About the Author
Robert Carver worked in the City of London for over a decade. He initially traded exotic derivative products for Barclays investment bank and then worked as a portfolio manager for AHL - one of the world's largest systematic hedge funds - before, during and after the global financial meltdown of 2008. He was responsible for the creation of AHL's fundamental global macro strategy and then managed the fund's multi-billion dollar fixed income portfolio before retiring from the industry in 2013. Robert, who has bachelors and masters degrees in Economics, now systematically trades his own portfolios of futures and equities. Not as impressive as Robert Carver's first book, 'Systematic Trading' without the same quantity of insightful and instructive anecdotes. This book lacks a solid narrative or unifying thread that is consistent throughout the book, whereas the first title had the 2008 financial meltdown and the author's evolution as a trader as a theme with which more dry factual matter was blended together. Read Robert's 'Systematic Trading' instead.
I have read quite a many books about portfolio construction and I have to say this is one of the best or even the best book about the topic.The book introduces a practical way to build portfolios. I liked the discussion about practical limitations that are caused by investor’s home country, available etfs, investable money etc.
I've been a fan of Robert Carver's work for quite a while now, and this book definitely adds to the knowledge and experiences he willingly shares with others. Carver skillfully mixes theory and practicality, making this a great reference guide for intermediate and very experienced traders alike. The Epilogue section alone is pure gold, even though it is only one page long. This book will keep me quite busy for a while with investigating various portfolio sizing approaches. Highly Recommended!
For the intermediate level DIY investor, this is the best book I have seen (out of a pool of around 50). It has excellent coverage of investment costs and how to factor them in when creating a diversified portfolio, whether you use primarily ETFs, individual instruments, or a mix of the two. There is in-depth coverage of all asset types, and how to factor them into a portfolio using collective funds, individual instruments, or a combination thereof. Also, for people that have been less than systematic putting together a portfolio over the years (ex: you have a mutual fund acquired over 10 years ago that has had 3 name changes/fund reorgs) there is an excellent, in depth how-to on straightening out your portfolio.Like the also excellent Systematic Trading this is not exceptionally easy reading (all portfolio suggestions are carefully crafted and the principles behind then are laid out in detail) but is well worth the effort. Even if you don't read all of it, one could do considerably worse then sampling the portfolios laid out for various investor types (small portfolio to institutional investor), figuring out which matches your circumstance, and adjusting your portfolio allocations as described.Highly recommended.
I bought this book right as it came out, having enjoyed his first book "Systematic Trading" a lot.Have been reading "Smart Portfolios' since this morning and I must say I am enjoying this one even more.The book has similarities to books by Willliam Bernstein (for example The Four Pillars of Investing), but goes into more detail at a practical level and has a deeper theoretical foundation in my opinion. The ideas and examples are worth your time.Highly recommended to everyone who wants (or needs) to be serious about investing!
