The Sunday of Life, by Raymond Queneau

From the Back Cover

The Sunday of Life, the late Raymond Queneau's tenth novel, was first published in French by Gallimard in 1951 and is now appearing for the first time in this country. In the ingenuous ex-Private Valentin Bru, the central figure in The Sunday of Life, Queneau has created that oddity in modern fiction, the Hegelian naif. Highly self-conscious yet reasonably satisfied with his lot, imbued with the good humor inherent in the naturally wise, Valentin meets the painful nonsense of life's adventures with a slightly bewildered detachment.

About the Author

Raymond Queneau (1903-1976) is acknowledged as one of the most influential of modern French writers, having helped determine the shape of twentieth-century French literature, especially in his role with the Oulipo, a group of authors that includes Italo Calvino, Georges Perec, and Harry Mathews, among others.Barbara Wright has translated several Raymond Queneau novels; indeed, as John Updike wrote in The New Yorker, she "has waltzed around the floor with the Master so many times by now that she follows his quirky French as if the steps were in English." She has also translated works by Alain Robbe-Grillet, Robert Pinget, Nathalie Sarraute, and Marguerite Duras. She lives in London.

Book and seller were great!

Like most Raymond Queneau novels, 'The Sunday of Life' is a seemingly inconsequential novel that suddenly opens up onto a philosophical vortex.Valentin Bru is a retiring private soldier in Bordeaux, a veteran of colonial warfare singled out for marriage by a middle-aged merceress whom he has never met. Bru's sole desire is to be a street sweeper, but soon inherits a frame-selling shop in Paris. An earlier visit to the city on a honeymoon he had to take on his own because of his wife's concern for business, saw him engaged in farcical adventures ending up coincidentally at the funeral of his mother-in-law's younger lover. Now in his shop, he becomes a kind of confessional for the local traders, passing on the information to his wife who, unknown to him, has become a clairvoyant. So far, so funny. The novel proceeds with Queneau's usual gorgeous style, that decaptively loose mix of vernacular and circumlocution that creates comedy by over-verbalising the banal, or pitting his hero's innocence and good faith against the cynical, or customs he simply doesn't understand.Soon, however, time intrudes, as Valentin acts on a desire to 'trap' time, to follow the long hand of a clock without losing himself in reveries or distractions. The title derives from Hegel, whose spirit haunts the book, and refers, apparently, to a point where history ends and everyday is like Sunday, a timeless realm of pure consciousness. Or something. I don't know anything about Hegel, you'd have to look it up. Certainly, there are at least two strands of time in the novel, the world of the late 30s, Nazism, the impending Fall of France, and the seemingly detached present tense Valentin seems to float through. this is reinforced by a plot with fortune tellers and a hero who predicts a coming war in a 1952 novel that knows he's right.Philosophers will probably enjoy all this - the rest of us can relish the simpler pleasures: linguistic play; deadpan funny characters; deadpan silly, almost irrelevant comic situations; deadpan dialogue; a sunny love of Paris.

This is one of my favourite Queneau novels. Actually it's one of my favourite novels! In one slim volume Queneau achieves a poignancy and oblique truthfulness that is very rarely found in 'modernist' literature. Much is said of Queneau's technique - the neologisms, anachronisms, puns, mathematics - but to focus on these surface aspects is, in my opinion, partly missing the point. Queneau puts all of himself into his works and these technical aspects reflect his deep love of language and recognition of the fact that a novel is essentially an 'artificial' creation. Why shouldn't the writer do as he pleases? But there is much more to the man Queneau. Aside from his linguistic play, his works are always deeply humane. It is enlightening to read Queneau's list of 100 favourite novels. Aswell as Jacques the Fatalist you will find Hemingway, Faulkner and Dickens. Queneau, like Calvino, considers himself a reader first, writer second. Like Calvino he considers reading itself an art form. Certainly he calls upon us to exercise our 'artistic' talents but also he requires us to see each of his novels as an 'artifact', as simply 'some writing'. A good novel can be like a window: giving us a 'view' of some created world, or focussing our attention on the 'pane of glass' itself; Queneau's novels do both. We are voyeurs of the bumbling of his characters but we can also see the frame, never forgetting that this is a novel that we're reading. And so Valentin Bru, like all his most endearing characters, is a person and an archetype. He embodies the deepest concerns of the novel (he is a naif, gifted with the "good humour" that means he "cannot be fundamentally bad or base", encapsulating the quote by Hegel with which the novel begins) and yet we can empathise with him as a typically flawed specimen of humanity, trying to pass his time on Earth as painlessly as possible. Like Pierrot (Pierrot mon ami), like Cidrolin (The Blue Flowers), like Alfred (The Last Days). It is my belief that all these novels, all these characters, ask the same question: why do we do what it is we do? Queneau always seems to answer, never unequivocally ofcourse: because we are human. Valentin Bru does what he does because it doesn't matter what he does, he could do something else, or not. Queneau's characters and novels have no bounds, no limitations. They suggest and accept all possibilities. This is what makes his work, and The Sunday of Life especially, so profoundly and poignantly humane.

Creative Strategy: A Guide for Innovation (Columbia Business School Publishing)

From Publishers Weekly

Columbia Business School lecturer Duggan's follow-up to his 2007 book, Strategic Intuition, is a practical guide to a big idea about innovation, aimed at individuals working by themselves, on teams, or in the context of a whole organization. The real difficulty with innovation is not the execution, but coming up with great ideas in the first place. Duggan uses the neuroscience of innovation to describe the brain's learning-and-memory process of analysis to come up with the best new ideas, and to break down the process step by step—applying the strategic intuition of the previous book in a systematic way to solve problems. The process is broken into three stages: problem identification; the what-works scan, a survey of how others have solved the same problem; and creative combination, which analyzes that process to arrive at a solution. Duggan politely but determinedly critiques the management tools selected by Bain & Co. for its annually compiled top 10 list, describing the pros and cons of various methods and why his is superior. A slim but persuasive guide to innovative thinking. Agent: Michael Bourret, Dystel & Goderich Literary Management. (Dec.)

I learned about this book before it was published and eagerly awaited its release. I've read all of Duggan's other books (Napoleon's Glance: The Secret of Strategy (Nation Books),The Art of What Works: How Success Really Happens and Strategic Intuition: The Creative Spark in Human Achievement) and enjoyed them. In fact, I've recommended them to influential strategic thinkers at my company and have pushed to incorporate their ideas in our strategic principles. Before I critique this book, allow me to give you a bit of context I've earned after having read all of Duggan's books. First, all of his books make the same points. He refreshes the examples, which is appreciated, but the ideas are the same. Each book puts a new wrapper on these ideas by relabeling them. What was Napoleon's Glance was relabled as "the art of what works." The art of what works was revealed to be "strategic intuition." This most recent book's contribution is to tell us that one develops creative strategies by using strategic intuition. In each successive book, Duggan allocates more pages to explaining this semantic tableau without advancing any new thinking. Old wine in a new bottle. That's probably my biggest disappointment. I should have stopped with the first book.I agree with him that synthesis is the missing piece overlooked at business schools and is sometimes overrun or allegedly replaced by deeper analysis. Duggan makes it clear that analysis is no substitute for synthesis. I've looked far and wide for good frameworks, processes and tools to teach people to get better at synthesis. I have not found the silver bullet. That's why, when I read the description of Creative Strategy, I got really excited. This is supposed to be the book for putting his ideas into practice. Well, after reading it I can tell you that it has the same tool (he calls it the insight matrix) that was in The Art of What Works: How Success Really Happens and Strategic Intuition: The Creative Spark in Human Achievement. He does give you more specifics about the set of workshops you could hold to get a group of people to apply the insight matrix but I think that was pretty evident already. I was hoping for a better tool and didn't get one.Not only does he talk about the insight matrix yet again, he uses the same shop worn example from GE Appliances in the late 1990s to show how to put it into practice. I could forgive it being old if it weren't for the fact that it doesn't illustrate one of Duggan's key points, that new ideas are combinations of past ones. In the GE example, the GE team is able to solve their problem by copying wholesale an idea from another GE business unit. No synthesis of ideas to create a novel idea occurs.Duggan does provide all kinds of examples to show strategic intuition/the art of what works/creative strategy/Napolean's glance at work (Google, Starbucks, Apple, etc) but all the business examples are about entrepreneurship, not solving the typical strategic problems that most business people face e.g. how should we position our new brand, stop a competitor from entering our market, etc. It's great to see just how much serendipity and intuition played a role in creating Google but how does that help me figure out what to do with the problem on my desk?Bringing this back to the positive, Duggan's main messages are really good and are often overlooked or ignored in business:- Hope is not a strategy. If you can't see a way to get where you'd like to go, you're probably better served trying to go somewhere else. (Although I think Mintzberg develops this idea with much more richness and rigor in his work on emergent strategy. See his Strategy Safari for a much wider discussion on how businesses create strategies.)- Drowning yourself in analysis of your problem probably isn't going to help you solve it. Analysis doesn't produce ideas.- Look around you! Use analogies, steal ideas shamelessly, research what's been done before both inside and outside your company. (If you like this idea, look up Gavetti and Rivkin's HBR paper called "How Strategist's Really Think.")- Don't expect ideas to come to you on cue. The expectation that your hour or day long brainstorm will produce the breakthrough idea is pretty laughable when you think about it. But, all too often, that's what we do.The net net: if you haven't yet read any of Duggan's books, this is a fine one to read (although I think Strategic Intuition: The Creative Spark in Human Achievement was slightly better) but if you've read any of the others, feel free to skip.

The whole concept makes so much sense. It clarifies the why and provides a practical path to the how. A process for personal, team or institutional use - one that mirrors how the brain works ...

Very good! The last few sections reviewing the competing concepts are not as helpful.

Traditional methods of strategy show you how to analyse your strategic situation, but do not give you the next step, which is how to get a creative idea for what to do, according to William Duggan in this book. The typical two-step strategy creation process involves firstly strategic research and analysis, and secondly brainstorming a solution. However, a brainstorming approach relies on information already in the participants' heads, and usually results in a weak solution. The author's Creative Strategy approach provides a deceptively simple three-phase approach to coming up with an innovation:* Phase 1 involves breaking a problem down into its element parts* Phase 2 involves scanning sources to find precedents that fit each element* Phase 3 involves combining a subset of those precedents to solve a problemThus the Creative Strategy approach spends less time and resources on initial strategic analysis, and a lot more time and resources on investigating what other firms, industries and cultures are doing, in order to discover precedents which could be imported as components of an entirely new strategy. The strongest strategies are devised through a process of external research and combination, rather than through a process confined to internal reflection. So, does it work? In my opinion, the author makes out quite a persuasive case, and his method provides a convincing explanation for the scientific process behind many innovations which would otherwise be explained away as unrepeatable "flashes of inspiration". He explains how the Creative Strategy process can be applied to a range of different types of innovation problems including: creating a new product, service or function; creating new business models; entrepreneurial innovation; social enterprise; and personal strategy. I recommend this book for anyone involved in business or non-profit strategy planning.

I really liked being exposed to non-Greek or Norse gods, as those pantheons seem to be the only ones anyone ever writes about anymore. Which is surprising, especially when those stories are for kids, because Greek and especially Norse gods were kind of… jerks. Awful jerks. But the forgotten gods in this other world were from a bunch of different cultures:Ayiyi, a spider trickster god from Ghana.Gu, the Fon (Benin and Togo) god of iron and war.Priparchis, the Baltic (Lithuania, Latvia, and Prussia) god of piglets. And so on!Yes, I had to look them up to determine where they were from. To be super honest, I thought Priparchis would be Roman, but I’m glad he’s not! There are so many amazing unknown pantheons out there. I’d love to see them more often!Besides exposure to fresh gods, this book was fun from the get-go. I read it without having read Book #1 in the series, and I could still totally track what was happening. It's a great story kids will love!

Super Cool Tech: Technology, Invention, Innovation, by DK

From School Library Journal

Gr 4 Up—From the cover that opens like a snazzy silver laptop to the detailed images of the inner workings of this decade's hottest technological innovations, this title will capture the attention of a range of readers. Younger readers might linger over the images of the inner layers of the Apple Watch, while middle grade readers may consider engineering careers that will allow them to tinker with technology. With the current focus on innovative and student-driven learning, this book serves as a launching point into deeper research. Those seeking in-depth descriptions of how inventions are developed or produced should look elsewhere, but readers in search of everything cool in technology will definitely want to interact with this colorful, engaging text. The cover does present an issue, as the binding is a bit flimsy, with hinging on the top and bottom and only a thin tape binding in between the covers. VERDICT School and public libraries should consider this resource as a browsable purchase but might need to add binding support.—Sarah Knutson, American Canyon Middle School, CA

Doesn’t look like a laptop or tablet but pretty close. My 8 year old devoured it in 2 days and now recites facts and stats from this book to me all the time.

My son saw this book at his school book fair (at list price), and fell in love. He thought it was awesome. He is 10, and I wondered if the interest would spread past the planes and aircraft. But, it did and he loves reading about the new tech.

Very impressive book! Our family enjoyed reading this book and talking about our future technology! Love the cover too. Would make a nice coffee table book. Especially nice for a game room or media room!

I bought it for my school's library as the students love this type of book. It was well received.

Adorable book. Looks like a computer but just a book. Have fun.

A great book! My 5-year son couldn't put it down when he received it.

DK publishing is always a reliable source of gorgeous visual design, great info, and fun reading. Bravo.

Everything I wanted in perfect condition.

Wow, this is an impressive book on Hadoop. The content is rich and comprehensive. Normally, I'd expect to read 3-4 books to cover the same amount of material. It reads well and the chapters are methodically laid out. Kudos to the authors for crafting such a well written book.

I bought this book because it was the only one that I could find that touched on data modeling in hadoop. Most of the materials I've read on hadoop focus solely ok the tooling and give little if any advice on how to structure your data - when to denormalize, when not to and what to do about those expensive joins. This book touched on that although I would have preferred that not being in chapter 9. So far a good read, I've not finished the book but I love the fact that they give rationale for using specific tools for specific jobs.

This book was exactly what I needed: Well-organized, easy to find what I need when "emergency" questions are arising, but also thorough enough to give me a decent start on the path to actually understanding not just WHAT to do, but WHY to do it like "this" instead of "that."

Well written guide that distinguishes how deep you are involved, enhances your insight whatever the emtry level in Hadoop was. Some of the suggestions on tools are getting already outdated with time running since book release, but basics still hold true.

a really good book to advance career in Big Data systems.

This book is great for getting your bearings with respect to the major functions of Hadoop, and the components that serve those functions. The examples are well thought-out and subtleties are pointed out and discussed.

Very much satisfied with the quality of the product.

Hi,I have written a detailed chapter-by-chapter review of this book on[...], the first and last parts of this review are given here. For my review of all chapters, search i-programmer DOT info for STIRK together with the book's title. This book aims to provide best practices and example architectures for Hadoop technologists, how does it fare? This book is written for developers and architects that are already familiar with Hadoop, who wish to learn some of the current best practices, example architectures and complete implementations. It assumes some existing knowledge of Hadoop and its components (e.g. Flume, HBase, Pig, and Hive). Book references are provided for those needing topic refreshers. Additionally, it’s assumed you are familiar with Java programming, SQL and relational databases. It consists of two sections, the first of which has seven chapters and looks at factors that influence application architectures. The second consists of three chapters, each providing a complete end-to-end case study.Below is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.Section I Architectural Considerations for Hadoop ApplicationsChapter 1 Data Modeling in HadoopThe chapter opens with a look at storage considerations. Various file types are discussed, and the importance of spilltable compressed data highlighted. Avro and Parquet are generally the preferred file formats for row and columnar based storage respectively. The chapter continues with at look at factors to consider when storing data in HDFS. Directory structures are recommended (e.g. /users/). If you know what tools you intend to use to process the data (e.g. Hive), you can take advantage of partitioning – reduces IO, bucketing – improves performance of joins, and denormailization – eliminates the need for joining data.Factors to consider when storing data in HBase are discussed next. HBase is a NoSQL database, often thought of as a huge distributed hash table. This key-value store is optimized for fast lookups, and is especially suitable for problems having relatively few get and put requests. HBase tables can have millions of columns and billions of rows. Important considerations for choosing the row key are discussed. Other aspects of HBase covered include: use of timestamps, hops, tables and regions, and the use of column families. The chapter ends with a look at metadata, describing what metadata is, and why it’s important. The importance of the Hive metastore and its reuse by other tools is discussed. This chapter provides a useful discussion of features to consider in data modeling. Some sections seem wordy, but probably need to be so. Some useful recommendations are given (e.g. use the Avro file format), together supporting reasons. From its start, it’s clear this is not a book for beginners. The chapter is well written, has useful explanations, discussions, diagrams, references, links to other chapters, and considered recommendations. A useful chapter conclusion is provided. These features apply to the whole book....ConclusionThis book aims to provide Hadoop current best practices, example architectures and complete implementations – and succeeds in each area. The book is well written, providing good explanations, examples, walkthroughs, and diagrams. Useful links are given between chapters, and there’s a valuable conclusion at the end of each chapter. The order of the chapters is helpful in understanding the flow of topics. This is not a book for beginners, but does contain useful references to books to get you up to speed. In many ways, this book follows on naturally from “Hadoop: The Definitive Guide”, which I recently reviewed. It provides practical discussions of the many factors to consider when presented with common Hadoop architectural concerns (e.g. whether to use HDFS or HBase?). The book offers recommendations, and provides supporting information that backs these up.The book doesn’t cover all Hadoop technologies (e.g. it omits Machine Learning), but it does cover many popular ones. Some of the books referenced are getting old and some chapters have footnotes at the end, which would be better placed on the pages where they are referenced.Hadoop is changing rapidly, this book suggests the near future will see a decline in MapReduce processing, and a rise in processing using Spark. Similarly, at the higher-level of abstraction, SQL in its various flavours also appears to be in ascendancy. If you want to know the current state of Hadoop and its components, want a practical discussion of the pros and cons for using various tools, and want solutions to common problems, I can highly recommend this book.
