Perhaps the book would have been better if focused on a single culture. As it is, the analysis of so few words leads to plausible conclusions, but not probable conclusions. Overall I thought it was fine until I showed the book to a Russian native and she told me the word use and translation was archaic.

I read this and used this book over a decade ago, but it got lost-in-the-exhaust of moving around the country. I am delighted it is available here. As a bona fide linguist, I view this work as a practical exposition of pragmattics, register, and as a springboard for further anthropological linguistic study. I just got this book and I absoluty LOVE IT!!! it is bigger than I thought and the quality is AMAZING., the drawings inside are really well made and the pages are really strong and sturdy. love the story behind it and I cannot wait to read it to my 4 year old. He is such a Washington Capitals fan. All his life is about hockey and about Oshie and Ovie. He is having a 4th bday party and of course his theme is hockey. He is not a good sleeper, I am hopeing this book will help him go to sleep in a good mood and relaxed after reading a story about his passion and looking at these amazing illustrations and really vibrant colors.I didn't know it was a sports illustrated book. I am really pleased. The story is about hochey of course but kids can relate to it. They can picture themselves excited about their team winning. It shows the meaning of sports and team supportive fan.I recommend this book to all hockey fans.... ages 4 and up. The story is really well told and easy for the kids to follow.will be a really good addition to kids library.

My 4 yr old son is all about hockey these days but it's hard to find hockey books to read before bed overnight. We found 'Z Is for Zamboni: A Hockey Alphabet' by Matt Napier which he loves but after reading it almost 100 times, we needed to broaden our selection of hockey books. Luckily I found this gem of a book by Michael Dahl. It's a quick read which is great but fun and colorful. The story flows like the words of a poem and it's illustrations are top notch. My son and his parents love this book.

I bought this book for 3 year old twins and they love it! The pictures are very colorful and the story is cute!

My 2 year old grandson is obsessed with hockey. Everything is a stick or a puck. I have purchased 3 of these so he could have it at home and his grandparents houses. He sleeps with it and asks to read it all the time. He will even quote lines from the book. Loves to tell us that he is going to bed to have his hockey dream. The hockey rhymes and pictures make it very entertaining for little ones.

Cute book, perfect for our 3 year old who loves hockey. We initially were reading this book on the kindle through prime reading for free. We read it so many times I decided it’d be nice to have a real copy.

Very well written and pictures are well illustrated. I purchased this as an intro to the sport, for a toddler who will be learning more about hockey before he goes to his first game as a little spectator, I also bought a Franklin hockey net that game with 2 toddler sized sticks and soft balls to further interest him in the game.

For any young (3-5 years old) hockey lover. Short story with great pictures.

Beautifully illustrated, nice book. This is such a great gift for your little hockey lover. My only gripe is the pages somehow didn't come cut all the way (as in some pages were connected at the top). This was easily fixed with scissors but I probably wouldn't have gifted it to anyone other than my son because its not totally uniform.

There is a deep need for our children to be brought up immersed in the Word, and this book will be a great resource for parents seeking to raise their children up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). I am personally thankful to have this tool as I pursue my aim of becoming a Proverbs 4 dad!Though this book says it is written for ages 9 and up, it is by no means childish. To be perfectly honest, most adults could stand to learn much from this book! This book teaches exactly that through small daily studies.My wife and I have been using this book in our family devotions with my six year-old son. He "gets it." As a suggestion, we have broken up the daily studies into two. One to introduce the topic and the second day to reinforce it. We also briefly review the previously taught topics to keep them in memory.I would disagree with the reviewer and commenter who said it was too deep. Our culture has come to assume that anything with any depth is too deep for kids. With my son, I read the book straight through and change only have to modify a few words here and there to make it a little more understandable.I won't go into too much detail as the book has been covered here. We have several family devotionals, many good, a few not so good. This one is my favorite. As the book suggests, it could be used in homeschool, in a Christian school or even in a church setting. This book could also be used as an adult theological primer, which would be very valuable for new believers. But for its designed purpose, this book is a great way to teach your kids how great our God is!

Others can sell you on the merits of the contents (Battletech is an incredibly fun game), but I just wanted to say that the book itself (I have a 2018 printing with a blue cover, the current logo, and an Atlas on it) fell about 14 inches and in the process a binding hinge split wide open and the spine plate developed a big crack.It's got a heavy (clay-coated glossy paper) page block and a very weak binding. That's an awful combination.I'm a lifelong collector and book dealer as well as a former employee of a major New York publishing house and currently an academic librarian, and all I can say is I'm insulted to have paid $40 for this hardcover. It literally split in half after falling off a coffee table.

I ordered this book expecting it was going to be the one pictured in the item description, but unfortunately it is the newer 2018 print. The first one they sent me was damaged and the replacement is just barely holding together together. Even after verifying with Amazon that the replacement would be the one in the photo, they still sent me the newer print.Quality aside, no complaints on the rules/content, however, Catalyst needs to correct the quality issues for their next run. A $40 rulebook should not fall apart after opening it for the first time.

Short point: If you're out to crash giant robots into each other and no more, this book isn't for you. Stick to the basic CBT starter set and be happy.Long point: If, on the other hand, you realize that the average war isn't solely dependent on giant robots for the win, this is the right book for you. Having been a BT4 player since just after 2000 (I've had pages fall out of my copies of BT Master Rules and Maximum Tech, they are so heavily used), it is good to see a nice chunk of L1, L2 and L3 Battletech codified and compiled into one easy reference. It is a big book, and for some things you will have to hunt and read until you memorize it, but for the one-stop slaughterhouse in the Inner Sphere and Clan territories, this is well worth the sticker price. The authors even went so far as to chop up Aerotech and throw in the ground support system for good measure.The downsides: Artillery is not covered in this volume. The space battle section of the Aerotech coverage only goes as far as Dropships, leaving Jumpships and Warships out entirely. The largest downside is simple: this is only the play rules. If you want to build your own units (one of the great hallmarks of Battletech), you will need the sister volume CBT Techmanual (Classic Battletech).Rating Justification: Four out of five stars is well worth it, simply because they compacted and simplified a very large amount of BT4 into one play-oriented volume. It would have been nice to have the full spectrum of combat in one volume (Arty, space naval engagements, odds and ends not included here), but it is also logical that such concerns be handled in a more strategic setting (hence the third book, CBT Tactical Operations (Classic Battletech)).Have a nice day.

I have purchased a number of Catalyst published CBT supplements in the past few months and, with one minor exception, I am consistently amazed with the quality of the products they are currently producing.My history with Battletech goes back to about 1990 or 1991; my personal collection of older sourcebooks is fairly extensive, including the second and fourth edition boxed sets, every version of the Battletech Compendium, and a few copies of the BMR.This is without a doubt the best supplement of it's kind ever released for Battletech. It simply destroys the previous products in terms of presentation, cohesiveness and overall clarity.Due to my long term history with the game, I found it incredibly interesting to see how various rules had evolved. In almost every case it seemed that any vagaries or holes had been worked out. Items that created imbalances have been corrected in minor ways (i.e. pulse lasers + aimed shots on targeting computers) items that were woefully underpowered have been made more useful or sturdier (AMS and infantry units I'm looking at you.)Additionally this book consolidates a number of rule sets into a single volume; no more referencing separate volumes for City and non-City combat, or Aerospace stuff, etc. This means you can, in almost every case, have a single point of reference while running a BattleTech game. This is pretty invaluable when compared to the old way of swapping through rulebooks for case by case items within a scenario.There are a few points of critique I can level at the product. Unit creation rules have been moved to a separate volume; this is acceptable due to the complexity of the rules in their consolidated state. That being said, the little things they did to "force" one to buy TechManual (i.e. leaving weight and crit slots off of the weapon tables, which historically have always been included) were a bit shady. Especially since TechManual's tables do not display combat stats as well as Total Warfare's, leaving me with no single viable table to use for all the data I'd need.It seems like the rules for Artillery and similar items have been left out of this product and were moved into I believe Strategic Operations. That does make sense based on the scales involved, but as an old hat I'm used to having those in the "Compendium" type products.All in all this is a wonderful sourcebook, I really have to give it to the guys at Catalyst; it's rare to see companies honor tradition, while improving on the older products.

My book seems to be damaged. The spine is coming off from the cover. I think I can fix it with super glue down the spine but wanted to give you a heads up.

This impressive hard-cover book is not only a manual that you will love owner while you playing the game, but it has the quality, printing and pictures of a very high grade encyclopedia. While other reviewers may note that it may not be the book the start the game play with, you will be looking for this book within a week or two of when you start. The only two downsides are (1) the book is limited and becoming harder to find, and (2) I wish the manufacturer would print more of these books for the older games as well

This book is a 'must' purchase if you're going to be playing Battletech. It's the ultimate resource to the rules needed to play competitively, and provides clear guidance where previous editions of the rules were a bit more open to interpretation.

Involved in two collisions where I had the opportunity to put the strategies presented in this book to work. On both occasions, the process worked well up until the negotiations. Needless to say, I had to hire attorneys for both collisions and to file civil suits.

I highly recommend this book!I sustained injuries in a car accident. I had no knowledge or experience dealing with insurance claims. I was concerned about dealing with the insurance adjuster, feeling like an amateur competing against a seasoned professional.I bought this book a few weeks after the accident. It was EXTREMELY helpful in understanding the "system" - general background, role of each player, process, typical timeline, examples, suggestions of "good ideas vs bad ideas," etc. This book pointed out a number of traps to avoid and saved me from just going along with what SEEMED like reasonable suggestions from the insurance adjuster. After 3 months, I hired an attorney, realizing from this book that I could not handle the situation on my own.My only regret is that I did not find this book the day after the accident. It would have saved me some sleepless nights.

This book was ok. However, it was so vague that if you have anything other than a minor car accident, this book is not worth it. My wife was involved in a major car accident and we were looking for advice on reaching a fair and honest appraisal of damages for injury. This did not help us value what a good settlement is. So, for anything complex, the book basically is worthless.

I was really glad to get this book shortly after I was in an accident. It gave me a really good picture of a personal injury claim: what it is (and is not), what would be a fair amount to expect for my injuries, and how to communicate with the insurance company. Actually, I wish I'd had it to review BEFORE my first phone conversations with the insurance company, as it gives some good advice for those crucial first conversations.

I was rear-ended in 2010 just 18 days after I purchased a brand new car. This car immediately lost its value and I was injured in the crash. I could have hired an attorney to settle my claim, but I first wanted to see what it might be worth and how the system worked. This book was extremely helpful. I was able to successfully resolve the property damage claim for a reasonable amount and the bodily injury claim as well all without hiring an attorney. The book has a lot of good advice and sample letters to assist in writing claims and what to do to negotiate or further pursue the claim after the first few settlement offers. This book, along with a lot of patience, was very helpful in my settling my own claim. I'm very glad I purchased it.

this was a magnificent book. the reason i gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it is NOT a history of the wars of the roses. it only covers the period of lancaster vs york. however, it covered this in a complete manner, going back to the roots of the war during the reign of richard ii (many books start much later. you lose some of the causes and influences that way. good for red roses, bad for white roses). who, how, why he was disposed of his rule and who took the kingship is crucial to understanding the later claims of york over lancaster.add-in note - i was just reading another book that started in 1420. when it got to a clash between gloucester and a beaufort, there was a quick note about who they were, but not nearly enough context to understand it, unless you know the subjet well already.. with this book, you have the context the understand who the bueaforts are and why they are reallllly important, as well why there would be contention around them. --- end notethe author concentrates on the people and their motivations, rather than just the mind-numbing actions. the corruption of the councils during the two minority kingships, the struggles of the power groups, the influence of france and burgundy, the reform movements that failed due to queen margaret, etc. one ends up knowing the main flow of events and why things occured as they did.ps - you need to print out the genealogy charts. you can't keep track of the players and their interrelationships without a score card. her charts have been simplified over most charts one sees, so that you can see what's going on easily.

One of the best history books I've read in a while, and I read a lot! The author hit the perfect balance of content with readability. Doesn't get too bogged down in detail yet covers all the bases. The subject can be a very confusing one, with all the various names and Titles becoming tedious at times. But Weir handles this beautifully and I rarely found myself having to go back and re-read a portion like I do with other books on this period. Excellent background story on King Richard II and the lead up to the wars. I can't believe how much great detail on the character's lives she was able to include. She makes the connection between characters. She seemed to answer every question I could have thought to ask. What was the motivation of these people? What in their background made them this way? She avoids the overly academic dull prose and gets straight to the point. She avoids the impulse of many history writers to write mainly to impress their peers. Instead it is beautifully written, flows along in a logical manner, and makes for a book even non-history buffs might want to read. My only complaint is that the book ends with the reign of Edward IV and we don't get to hear more about Richard III, because I bet she would do a wonderful job with that as well.

While I'd always been aware of the so-called Wars of the Roses in British history (I knew it was the Yorks and the Lancasters and it finally ended for good when the two houses intermarried and formed the House of Tudor), it doesn't tend to be taught in American schools. Which is why it's perfect that Alison Weir has a whole book just about that period in English history: The Wars of the Roses.It's a confusing story, to be sure: it seems like virtually every man in it is named Edward, Richard, or Henry, and they're all related to each other, besides. But Weir does her best to distinguish each of them, and she traces the conflicts not just from the point that they formally began, but from the point where they are rooted. The fighting doesn't get started until about halfway through, but it would be well nigh impossible to understand without all the preamble. She sets her stage carefully, and, much to my relief, when the fighting begins, it doesn't turn into a straight blow-by-blow battle narrative. I find descriptions of war maneuvers to be boring beyond measure, but Weir tells us enough to give us a sense of the battles but not make us feel like we're sitting through a military history lecture.As always in Weir's work, it's well-sourced (she uses sources contemporary to the events being described, and traces language use back to ensure that she's giving the proper context to what was being reported) and well-written, with a definite sense of narrative and not just fact-dumping. One minor quibble, though, with this book is that it doesn't quite see the Wars through to what I thought to be their end: the ascension of Henry VII and his marriage to Princess Elizabeth of York. While I was hoping to get a bit more information about the end stages of the Wars, I definitely enjoyed getting Weir's take on the period she covered, and would recommend the book to others curious about this period of English history.

Finally, a book that makes sense of the Wars of the Roses! Turns out that the whole thing - that convulsed England, Wales, and Scotland for decades - was about the macho pride of about 70 people, the very high nobility. Weir does everyone a favor by giving genealogical charts of the major families involved; I bookmarked them on my Kindle, because it was helpful to refer to them often. Part of the problem, of course, is that one person could be known by 1) his real name, 2) as Duke Somethingorother, 3) as Count Somethingelse, or as Bishop/Archbishop Evensomethingdifferent. One more table giving all the different names borne by an individual, would have been very helpful. Otherwise, the writing is clear, even vivid, and the author sets the motivations of the various characters firmly in context, giving some sense to what at first glance can be an impenetrable thicket of battles, plots, and treachery. Good book, well worth a read. This book covers only the first half of the wars and the Yorkist high point; now I need to go get the author's book on the second half, which covers the eventual triumph of the Lancastrians in the person of Henry VII (who was initially ignored by the Lancastrians - what a mess!)
