Being an avid hiker and an avid reader of hiking guides (when it's too cold and white to hike), I purchased several hiking guides to help me plan my recent vacation to New England. This guide is by far the best of that lot. This guide describes 50 hikes in the White Mountains (45 in northern New Hampshire, 5 in extreme western Maine) divided into 8 regions by geography. Each hike contains detailed directions to the trailhead, a very good map that shows you almost everything along the trail except contour lines, and a description that usually lasts for several pages. The descriptions are divided into two sections: the first just gives directions for walking the trail along with the major highlights, while the second gives lots of information about the scenery (animate and inanimate) you are likely to see on the trail. In fact, this guide gives you more information on the forest and fauna than just about any guide I have ever read. Length of the hikes range from 0.5 miles to 5 miles with the average at 2 or 3 miles. Also, some of the trails can be combined to form longer hikes of up to 10 miles. This guide emphasizes hiking with kids, so one might think the appropriate audience is somewhat limited. However, as a single man with no kids, I can attest that this guide will be useful to anyone interested in White Mountain hiking. In fact, much of the information "intended for kids" I found to be just good information about the trail's natural setting (as described above). So don't think this guide is one of the specialized type; it can actually be used by a very broad audience. If there was one drawback to this guide, it would be the significant changes that have occurred on some of these trails since the book went to press. On my personal hiking journeys, I discovered:1) the trail to Arethusa Falls (highest in NH) has been rerouted and2) the Old Man profile in Franconia Notch has collapsed. So there will need to be an updated version published in a few years. However, the publication date is still fairly current, and trail changes are beyond the author's control. In summary, this is an excellent guide that anyone interested in White Mountain dayhiking should own. Very highly recommended.

This is a terrific book to use when you are going to hike in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. It is rich with information presented in an easily accessible format. Useful introductory chapters tell you how to get the most out of the book, make suggestions for hiking with children, and discuss the natural history of the region, including line illustrations of plants and a few animals. A map shows the location of each of the 50 hikes, which are divided up between the Franconia Notch, Waterville Valley/Squam Lake, Kancamagus, Crawford Notch, Pinkham Notch, North Conway, Evans Notch and North Country regions. An easy-to-read chart lists all the hikes and their difficulty level, distance and whether or not there is a river, a waterfall, a lake or pond, a view, rock ledges, wooden bridge, blueberry bushes or special geological feature on that particular hike. A short introduction to each region details facilities available such as camping sites and visitor centers. Several pages are devoted to each hike, including length, elevation gain, time requirement and difficulty level, a description of the trail, highlights for kids, directions to get there, a map and a photograph. The book concludes with a bibliography and index. If you get one book to help you explore the White Mountains, it should be this one, particuarly if you are hiking with children.

Out of print, but better for selecting kids trips than the current edition.See my review of both versions here: AMC's Best Day Hikes in the White Mountains: Four-Season Guide to 50 of the Best Trails in the White Mountain National Forest"

This book is perfect for people wanting to do beginner (and even a couple moderate) hikes in the White Mountains. It is very easy to use and detailed. All hiking books should use the format of this book. I highly recommend it.If you are looking for more agressive hikes or multi-day trips, get the AMC White Mountain Guide with maps.

great guild if your on your way up. easy to find the kind of hike you are looking for

Went to the White Mountains with another adult friend and picked this book because the walks looked about our speed. The directions are great, descriptions and nature discussions also very informative and entertaining. I particularly liked the "what the kids get out of it" feature for each walk. I particularly recommend the walk to Diana's Baths, a waterful near North Conway, NH.

Like Water for Chocolate: A Novel in Monthly Installments, with Recipes, Romances, and Home Remedies, by Laura Esquivel

From Publishers Weekly

Each chapter of screenwriter Esquivel's utterly charming interpretation of life in turn-of-the-century Mexico begins with a recipe--not surprisingly, since so much of the action of this exquisite first novel (a bestseller in Mexico) centers around the kitchen, the heart and soul of a traditional Mexican family. The youngest daughter of a well-born rancher, Tita has always known her destiny: to remain single and care for her aging mother. When she falls in love, her mother quickly scotches the liaison and tyrannically dictates that Tita's sister Rosaura must marry the luckless suitor, Pedro, in her place. But Tita has one weapon left--her cooking. Esquivel mischievously appropriates the techniques of magical realism to make Tita's contact with food sensual, instinctual and often explosive. Forced to make the cake for her sister's wedding, Tita pours her emotions into the task; each guest who samples a piece bursts into tears. Esquivel does a splendid job of describing the frustration, love and hope expressed through the most domestic and feminine of arts, family cooking, suggesting by implication the limited options available to Mexican women of this period. Tita's unrequited love for Pedro survives the Mexican Revolution the births of Rosaura and Pedro's children, even a proposal of marriage from an eligible doctor. In a poignant conclusion, Tita manages to break the bonds of tradition, if not for herself, then for future generations. Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

Take one part Whitney Otto's How To Make an American Quilt (McKay, 1991), add a smidgen of magical realism a la Garcia Marquez, follow up with several quixotic characters, garnish with love, and you'll have Like Water for Chocolate , a thoroughly enjoyable and quirky first novel by Mexican screenwriter Esquivel. Main character Tita is the youngest of three daughters born to Mama Elena, virago extraordinaire and owner of the de la Garza ranch. Tita falls in love with Pedro, but Mama Elena will not allow them to marry, since family tradition dictates that the youngest daughter remain at home to care for her mother. Instead, Mama Elena orchestrates the marriage of Pedro and her eldest daughter Rosaura and forces Tita to prepare the wedding dinner. What ensues is a poignant, funny story of love, life, and food which proves that all three are entwined and interdependent. Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquirel is a novel chalk-full of rich and beautiful metaphors and figurative language, magical realism and best of all FOOD! The emotion that has been poured into writing this piece is clearly evident and has created a meaningful, emotional and heartfelt journey for every reader. Watch as Tita discovers herself, learns life lessons and most importantly about passionate love.Again, the book is centered around cooking, which is personified throughout the book and is spoken with an air of such love, passion and pride… it becomes something more than just cooking. Cooking is a vector of emotion in this book, the aroma’s, the sounds, the smells, the feelings etc. all reflect Tita’s emotions and thoughts. To reflect this further, a motif is used throughout the book: hot and cold are used constantly to compare good and bad. Mama Elena is almost always described to be frigid, chilling and cold. Whenever Tita is upset or during periods of depression; she is described to have a chronic chilling feeling in her bones. John is described to be warm, symbolizing that he truly loves her and respects her. There is another symbol related to this which will become a prevalent point towards the end of the book. Over and over again, a tiny flame is used to describe internal peace, love and passion. This is what cures Tita of the unbearable coldness. The fire is lit by people that love you and lift you up. To bring the motif of temperature and flame full circle, in cooking heat is often applied to cook something. Before the help of the flame, food is raw and inedible. With the heat, the food is turned into an emotional work of art.It takes Tita almost the entirety of the novel to find her true self and to understand love and passion. The book is named “Like Water for Chocolate”, because it is describing boiling water. Boiling water is on the brink of boiling over, but it hasn’t and doesn’t boil over. Instead, there is turmoil inside the pot, but nothing on the outside. This is a beautiful and well-thought-out metaphor expressing that Tita wants so badly to stand up to her mother, but her whole life, her mother never acted as a mother to her. Tita spent so much of her life trying to get her mother's approval, even if she didn’t know it fully.Like Water for Chocolate is a beautiful book, it is a book that withdrawals emotion within us just as it does in the book. This book will make you smile and then make you angry and then make you cry, with tears of love and sadness. It is not an easy read, emotionally… probably because the message of this book resonates so deeply within us.

My book club read this book Mexico as we "read our way around the world." We were not disappointed! This was my first introduction to magical realism, and I was in love from the first page. Don't expect the characters or story to be extremely developed. This is one of those books that you might find yourself speeding through and then wildly contemplating once it's over. While the story isn't pointedly about Mexican history or culture, we learned about those aspects in perfect little doses through the writing style and story line. My group was interested and entertained. I enjoyed the book so much that I bought myself a copy after I read the library's copy.

I was first introduced to Laura Esquivel's Like Water for Chocolate through research into the style of writing used in one of my personal favorite novels, Toni Morrison's Beloved. Although both books are in the same genre (magical realism), Esquivel structures her novel around "recipes, romances, and home remedies". Each of the twelve chapters begins with a recipe, usually for food, and makes a fluid transition to our protagonist, Tita, and her involvement in preparation of a meal. Tita was raised during the Mexican Revolution by her family's ranch cook; her work in the kitchen is the basis for much of the novel's structure. We're given recipes for Mexican cuisines, little things like matches and home remedies for diverse afflictions such as burns and bad breath. The story revolves primarily around Tita's struggle against family tradition and consequently her birth mother, and Tita's struggle for love. Esquivel paints it all beautifully.

Like Water for Chocolate takes place during the Mexican revolution, and is the story of the De La Garza family. Their story is told through recipes and home remedies, and the book is broken out into twelve chapters; each chapter is one month of the year. However, the story takes place over a twenty-year period.I liked some of the themes in the book: finding a sense of purpose in one’s life, the things we give importance to that maybe aren’t so important, and what love really is.If you like mystical realism this might be a book you’d want to check out.

#2,368,739 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Here in Brazil, I read this good book. This book comes from a diary of the Jew, Lithuanian and anarchist Alexander Berkman (1870 - 1936). This good book begins in the lasts weeks of 1919, at the aftermath of the Russian Revolution of 1917. On chapter XIII of this book, writen in March 1920 Berkman and Emma Goldman meet Lenin, whom Berkman describes as speaking these sentences: "The peasant doesn't like us. Lenin They are backward and strogly imbued with the sense of private ownership. That spirit must be discouraged and erradicated."This book describes the Leninist Soviet Union as a mafiacracy under the command of Lenin. There's fear, famine end suffering for the people and the communists with luxes and privileges. A woman of Moscow that the author was fried in Tzar's times saw her mother and two brothers to die of famine during Lenin's government.Among the more than one thousand book that I read today, just about a dozen books are mainly about Lenin's government. And this book is a good primary source, about Lenin and his mafiacracy. Tcheka gives fear for all people's persons, while Tcheka is also the commander of corruption. To robber and to be the only police at the same time was the Cheka's mission and this Satanic instituition made these missions at the same time, during Lenin's government. This good book ends in September 1921 with Alexander Berkman's decision to leave Russia, described in these sentences: "Gray are the passing days. One by one the embers of hope have died out. Terror and despotism have crushed the life born in October.... Dictatorship is trampling the masses under foot. The Revolution is dead; its spirit cries in the wilderness.... I have decided to leave Russia."

The Bolshevik Myth by Alexander Berkman is an interesting primary source which sheds an insider's look at the earliest phase of Communism in Russia. Berkman was a long-time anarchist who was deported in 1920 from the United States to Russia. The deportation was part of a mass deportation of leftist foreign radicals after the original "Red Scare" and "Palmer Raids" of the post-World War I period. Berkman and other well-known foreign born leftists, including Emma Goldman, as well as other, less well-known revolutionaries, were put on the transport ship, the USAT Buford, and sent to Revolutionary Russia.Berkman captures the excitement of leftist revolutionaries who are like Moses looking at the Promised Land. Berkman and his fellow Buford group look at Revolutionary Russia as the great end to which they have been striving their entire lives. All had been imprisoned for their leftists beliefs and many had been beaten for those beliefs and most had surrendered anything resembling a normal life for the sake of The Revolution. Russia would be the consummation of the dreams of their lives. The scales fall of their eyes quickly. Even though many of them are competent tradesmen, they cannot find work because of the incompetence and inefficiencies of the Bolshevik system. They spend months with no work, receiving a minimal "pyock" (ration) and are reduced to selling their American goods into the black-market to survive, even though the Bolsheviks have outlawed private trading on penalty of imprisonment. Over the course of the book, Berkman recounts at various times how this Buford deportee had been sent to Siberia and that Buford deportee had been shot without due process by the Tcheka. The Eschaton that the leftist Revolutionaries awaited was not the one they had spent years in exile waiting for.Berkman's work is priceless for his ability to tell a story that spans the gap between the average, forgotten Russian and the upper reaches of Bolshevik society. Bekman meets and interacts with Lenin, Kamenev, and Zinoviev. He meets Peter Kropotkin and Bertrand Russell, who was visiting Russia as part of a delegation of Labor representatives who visited Russia in order to get information in order to promote the lifting of the Allied blockade. Berkman also attends the funeral of John Reed (who was the hero of Warren Beatty's hagiographic "Reds," which was nominated for the Oscar for Best Picture in 1981.)The Russia that Berkman entered was still in the throes of the Russian Civil War. White generals were still fighting in the Ukraine and in the North. The Allies were still enforcing a blockade against the Communists. Berkman is there when the Civil War ends and the long-suffering people of Russia expect the Bolsheviks to finally back off their war time measures, only to be disappointed when the Bolsheviks decide to promote what they feel is a return to the master they had thought they had gotten rid of with the Revolution. Berkman writes:Almost every otvetstvenny (responsible) Communist is gone to Moscow to attend the Ninth Congress of the Party. Grave questions are at issue, and Lenin and Trotsky have sounded the keynote --- militarization of labor. The papers are filled with the discussion of the proposed introduction of yedinolitchiye (one-man industrial management) to take the place of the present collegiate form. "We must learn from the bourgeoisie," Lenin says, "and use them for our purposes."  Among the labor elements there is strong opposition to the new plan, but Trotsky contends that the unions have failed in the management of industry: the proposed system is to organize production more efficiently. The labor men, on the contrary, say that the workers had not been given the opportunity, extreme State centralization having taken over the functions of the unions. yedinolitchiye, they claim, means complete charge of factory and shop by one. "Yedinolitchiye, they claim, means complete charge of factory and shop by one man, the socalled spets (specialists), to the exclusion of the workers from management.  "Step by step we are losing everything we've gained by the Revolution," a shop committee-man said to me. "The new plan means the return of the former master. The spets is the old bourzhooi, and now he is coming back to whip us to work again. But last year Lenin himself denounced the plan as counter-revolutionary, when the Mensheviki advocated it. They are still in prison for it."Berkman, Alexander (2010-02-22). The Bolshevik Myth (Kindle Locations 1326-1329). MacMay. Kindle Edition.Berkman also describes the corruption of the Bolsheviks and the terror reign imposed by the Tcheka. The Bolsheviks routinely kicked workers out of their residences so as to acquire them for themselves. Berkman describes a luxurious party given for the British Labor delegation, complete with servants, while Russians were starving:"Delovoi Dvor, the Soviet Hotel assigned to the British guests, has been entirely renovated, and looks clean and fresh. The large dining room is tastefully decorated with crimson banners and mottoes of welcome. Socialist legends of the solidarity of the workers of the world and the triumph of the Revolution through the dictatorship of the proletariat speak from the walls in various tongues. Potted plants lend the spacious room warmth and color.  Covers were set for a large number, including the delegates, the official representatives of the Soviet Government, some members of the Third International, and the invited spokesmen of labor. Russian caviar, soup, white bread, two kinds of meat and a variety of vegetables were on the menu. When fried chicken was served, I saw some of the Britishers exchange wondering glances.  "A jolly good meal for starving Russia," a delegate at my side remarked to his neighbor in the lull of clattering dishes and laughter.  "Rather. Natty wench," the other replied with a suggestive wink at the winsome young waitress serving him."Thought the Bolsheviks had done away with servants."  Angelica Balabanova, sitting opposite me, looked perturbed.Berkman, Alexander (2010-02-22). The Bolshevik Myth (Kindle Locations 1574-1582). MacMay. Kindle Edition. The Bolsheviks also did not do away with the death penalty, prisons or the secret police. They outdid the Tsar by eliminating due process and re-instituting forced labor. Berkman describes a scene where a black market he visits is raided. Later he meets some of the marketeers who tell them that they were released by the Tcheka through the simple expedient of handing over their money. Given the Communist history for declaring dissidents insane, this observation from Berkman is chilling:"The Government pretended to consider Maria insane and had placed her in a sanitarium, from which she recently escaped."Berkman, Alexander (2010-02-22). The Bolshevik Myth (Kindle Locations 1629-1630). MacMay. Kindle Edition.Berkman was an Anarchist, and not a Communist. The reader does not get much insight into the politics that set off the different leftist groups, but the plethora of groups is dizzying. There were the Social Revolutionaries and the Social Democrats, which split to become the Mensheviks and Bolsheviks. There were the Anarchists and Berkman mentions Maximalists and other groups. Clearly, one of the shocking things for Berkman was that the sense of leftist revolutionary solidarity that he had experienced in the West was betrayed by the Bolsheviks. The Bolsheviks oppressed the other leftists parties as badly - and more effectively - than had the capitalists.""We know it," he retorted; "but anti-Soviet handbills had been found in the factories, and my men thought they might have some connection with Tch---'s laboratory. But he stubbornly refused to answer questions."  "Well, that's an old practice of arrested revolutionists," I reminded him.  Bakaiev grew indignant. "That is why I'm holding him," he declared."Such tactics were justified against the bourgeois régime, but it is an insult to treat us so. Tch--- acts as if we were gendarmes."  "Do you think it matters by whom one is kept in jail?"  "Well, don't let us discuss it, Berkman," he said. "You don't know for whom you are interceding."  "And the other two men?"  "They were found with Tch---," he replied. "We are not persecuting Anarchists, believe me; but these men are not safe at liberty."Berkman, Alexander (2010-02-22). The Bolshevik Myth (Kindle Locations 1643-1649). MacMay. Kindle Edition.Berkman was there for the final betrayal of the Revolution. The sailors at Konigsburg protested the starvation of the Petrograd workers by the Bolsheviks. The rebellion by those sailors had triggered the revolution against the Tsar. The sailors had been operating through a communal system. Rather than deal with the sailors, however, the Bolsheviks brought in troops and crushed the sailors' rebellion. For an anarchist, like Berkman this was the last straw. After approximately one year in "paradise," Berkman realized that the Bolsheviks were corrupt and dictatorial, and he decided to leave Russia to spread the truth about the workers paradise. To a certain extent, we can feel a bit of schadenfreude for the fate of Berkman, but we ought to give him credit. There were a lot of Westerners who going to Russia and being taken in by the Potemkin villages of Communism. Many came back and uttered fatuous nonsense like Lincoln Steffens who said "I have seen the future and it works" and John Reed who became the hero of Warren Beatty's hagiography. Those people were either fools or they knew what Berkman knew and lied. Berkman, at least, had the honesty to part company from the "party line" in writing this interesting work of eyewitness history.

Rip off. Very small book. Don;'t know why anyone would find it useful.

I wanted a good grammar guide and I got it.

A bit hard for beginers... but awesome tool for me to teach

Like the recorded pronounciations

This grammar resource is awesome. It is somewhat exhausting to search online every time I have a grammar question during my journey into learning Italian. However, this grammar book has very clear explanations for the key grammar points you would need help with and multiple examples in Italian and English for each. This way you can see how it is used and what it means. This book starts with a pronunciations guide and then progresses from simplest grammar to more advanced, covering most of the grammar needed by beginner and intermediate learners. It is a great one-stop resource for questions you may have as your studies progress. Well worth the price.

This is as the name says the essencial guide to Italian, it can really help you to put your ideas together. Sometimes when we are learning a language we feel like “oh,what if I used such expression...? This book can be a good starting point for this.

This book is very useful and is easy to use. The author organized in in such a way that even novice speakers can comprehend. I studied this book before going to Italy and it was a big help. Highly recommend!
