So the IRS tends to look at them fairly carefully, they have been known to come to your house to see what your office looks like.This book, updated to be current for 2006, explains the rules as written down, the rules as actually followed and gives you some tips as to what you should, shouldn't, must, and mustn't do. Beyond the official rules, which are messy enough, there are more or less unknown rules, i.e. computer software that you buy is written off one way (well actually two or three ways), software you create, either for yourself or for sale, is handled quite differently.This book is well written, simple to read and up to date with current law.

Jennifer Fisher's 2004 dance history takes on a pretty daunting task: to explain the Nutcracker ballet's current status in North America as not only an entrenched Christmas tradition, but also everyone's favorite classical ballet. To accomplish this Fisher did her own field research, somewhat anthropological in nature, spending time with both a major professional company, the National Ballet of Canada, and a much smaller company, the Loudon Ballet in Leesburg, Virginia. (Since Fisher's work covers both the United States and Canada, the title of the book is mildly misleading.) She weaves excerpts from interviews and anecdotes from her time with these companies through and around a historical narrative of the original conception and production of Tchaikovsky's and Ivanov's ballet in St. Petersburg in 1892 (like many works that have become beloved classics, it opened to a mixed reception), followed by a chronicle of its gradual importation and proliferation across the Atlantic. George Balanchine and the New York City Ballet, as one might suspect, play an important role in this latter part of her tale.Along the way the author makes frequently telling points about the neat dovetailing of the ballet's scenario with American traditions and values, and how its appeal to children both as performers and audiences has bolstered its popularity. However, there are also digressions into such topics as the sociological import of the various national dances in the second act and how they have been staged (including in Walt Disney's film Fantasia), diverting but not particularly relevant to the central topic. This impression of looseness is also underscored by the rather casual way in which excerpts from Fisher's own research with the ballet companies are dropped into the narrative. Ultimately, Nutcracker Nation reads like a doctoral dissertation interleaved with popular history. As such it is consistently interesting, but a little disheveled in feel.

Combining interviews and historical research, she gives us a wonderful account of the diaspora of Russian ballet alumni. The diaspora started with the rise of Communist Russia and the turmoil of World War I, then accelerated from the the pressure of World War II in Europe. It's not just coincidence that the first U.S. performance was in 1934 by the San Francisco Ballet (America's first professional ballet company) and then in 1944 by the New York City Ballet. By the late 1950s, small ballet companies and schools, such as Virginia Ballet Company and School in Fairfax, VA, were starting to offer the Nutcracker as an annual holiday treat. Throw in a little television, a few famous ballet stars, and you find Nutcracker is a perennial holiday phenomenon.This is a readable book even while it is well-researched non-fiction. I recommend it to every parent of a Nutcracker dancer, and to all the Nutcracker alumni who still perk up when they hear the first notes of the overture.I hope this review is helpful.

If those tears can't squeeze past your heavy armor, then they'll remain inside with the hidden pain until you're ready. If you're lucky though, it'll come up and free you from a whole lot that you didn't even know was detaining you. I recommend considering a therapist to compliment and work through what may come up if you're ready. I did, it was very difficult, but after many months of doing the work, I feel like many weights have been lifted and (cornyness alert) after the tears, I'm feeling clear, honored, and so very grateful!And men, if the title of the book is a turn off for you, perhaps now is perfect time to let down that armor, as a starter, and then get the book and start some real work, with more courage than it would take to walk away.A round of applause for the authors!

At one point while reading this, my junk got triggered a bit in conversation with my husband, and I didn’t initially realize it...but when I went to resume reading this as a way to avoid him, I started reading a vignette that was identical to what I had just happened. And so I handed it to him to read that page (he knew nothing about ACOA or why I was handing him the book), and he responded with, “well that just happened!” At which point I incidentally apologized lol.Bottom line: so relevant, so well written, and essential tool for anyone who has come from alcoholic families (or any other dysfunctional families), and for those around the ACOA who would benefit from better understanding that person!

As a therapist who works with many people who have been in relationships with alcoholics--this is my go-to book. I re-read and recommend this book more than any other. Excellent, important, sometimes difficult because of the honest content. But well written and true. I highly, highly recommend it!

This is a tough book to read. I grew up in an alcoholic family and I saw pieces of myself and my siblings in this book. It's helpful in letting me know I'm not alone. I'm slowly working my way through the process described in the book.

I use this book in my therapy practice regularly. It is a well-written and emotionally moving explanation of how growing up in a dysfunctional family affects us as children and as adults. My clients generally love the personal stories of others the authors use as they can easily identify with them. More importantly, clients quickly gain insight into themselves and why they do what they do or why they seem to run into the same problem situations. Despite the years since it was first published, it remains very relevant.

This book truly opened my eyes and my mind to healing my inner child. I now know that I am not alone and there is hope for me.If you experienced growing up in a family suffering from alcoholism or addiction, this book is for you.

Highly recommend for anyone who grew up in an alcoholic or dysfunctional home. You will absolutely relate to multiple stories of other people who have been through similar circumstances, appreciate how they not only how they survived but thrived, and be able to use their experiences to better process your own experiences. Highly highly recommend.

I bought this book, not because I have any alcoholism in my past family history, but because my grown step-children do and a friend of mine suggested it could help understand what they deal with on a regular basis and how they react to certain triggers in life. It is helpful on all levels. I also gave a copy to a friend of mine who grew up with an alcoholic mother and she says the book is very helpful in explaining so many facets of alcoholic behavior she wished she had known about this book years ago.

There's no way for me to do this wise book justice, but it's filled with thought-provoking reality checks about how much closer we get to God through relationships rather than organizations and programs.Jacobsen reminded me of the power of deep, Jesus-focused relationships: friendships that happen naturally and grow and develop over time around this one unifying pursuit. Living this way can be chaotic and messy, but is ultimately redemptive because God knows how to sort out our messes.I'm not convinced that we need to completely abolish meeting weekly as a church, or during the week in groups to pray, consider the Bible, etc. (particularly here in greater Boston, where if something isn't a recurring event, it takes three weeks to find a time to get together). But I love the way he prioritizes relationships over programs. I'd recommend this book to anyone who feels like church has become a second job because you're there 20+ hours a week doing programs and classes.

This book has summed up everything I've had rolling around inside for years. It's so wonderful to see it all put to print and expressed so beautifully.I spent 12 years in what proved to be an abusive church, and once out, quite a few years ago, I started my journey out of the man-made institution and into the real Church. I initially found a host of books on the small church movement which, on the surface, looked very promising. But that's just not happening out here, and as Wayne says, it can so easily turn into just another man-made system that will eventually leave God out of the equation. This book is what put my thinking over the top, out of man's big ideas and into the Kingdom of God which is within us (Lk 17:21).Yes, there will be opposition from traditionalists, but that's to be expected. Change comes hard, but the new wineskin is so exciting!The only complaint I would have is that I wish he'd included more scripture references on the passages he is referring to. I like to see it for myself, and I still haven't found a couple of them. But that being said, I still haven't finished the book; I keep going back and underlining more.It's so completely freeing to realize that the systems of man aren't God's perfect plan, even though He's used them for centuries. I've found Church. Thank you, Wayne!!

I read a lot of books on Christian spirituality and spiritual formation (discipleship or apprenticeship to Jesus). This offering by Wayne Jacobsen is in a category by itself in my estimation? It touches on many aspects and current trends in Christianity and "church". For my wife and I it affirms, confirms and informs the season of life in Christ that we find ourselves in currently, (I'm 65, she is 57, kids raised and gifting us with grandchildren). This book will be a tough read for dedicated and committed traditional institutional church folk (we once were). But it will be a great blessing for those seeking the "more" that Christ promised and continues to offer.

I loved this book. It left me with the freedom enjoy a Sunday meeting or not. Church isn't the building, it's interaction. It's a great book and what I really loved is that he doesn't bash the traditional building service, as seen mostly in America today, and doesn't make it seem like you have to make a choice. Jacobsen allows you to feel free either way, and encourages you to see where else you may already be having church and not even realizing it.

Wayne has a way of speaking this message with truth and grace, no toxic negativity towards the church building or those who choose to gather there. He has broadened the scope of my misconceptions in offering a larger view that goes beyond the walls of corporate church. A breath of fresh air. Throughout the book I felt burdens my unchurched heart has carried for decades being lifted in a way nothing else has. I have and will continue to recommend this book to people who are seeking release from the heavy yoke of religion and looking for the unforced rhythm's of grace the One we live in and lives in us is known for. Thank you, Wayne!

This is a wonderful book if you are among the few who see through the contemporary church culture of an uber-pastor and a praise team, of nickels and noses, and worldly living, and recognize that there must be more. If your heart yearns for all that Jesus died for and is aching to realize it - press on. The upward call of God in Christ isn't found in any institution. It is an inner journey that we must be willing to start alone and let the Head build in and through us. We are not saved to serve the church but to be the church as we serve its only Head.

I really enjoyed the stories and insight about the Church Jesus is building. It is not a building or denomination, but a group of people who love God and are focused on Christ. Formal meetings at set times and in set places do not constitute the Church. When we keep our eyes on Jesus and allow his love to flow through us to those God brings into our lives, we are being the church. It is not sitting in meetings, letting a select few participate in an organized service. The author makes this book interesting and informative, and does not show any condemnation to those who may see things differently.

One of the recurring themes in Wayne's writing is that Church as the people of God is a life embedded entity. It seems the minute we extricate it into a programmatic, theological or event-based entity, it becomes artificial or contrived. This resonates with me personally but would certainly frustrate others. Wayne's answer to the ills of the North American audience church is to reclaim life and relationships as a primary context in which God builds His Church as only He can.I believe that Wayne's perspective provides gracious spaciousness for those who feel confined by church as we have known it.

If anyone has turned to this book it has definately been because they have never spoken with one of Jehovah's Witnesses or DOCTORS regarding blood transfusions.Jehovah's Witnesses DO seek medical treatment. If anyone would go on the internet and look up BLOODLESS SURGERY you will see that there is NO NEED TO USE BLOOD. There are blood alternatives.Mr. Reed is telling everyone that the earth is flat earth and that people are still using leaches. In my opinion, he is using an OLD controversial prejudice to make money.
