In a much publicized debate between Bill Nye the Science guy and Ken Ham of Answers in Genesis, a common retort was made by the non-Christian position that the Bible had been translated hundreds of times over the last three millennia before it ever made it into American English. The implication was clear—the transmission and translation process of the Bible is much akin to the children’s’ game telephone. Is this true? Paul D. Wegner, professor of Old Testament at Phoenix Seminary, has written an excellent and thorough text on the history of the Bible. With a keen eye to history and a wealth of knowledge concerning the various manuscripts, Dr. Wegner highlights the flaccidity of the charge against the Bible.The book is divided into five parts: preliminary matters regarding the Bible, canonization of the Bible, transmission of the Bible, early translations of the Bible, and English translations of the Bible. Section one discusses various preliminary issues concerning the creation and nature of the Bible. What is the Bible? What is the relationship between the two covenants? How does the synoptic problem affect interpretation? These questions and more are answered in a systematic and holistic fashion. Part two shows the development of the canon within the inner-workings of the early church. By the time of Jesus, an established Old Testament canon existed and the new functioned soon after the death of the apostles. Heresy, persecution, missionary usage and other factors drove the early church into recognizing and codifying a New Testament canon.The third portion of the book spent considerable time discussing the transmission of the Bible. Where did the Greek and Hebrew texts come from and how reliable are they? What manuscripts do we have and what are their dates? What communities developed the text and for what purpose were they created? After offering a lengthy dialogue on each testament, the other shows the value of translations of the Bible in different languages. The author also offers broad principles relating to textual criticism. Part four is the shortest division within the book and seeks to educate the reader about other translations floating around the Roman world in the centuries following the time of the apostles. The author gives special care to informing one of the historical context behind the early printing of the Bible. Because of the Renaissance and the invention of the printing press, the need for a Bible in English was apparent and almost inevitable. Gutenberg’s first book printed was Jerome’s Latin Vulgate which began the process of disseminating the Bible throughout the West.The last section of the book is on English translations of the Bible. The author breaks this section up into smaller subunits based upon the time period: English Bibles prior to 1611, modern English Bibles up to 1950, and modern translations from 1950. In light of the cultural and literary significance of the authorized version of the Bible, the writer devotes a whole chapter to its history and revisions. A special appendix is tacked onto the chapter discussing the unfortunate “KJV Only” debate in the Church today. The work closes answering the question of “Why are there so many English translations?”Dr. Wegner remarks, “The purpose of the book is to provide a general survey of how the Bible we use came to be in its present form.” In my opinion, the author met his goal and much more. Within the span of only four hundred pages, the author indeed offered a lot of valuable information about the Bibles we cherish in our churches today. The value of the book is threefold: education, defense, and encouragement. Wegner’s book obviously educates the average Christian sitting in the pew on how we got our Bibles. Because pastors are mainly focused on teaching and preaching from the text and not necessarily discussing its integrity and textual history, this book offers the laymen a plethora of arrows in their intellectual quiver. The section alone of the various modern translations is worth the price of the book. There are good reasons why some preach from one translation as opposed to another. The book also serves an apologetic purpose. Snide and clever witticisms about the text from disbelieving dissenters can be rebuffed with the knowledge gleaned from Wegner’s book. The transmission of the Bible is a more sophisticated, tedious, and careful process than any analogy from the telephone game can provide. Lastly, the book bolsters our confidence in the Bible. The author shows that great trouble was taken in the transmission and translation process in such a way that the average reader can be sure that the text is accurate and worthy of their spiritual studiousness.I perceived at least three important strengths of the book. First, the text is comprehensive in its scope. Almost no stone was left unturned. While more could be said on each and every subject mentioned, I did not feel the author short-changed the reader in any area. One can walk away with at least sufficient knowledge on these issues. Second, the book was both readable yet scholarly. The author did not write using unclear and difficult concepts without taking the time to explain and define the words. Many books of this caliber tend to go over the heads of the readers. This work avoided such a trap while remaining scholarly. Dr. Wegner wrote in his preface that “The discussions in this book are directed primarily toward the undergraduate student or layperson…” and remained true to form throughout. Last, the book contained many charts, maps, figures and graphs that further elucidated and extended the work’s intended aim. It is one thing to read a lengthy chapter about a manuscript. It is another thing to see the various manuscripts discussed. One walks away with a greater appreciation for the text by getting to see the manuscripts and textual variants within them. This allowed the author to include more information without having to stop the flow of his argument.There are not many apparent weaknesses I could perceive from the book. I do however think the work could have been strengthened with some extra chapters or appendixes on what the major confessions and creeds say about Scripture and also a chapter on the importance of the Bible in the Global South. Though the book was not mainly a theological treatise seeking to discuss such issues as the inerrancy, sufficiency, and perspicuity of Scripture, something brief on those topics might lend the book broader appeal in evangelicalism. Also, the shape of global Christianity has radically changed within the last century and a nod at how the Bible is valued and utilized in non-Western locales would greatly strengthen the book. How is the Bible used in those contexts? Is it different from our own? All in all, an author cannot say everything so should not be faulted for leaving out such things as long as he or she is comprehensive. From my perspective, there was no bias that hindered the author’s work. At times, the author in fact appeared to be neutral and objective as he described various debates surrounding the text. For example, when discussing the KJV Only debate, he merely gave the arguments without his position. The arguments can speak for themselves.I personally look forward to utilizing the information gleaned from this book in the local Church. There exists widespread ignorance on how we got our bibles and the science of textual criticism. Many times, Christians do not even care to learn about these topics until pushed by unbelievers in these specific areas. Educating our youth and others who sit in the pew can only encourage the faithful in their mission to the world. Without an adequate defense of Scripture, the Church’s message many times can and will be dismissed out of hand by the person we are evangelizing. Furthermore, Dr. Wegner’s “For Further Reading” portions after each chapter are an invaluable tool for lay-level apologists and seekers wanting more knowledge. I would and plan to recommend this book for anyone genuinely interested in the history of God’s Word.

I bought this for my dad who, at 70 y/o, is exploring the post-KJV translations. When it arrived, I spent more than an hour reading section 5 on the English translations and loved it. I do wish it were a bit more up-to-date to include information on the HCSB and the recent changes to the NIV following the change in publishers, but it was copyrighted in 1999 before those translations were released. It covers up to the NLT and The Message. Perhaps the paperback version has been updated.I have not spent much time on the beginning of this book (I don't want to give dad an overly used gift) and I don't know what "doctrinal polemics" are, but I suspect that's a bit more than my dad would be looking for. I will say that we (Dad and I) agree with the doctrine to which Moody Bible Institute (the school at which the author teaches) adheres.I'm glad I found a copy that fit my budget to go along with the parallel Bible I bought Dad. I would definitely recommend this to a friend. Just remember it's age (shouldn't affect the main portion of the book) and if you're sensitive to viewpoints other than your own, be aware of the author's background.

Had been searching for just such a book. Not difficult reading for college level. Very good section on the Apocrypha, with lists and charts. I LOVE lists! Even lists the reasons why the various apocryphal writings were not accepted as canon by most. This is a great book. I was looking for a book as an "Honors" extra, to read for The Theology Program at [...]. This is an easy and exciting book to read that follows right along with our 10 week semester on Bibliology and Hermeneutics. It has provided extra insight for understanding and discussion of "How do we know that we have the right Bible? How can my 1988 NIV Bible be the same as 400 BC Old Testament? 100 AD New Testament? I had little knowledge of this subject before this semester and this book was very helpful, yet not "Over my head."

Bookbinding has a bend on it.Haven’t read through it yet, but my first impression is that there isn.t as much information as I was hoping for. Some of the artwork, I can confirm, already appears in the main art book for spider verse. The hard cover is nice., but wish there was more content considering the price to get it.

The product came in apparently crisp and new condition. The sort where you feel it resisting you opening the cover even 90 degrees because it hasn't been opened since being assembled. However, the pages around the top and bottom are a bit wavey as if water damaged. Less that it was splashed with water, and more that it was in some very humid enviornment. I do not know if this is a product of their printing process, where it was stored, or the weather it was transported in. However, the end result is a visually and physicialy perceptible wavey texture that makes the book feel a bit less good.Update: I haven't been using the book much (busy, not due to lack of interest) but I have noticed that the wavey texture has diminished some in the few weeks I have owned it. It is still a bit wavey, but it seems that letting the book rest closed in a good enviornment with just a bit of weight on the cover helps treat it.

Good, but not as good as I think.1, printing quality can be better,2, thinner than i ecpect.

This book is a pretty short read as it’s less than 100 pages, but despite that, this book feels like it’s well worth the price of $13 I spent on it as every page is packed full of great concept art, interviews, and insight into the making of the movie. This is basically a smaller more affordable version of the big art book they make, and as of now buying the full sized art book is a 3 month with because it’s so back ordered. This is a pretty good book to read while you wait for the full sized one or just as a cheaper alternative.

I'm not a photographer, but my brother-in-law has a fine art photography business, and I thought this would be an interesting read. The level of research done by the author is very thorough! The information is well laid out and easy to follow. I feel a lot of the advice in this book could be used for other types of artistry as well, including my jewelry design business. I think any artist is keen on getting their work seen by as many people as possible, and may contact every potential outlet without getting the result they want. Kara's point about researching what type of work each gallery represents, and aligning yourself with those that best fit with your aesthetic to be very valuable. In addition to creating the work, there's only so much time we can spend on marketing ourselves. I found her advice about researching galleries first and targeting the best potential match to be a great way to go about it. It's all about targeted marketing.

Myth officially debunked.I bought both the paperback and the Kindle version so I could easily reference it when traveling, but I also wanted a hard copy I could highlight and dog-ear. This is my new favorite reference book.It is also a great inspiration to get out of my comfort zone, try some of these approaches, build several bodies of work, and hopefully hang on the walls of the most beloved galleries.I will recommend it to all my photography guild friends.

It was disappointing. The book is 96 pages, all text. So it's short. That could have been a good thing had it not been both pedantic and wooden. She makes clear that she wrote this from research. However, it's lifeless. The examples are all at arm's length, and not at all engaging. She does provide a mechanical description of processes and relationships. Had any of them been engaging or compelling, the book would have a life it lacks. Therefore, it's rather overpriced.In addition, the softcover appears to be an inexpensive on-demand production. Within 24 hours the cover curled badly. So it won't be finding a place on my shelf because it can't.

The author is very helpful. I am in the process of following this path.

I have often been told I should be a professional photographer. I have listened halfheartedly to that compliment and smiled accordingly. However, after reading Kara Lane's book not once but twice, I may have renewed interest in making my photography more than an avocation and giving it a try.Kara's book provided a step-by-step, comprehensive overview of how to obtain gallery representation. Not only does it provide an overview, it is filled with specific references and recommendation. Too often, "anyone can do this" and "how to" books are filled with generalities and encouragement...lacking true substance. Kara Lane has given real references and insights from professionals.Read it and learn!!!

Featured Recipe from Ina Garten: Sticky Toffee Date Cake with Bourbon Glaze Makes 1 cake For the cake ¾ pound dates, pitted and chopped 1 teaspoon baking soda ¼ pound (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature ¹⁄³ cup granulated sugar 2 extra-large eggs, at room temperature 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1¼ cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1½ tablespoons baking powder For the sauce 12 tablespoons (1½ sticks) unsalted butter 1 cup light brown sugar, lightly packed ½ cup heavy cream ¼ teaspoon kosher salt 2 tablespoons good bourbon, such as Maker's Mark 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract Sweetened whipped cream, for serving Directions Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Butter and flour a 9 x 2-inch round cake pan. Place the dates in a deep saucepan with 1¾ cups of water. Bring to boil, stirring a little to break up the dates. Allow to simmer for 1 minute. Off the heat, stir in the baking soda (it will bubble up!). Set aside. Meanwhile, in an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the butter and granulated sugar on medium speed for 3 minutes, until light and fluffy. With the mixer on low, add the eggs, one at a time, and then the vanilla, scraping down the bowl. (The mixture may look curdled.) Combine the flour and salt and, with the mixer still on low, slowly add it to the batter. With the mixer on low, add the hot date mixture in two batches to the batter, scraping down the bowl. The batter will be runny but don't worry! Stir in the baking powder, which will also bubble up. Pour into the prepared pan. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Meanwhile, combine the butter, brown sugar, heavy cream, and salt in a medium saucepan and bring to boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 1 minute. Off the heat, stir in the bourbon and vanilla and pour into a 2-cup heat-proof glass measuring cup. Set aside. As soon as the cake is done, poke holes all over it with a toothpick. Pour three-quarters of the sauce evenly over the cake while still warm and allow it to soak in for 30 minutes. Turn the cake out bottom side up onto a flat serving plate and pour the remaining sauce on top. Cool completely. Serve at room temperature with sweetened whipped cream.

A fun-filled cookbook, packed with delicious recipes, and invaluable cooking tips. In addition, the author provides 150 colorful, stunning photos that aim to please. Ina Garten guides you through Foolproof plans to keep the food hot for serving, fabulous lunch and dinner recipes, tasty delights, and mouth-watering desserts. My favorite recipes are her lobster and potato salad, and her sensational brownies. However, there is a huge selection for dinners, cakes, sauce and more. She offers recipes on seafood, beef, salads, and yummy treats. Each recipe is simple, and easy-to-read. A wonderful gift idea for any cook. Highly Recommended!

I own all of Ina Garten's cookbooks. I am amazed by how simple she makes cooking seem and every year around Thanksgiving, I start sorting through her recipes and planning my Thanksgiving menu. She delivers top notch results without much fuss, and I think she is probably my favorite long time Food Network personality.Foolproof is a cookbook that seems to revolve around mistake proof entertaining. When Ina says "foolproof" she doesn't mean a recipe has only five ingredients or that it has only three steps. Ina means she has an ingredient list with easily obtainable ingredients and steps that appeal to your common sense so that you don't worry about whether the recipe will turn out. She tells you what to look for so that you know when each recipe is perfectly done.She lists ten foolproof tips for cooking. Other chapters include: cocktails; starters; lunch; dinner; vegetables; and desserts. She also gives you 12 foolproof tips for table settings with photographs which help you out if, like me, making a table setting look polished but simple is something you need a little help with. She finishes the book with a foolproof index of menus for special occasions which cross references with special dishes from all of her cookbooks.She does repeat foolproof recipes from her previous books such as her standard chicken stock, but the book is mostly comprised of new material. I have seen some complaints that some of her ingredients are just too much of a splurge. I like to look at her recipes from a couple of perspectives. She lives in the Hamptons, and ingredients such as lobster are a local, easy-to-obtain natural part of her repertoire. Also, these recipes seem to mostly have an emphasis on entertaining and many of us don't mind splurging a little for a special occasion. She typically will tell you where to source the occasional not so common ingredient such as truffle butter. I'm not certain why anyone would expect budget recipes out of someone who has never been known for them at any point in her career.This cookbook is the same sturdy hardback that the rest of her classic cookbooks are fashioned in. Her cookbook has wonderful photography and stays open with no help, a real perk if you like to actively cook or don't own a cookbook stand.I enjoy all of Ina's recipes but have always felt she has a rare gift to make vegetables shine. Her sweet potato puree is very simple to prepare but is full of nice nuances in flavor. I have been using her roasted carrot recipe for over a year now and am delighted to see that she has mixed it up with a recipe for braised carrots and parsnips.She presents a mashed chickpea recipe that is yummy. I will be serving up her chocolate chunk blondie recipe regularly (a neat twist on the chocolate chip cookie). The raspberry shortbread bars are buttery, flavor-filled, and exceptional. Expect food that you turn to when you want to make a delicious impression at a holiday dinner, special occasion, or because you love impressing friends and coworkers with yumminess.I think her cookbooks consistently get better and become more user friendly with each book. I am excited to test drive this book throughout the holiday season.

Ina is awesome! I collect all of her books and recipes. She is so much like me. Who wants to spend all that long time in the kitchen anymore and miss out on enjoying your friends and company you have over to eat, sit down and enjoy yourself! Get some of her others, any, you choose, I love them all!

The directions for a Foolproof Tenderloin Roast is wonderful and the suggested sauce for fresh basil parmesan mayonaise a revelation.I did add an oven thermometer to my shopping to be sure the oven was correct and it was.One person said , the sauce is delicious and I don't like basil! I can see many uses for the sauce ,as a dipping sauce .Most of my books come from Amazon.com and this one did...What is especially interesting is that the recipes are very good.with lots of skills and techniques Ina makes available to anyone.

This is a good book, especially if you like the Barefoot Contessa's unpretentious style, which I do. However, I wouldn't say it's her best book, since I have a few of her others. My favorites are Barefoot at Home and Barefoot Back to Basics. It's something I will use as a reference when I plan parties in the future, but not something I will use on a regular weekly basis.

My wife has been watching more and more of the Contessa on TV. I'm no fool, I ordered this for her for Christmas. She is still nose deep in it many times when she gets time to sit down. I compared this to other books by her, but this seemed more accessible to a normal homemaker. I got many points for this.
