I expect that you'll be honest with me about what you're doing or not doingso I can treat you appropriately. If you tell me you're a virgin, I'm going tobelieve you . . . and I won't give you the same treatment as a girl who'ssexually active. And if you don't tell me about problems you're having—itching, burning, discharge, whatever—I won't be able to help you.Bottom line: If you're not honest with me, you won't receive the rightmedical treatment, and I won't be able to help you stay healthy. So don'tbe shy: Tell me what you're up to.4. I don't need to do Pap smears or pelvicexams until you're sexually active. That's a huge relief for most of my patients. But once you've had vaginalintercourse, you need to let me know—then it's time for what my patientJessica called "that metal thing" (the speculum). As long as you're a virgin,I probably won't need you to put your feet in the stirrups. Most of my patientsfind this another very good reason to hang on to their virginity aslong as possible.5. Exams won't hurt. One last thing to keep in mind. When you do finally need the stirrups andthe speculum during your exam, please trust me that if the exam is donecorrectly, it really shouldn't hurt.AN M.D. OF YOUR OWNMany parents and girls don't realize that teens need both a pediatricianand a gynecologist. The pediatrician helps with healthissues affecting kids of both genders. The gynecologist advises onissues specific to girls' growing bodies. Of course, good pediatriciansknow all about girls' issues, too, and can even perform pelvicexams. But—and of course I'm biased!—I think gynecologistslike me, with specialized experience, offer girls special expertiseand knowledge that only come from seeing patients like you allday, every day.Unfortunately, many parents don't take their daughters to thegynecologist until the girls are about to leave for college. By thentheir daughters have missed the chance to learn about their bodiesfrom an early age and to get important information and advice when they need it—like what you can do in your early teens toprotect your breasts and bones for the rest of your life and howto make great decisions about sex. I don't blame parents: Manyjust don't want to think about the fact that your body is maturing,so it doesn't occur to them that you now also need a doctor whotreats grown-ups, not just a pediatrician. If you don't have a gynecologist of your own by the time you'rein your mid-teens, talk to your parents about finding one. Thismight be a little awkward, especially if you think they'll thinkyou're asking because you're sexually active (BTW, if you are, it'seven more important to find a gynecologist soon). Here are threestrategies to persuade your mother or father to help you find agreat gynecologist when you're in your mid-teens…; and hopefullylong before you need one.STRATEGY 1. Show your parents this book. Say "Mom (or Dad), thedoctor who wrote this thinks it's a great idea to wait as long aspossible for sex." (Your parents will really like that.) Then add,"I'd love to see a doctor like her. Can we find one?" You might alsomention that adolescent gynos are not just "vagina" docs: We'rethe physicians who know the most about breast problems, bonehealth, period problems, and hormonal issues. What more couldyour parents ask for?STRATEGY 2. Blame the cramps. If you have menstrual cramps, this is a great—and not too embarrassing—reason for seeing a gynecologist. This is the twenty-first century, after all, and sufferingis out. Say "Mom (or Dad), these cramps are really bad and myfriend So-and-So saw a gynecologist for hers, and it really helped. Can I do that?"

This book is written in a format that my daughter can easily relate to. It is written as if you are speaking directly with an informed friend. My teenage daughter and I sat down and read the book together (a nice bonding experience), and every page was enlightening. The book is great for a reference, but I really enjoyed the discussions that were inspired by the topics in the book.I would suggest this book for daughters, moms, and grandmoms. Having your sons and their dads read it wouldn't be a bad idea either, maybe they would understand the female sex better.

Our daughters cannot make sound decisions if they don't have all the facts. This book is full of facts! I believe all women/girls will benefit from the information provided. Don't think that your daughters are not talking/thinking about these issues - they are! It is a different time-and-day and a more difficult time for young women than ever before in our society. At least, after reading this book they will not have ignorance as a reason for making poor decisions.

This is a great book that EVERY mother and young girl should read. I am a nurse and have always tried to be open and honest with my daughter about her body and sexuality. This book helps me make sure that everything I may have missed telling myself will not be completely missed. Dr. Ashton is open and honest in a light humor kind of way. I purchased this book myself to make sure that it was appropriate for my young daughter and her cousin to read and give it a "five star thumbs up" review. Even with me being a nurse, it is still hard to talk with my daughter about some of the personal issues. Thanks to Dr. Ashton for writing this helpful book for our girls.

I read Dr. Ashton's book and I had my 16 year old daughter read it too. It's chock full of important and useful information, written in a style that is inviting, warm, chatty and funny. I loved the shaded blocks with bulleted key points that are worth reinforcing. It's amazing how much both my daughter and I learned and how many misconceptions Dr. Ashton uncovers and resolves in this book. Teenage girls are a different breed. With all of the pressures of today, it sure is nice to have a reliable resource directed to a complicated time in life. A MUST read !!!!!

This is a WONDERFUL BOOK!!! Very detailed and all inclusive. Great guide for parents and/or very good for teens to read privately.!!

Great guide for my daughter's questions

Bought this for my teenage granddaughter. Answered many questions she hadn't thought of yet... Excellent book

I Bought this for my daughter after the recommendation of our doctor. good info for girls, easy to read and look up
