And that is saying a lot.Outlive Your Life takes the reader on a tour of the first twelve chapters of the Acts of the Apostles in a way that perhaps only Max Lucado could pull off. It takes Dr. Luke's history of the first-century church and turns it into Dr. Lucado's prescription for the twenty-first-century church. He draws rich lessons from each stage of the church's first days--applying them to our day--in chapters with titles such as, "Let God Unshell You," "See the Need; Touch the Hurt," and "Pray First; Pray Most." He tells a parable of Father Benjamin, along with real-life accounts of Jose Ferreira and Bzuneh Talema. He brings Acts 2 into modern-day Guatemala and Acts 4 into present-day Turkey. But what to do with it was a question I did not know what to do with. As I read further, Max gave the answer for me. Lucado shows us that we can not change ourselves without the help of God. And, he shows you that we as individuals can not help everyone, but when we as human beings come together we can accomplish a whole lot more. We all have gifts, talents, abilities, and resources that vary greatly. We need to learn how to come together and use all we are and have as individuals to help each other help others. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone. Pastors it is a great Bible Study.

I loved this book and read it quickly. It infuses scripture, and biblical stories with 'modern' interpretations. There are many suggestions for living our daily lives according to what Christ commissioned his disciples to do. Highly recommended if you want to make the world a better place by making small changes in your interactions with those that were created in God's image.

Great inspirational book. As always Max Lucado writes stuff that makes everyone feel good about themselves and where they are going. He writes so that everyone can understand. Mr. Lucado is never so "theological" or "trendy" with his terminology. If you have questions about how to be a good person; how to treat your fellow man, or how to become and stay a good Christian, and how to get to heaven; read any Max Lucado book.

I have read just about everything Max Lucado has ever written and, as usual, was not disappointed. If you have ever been 'down and out', homeless or helpless or if you have ever helped and showed compassion to those that were, this is the book for you. What does Christ think about helping one another? Then----what do YOU think about stepping out of your comfort zone and helping someone that maybe doesn't smell good or act properly? Working with homeless and hopeless folks is not for everyone, but praying for them is. Read this book and then give yourself a 'compassion' test.

Mr. Lucado gave so many examples of how ordinary people have a lot of power to make a difference in our world; even children can make a big difference.Was Mother Teresa created to prove that you can do something today that will outlive your life? It's probably harder to write a short scary story than another kind because once the arc is set, how do you deliver a surprise? A swimmer determined to take a dip in a place she shouldn't, a bedroom full of nasty toys that unstitch each other, yet another stuffed toy that smells so much like a deceased, hated husband . . . there isn't much room once such premises have been laid down to do anything but unfurl details that can't stray far from the starting points. Of the stories in this collection, none is particularly scary, none is distinguished enough to merit hardcover publication (with or without Stephen King's name as editor). The first is a little creepy in a way that Robert Aickman's work was creepy, but lacking Aickman's depth of characterization and cleverness. One is passingly amusing as a satire. Several are well written. But this is a very thin collection that could have fit comfortably into half its space. Finally, did each of the six contributors have to write a preface declaring their admiration for Stephen King? Isn't anyone embarrassed by this kind of thing?

When any author attaches their name to anything, their fans take notice. When Stephen King attached his name to Six Scary Stories, he was making a statement to potential buyers: these stories are scary. They aren't. There may be elements that are disturbing, thrilling, or bizarre, but with the exception of the first tale (which wasn't all that scary either), I would say these are just six stories masquerading as scary.I'll agree with Stephen King on one thing: of these six stories, the winner was the most entertaining of the bunch. The other five, whittled down from a contest pool of eight hundred, are all over the place. Most are forgettable, the lone exception being La Morte De L’Amant, a tale I found exciting, but never horrifying.

I was very excited to read stories that Stephen King deemed good enough to be in this book. Wild Swimming, Eau-De-Eric and The Bear Trap were my favorites. There are no jump out at you scary stories but they are all creepy in their own way. This is definitely worth reading but it is pretty short. I read the book in around 45 minutes.

Stephen King should leave reviewing other authors stories to someone else. I read this book from cover to cover in an hour. It's called Six Scary Stories. It should have been called Six Stupid Stories. They were all boring and predictable. I won't be passing the book along to friends who like Stephen King, because, well, for one thing it's not written by Stephen King, and two, I wouldn't do that to my friends. This is nowhere near Stephen King caliber. I will give it to the thrift store, but I feel sorry for whoever waste's their money on it. I've never been so disappointed in a book in my life.

Elodie Harper’s “Wild Swimming” takes place in Lithuania, where a swimmer wants to explore a local lake. There’s an old village buried underneath it, and her hostess insists swimming there would show disrespect–but of course the woman doesn’t listen.Manuela Saragosa’s “Eau-de-Eric” is one of my favorites in this volume. Kathy’s husband Eric is dead, but her little girl Ellie just found a teddy bear that smells of his aftershave. Kathy doesn’t want the reminder of her dead husband, but Ellie’s determined to keep hold of the bear. There’s a fantastic sense of inevitability to this one, and Kathy has a surprising amount of depth to her given the short length of the story.In “The Spots,” by Paul Bassett Davies, a man is set to the task of counting a leopard’s spots by his country’s great Leader. The depiction of this Leader in the little details that emerge is both whimsical and dark.Michael Button’s “The Unpicking” sees a bunch of kids’ toys trying to figure out what game to play while their child sleeps. This is another favorite, as it has whispers of Ligotti’s fascination with puppets and marionettes in it.Stuart Johnstone’s “La Mort de L’Amant” shows us a man looking out off of a bridge, and a police officer who comes to make sure he’s okay. I found the ending of this one a bit too abrupt, but it was otherwise quite good.Finally, Neil Hudson’s “The Bear Trap” presents Calvin, a boy who’s weathering the end of the world at his prepper father’s house. He and his teddy bears are none too happy when a stranger comes looking to take whatever he can get.I’m not including much detail, as it’s easy to ruin the fun in short horror stories. I’ll just say that these are delightful little nuggets, and for the most part I found them all quite satisfying.

Some people feel overwhelmed when seeing books with more than 300 pages. For those readers who like horror, this book is for you. It is a collection of six different authors that were selected via a contest. Stephen King will tell you about it in the forward. I am reluctant to buy this type of book, but am glad I did. The reads were quick and well written. Before each story, there is information about the author, as well as comments by author regarding Stephen King. Enjoy!

I was very happy that I decided to give this book a try! This is about a girl who wants to be herself, and do something to end the helpless feeling about not having any control over her own life. The synopsis was intriguing, but the story itself is even more adventurous, and I realized that I did not want to put it down!Here’s why the book was amazing:- The character development. For me, being able to appreciate the main characters and actually want to learn more about them, can top almost any other aspect. Harriet is an incredible character who experiences some profound moments that shape her into a much smarter and more considerate person. I thought that the author did a beautiful job of laying out this transition. The other characters were also very compelling, and made for some interesting revelations. A few of the side-characters also grew as their experiences progressed, and not everyone turned out for the better. I was very appreciative of these developments, as it made me feel like I knew them a little more.- The familiar yet unique plot. So I recognized a few familiar storylines embedded within this one. The most notable would be undertones of Pride and Prejudice, and essentially any book or movie about a girl disguising herself as a boy in order to feel the associated freedoms with that gender. When it comes to the former, I can pinpoint numerous references to the scenes in the classic Jane Austen novel, and even establish a significant amount of comparisons between the personalities of the side-characters. This makes the book sound a bit like a crummy retelling, or a poorly executed copycat. Rest assured, it is neither of those things! Somehow, despite the similarities to other stories, this one remains truely unique and captivating with its own twists and dynamics!- The quippy humor. Most of this book was inspirational, adventurous and romantic. On top of that, I love how intelligent the main character is, because I got to enjoy some of her quick-thinking insults and banter!- the plot/storyline. This book starts off a bit slow when it comes to adventure. The first part of the story follows the main character’s day-to-day mundane responsibilities, which might seem dull, but I actually found this part incredibly enjoyable! We get a pretty decent look into her relationships with her family and friends, and this introductory base of information makes these relationships seem even sweeter as we see how they grow.If there’s one flaw to this story, I’d say it’s one tiny aspect of the ending. I promise it’s not technically a cliffhanger, but I do wish we had been given a bit more information. All plot components were accounted for and tied up, but I just felt like I could have used an epilogue for that satisfied solid ending feel. I get that not all books need to have that, so I’m probably just being selfish. Either way, I think this is a 5-Star book!Some other points to mention: there’s very mild if any language, nothing graphic in terms of relationships and yes a cute dog makes a few appearances!I highly recommend this book! It might be long, but it’s a light toned and enjoyable read.

I love this book! It's a gripping story with a strong and lovable female protagonist who's disguised as a boy for most of the book. This twist alone creates a slew of interesting (and sometimes hilarious) situations and exposes gender inequalities and attitudes, many of which still plague us today. A modern reader can definitely relate to the reasons she chose to swap her dress for pantaloons.The main character Harriet aka Harry aka Freddy takes center stage in the action, and she's surrounded by a cast of wonderful (and in some cases quirky) characters. I felt like I knew all of the characters so well by the end of the book, feeling heartbroken and worried for one person, rolling my eyes at the ridiculous antics of another.The setting is definitely a character in the book as well.The descriptions of the natural world are so skillfully written that I felt like I was living in the book and experiencing the wild beauty of the forest, fields and pastures along with Freddy and the rest of the bunch.This book would make a wonderful gift for young (and adult) readers of all genders!

I bought this book because it was written about traveling to The Genesee Valley in the early 1800's. I love history and was hoping to learn new things about this area of New York state. While the book is nicely written, I didn't learn anything new historically. Also, the main character, Harriet, while well developed - seemed to have more characteristics of a 21st century young woman than she did someone born at that time. For example, the character calls a man a misogynist. Although this word has been in the English language for some time, I find it hard to believe that a young girl at that time would have used that word to describe a man. Young people reading this book may have an understanding of this word - However, I don't believe this usage is an accurate depiction of the time period and the story's setting. While nicely written, and I really wanted to love the book, I don't see this book surviving the test of time.

Sixteen-year-old Harriet Winter is happy overall with her life in nineteenth-century New Hampshire: the "beauty of the seasons, the comfort of its rituals, the way the land fed and fostered us..." However, as a woman, Harriet knows her future is not her own; it will be dictated by societal expectations, including marriage to Daniel Long (aka D.U.L), a kind but unexciting landowner. Anxious to shrug off these societal restraints, Harriet leaves with her step-brother/best friend, Gideon, to explore the "wild" terrain of Western New York. In the process, she assumes a new identity and, finally, comes into her own. A gorgeously written historical novel, with evocative images and clever use of colonial-American language . Highly and enthusiastically recommended!

This historical YA novel is a wonderful read. Part adventure, part romance, and most definitely a whole lot of what it means to try to forge a life of your choosing. Harriet, aka Harry/Freddy is a delight. She's sassy, hard working, smart, and funny. Whether it's 1808 or 2018, she wants what all women want--to make their own decisions in life. What she learns along the way as she sets out with her brother to frontier country is at once heart breaking and life affirming. The historical details the author weaves are authentic and help set the tone for what life was like in 1808 for both men and women. I really enjoyed this book!

A good book for those that are new to magic. Protecting yourself, and home from unwanted energy is always of utmost importance. However, unless you are fully experienced, it is my opinion that sympathetic magic, whereas you bind yourself to an object, like a poppet, is better left alone. I also feel that it is unwise to “invoke ancestors to protect you and your family” as outlined in chapter 4. Reason being that unless you know exactly who you’re invoking, you could be inviting an ancestor with low energy and a bad past. Always be cautious.Other than those two issues, I think that this book offers a lot of positive and simple opportunities to practice your skills at energy working.

Extremely useful and wonderful to read! I will definitely be pulling some of these spells out to make them my own!

I really like the section on how spells work. The author tells us, "... if you're looking to use spells to avoid work, you're in for a rude awakening." Ain't it the truth!! Time, patience and more patience are key to working with magic. It is refreshing to see a book confess this at the very beginning. There's no easy way to get what you want in life. In order to succeed, you must work for it.The section on ethics is also very good. On page 17 the author tells the reader, "You don't get to do magic on or for people without their permission." So many new witches jump right into binding magic, curses or even healing spells without first consulting with your client or perspective client. Sometimes a client may be working against the very magic you're casting. Sometimes consent to cast isn't enough. An example of this is when I was working a binding spell for an abusive partner and the client was actively calling the target of the spell. They were following them from work, and driving by the abusive partner's house. This is directly counter productive for a binding spell. Once I found out, I quickly cut the cord with this client. So consent is indeed critical in spell work but so is the responsibility of the client to follow the path the adviser has laid out for them.Circle basics, casting and altars are at the very beginning of the text. Something I find that many spell books are lacking. The author fails to add "Wards" in the Types of spells section on page 25. I was a bit surprised by this; as wards are the most common type of protection spells out there. We only hear about binding more due to Hollywood, but wards are super simple and work well to return magic back to its origin either in reverse or directly as the sender intended. For me, I see this come to fruition in many of my day to day activities. Wards only work on those sending magic to you. If they're sending good magic, they get good magic back. If they send bad magic - well, you know how that goes.The books is divided up on spells related to Body and Spirit, House and Home and Rituals and Protective Objects. On page 166, the author gives us a spell for protecting oneself on public transport. This spell pulls in the Raidho and Eihwaz runes and gives the reader direction on how to apply the runes to a transit pass (bus pass/ticket) for a trouble free journey. The spell is extremely easy and could even be preformed at the bus stop while you wait.As with many of the books I review, my favorite part is the reference section. The key to any good spell book is to be able to find exactly what I'm looking for quickly. The author makes it easy for me to find purification spells, cord magic and much more with the full index in the back. I believe many authors skip this important step. We're witches on the go, we have shit to do, please let me find the spells a bit more easily.Over all I would say this is a great book for those not interested in writing their own spells. They are simply written, easy to use and well thought out. The Purifying Spray on page 88 for example is extremely easy to use and for the most part, made up of ingredients that most witches would have on hand.I would highly recommend adding this book to your standard witchy library. I believe you won't be disappointed.

Great journal for gardeners at any experience level who want more organization and be able to look back in their notes

This is super cute and very nice. It has everything you need to keep track of your garden. Planting, expenses, dates, notes, etc. It is not cheap looking either. I feel like even though I am rather clumsy and will use it a lot, it will last me the duration it needs. I accidentally left it at the library and the librarian called me to tell me and mentioned how nice it is!
