They argue that conventional, expensive eco-efficiency measures things like recycling or emissions reduction are inadequate for protecting the long-term health of the planet. Our industrial products are simply not designed with environmental safety in mind; there's no way to reclaim the natural resources they use or fully prevent ecosystem damage, and mitigating the damage is at best a stop-gap measure. What the authors propose in this clear, accessible manifesto is a new approach they've dubbed "eco-effectiveness": designing from the ground up for both eco-safety and cost efficiency. They cite examples from their own work, like rooftops covered with soil and plants that serve as natural insulation; nontoxic dyes and fabrics; their current overhaul of Ford's legendary River Rouge factory; and the book itself, which will be printed on a synthetic "paper" that doesn't use trees. Because profitability is a requirement of the designs, the thinking goes, they appeal to business owners and obviate the need for regulatory apparatus. These shimmery visions can sound too good to be true, and the book is sometimes frustratingly short on specifics, particularly when it comes to questions of public policy and the political interests that might oppose widespread implementation of these designs. Cradle to Cradle describes the harmful environmental impact caused by the manufacture and packaging of goods. While we may calculate the cost of raw materials to make a product, we do not include the "cost"/harm to the environment. We do not choose environmentally friendly materials to make products. We do not factor in the permanent loss of those materials when the products are down cycled and end up in landfills. We ignore the wasteful and impactful packaging of products as well. Cradle to Cradle challenges us to consider all costs and impacts involved when designing, manufacturing and packaging products.The authors walk the talk by using a non-paper substance for the book's pages that outlast the pages of paper books and can be recycled into other books (not down cycled or discarded). Finally, I've found the book that speaks simply and eloquently about the problems I've felt no one is addressing -- the ROOTS of the problems we are now facing, namely, lack of intelligent design and forethought. Studying to be a scientist in college, I remember being so frustrated with some science publications -- they were virtually unreadable! -- and thinking it's a problem of the system and of the author, who does not consider why he is writing what he is writing. He should be writing to communicate information, in a simple way that could be available to a large audience. Instead, it seemed that people were writing to get published to get grants to produce more research that they continued to miscommunicate in more impossible-to-read publications. And I've felt similarly about the way our whole human-made world runs -- we've forgotten what the point is, which is to live and enjoy and have our kids continue to do the same. And it's easy to foget when one has a reductionist approach, when one specializes in something and never looks up to see what's around. This book should be taught in all schools as part of the curriculum. It's a breath of fresh air of thinking globally and holistically in a world that is largely reductionist in reasoning. It is very encouraging to see such good work come from such an interdisciplinary partnership. And I love the fact that this book is a polymer!

The book is a well-argued manifesto on why and how we need to change our core philosophy of how we design products.The first thing you notice is that this book is rather heavy compared to normal books its size. This is explained by the authors trying to live their philosophy by creating a book out of a material that can be truly recycled as opposed to current paper which, while it can be reused, requires several unattractive processes and is not endlessly repeatable.The book makes many other decent arguments for why we should think of products as temporary services rather than things we own and therefore dispose of when we are done. The book makes a case for current recycling (or down-cycling as they call it) measures as being okay - as long as it is thought of as no more than a temporary stop-gap measure to be used while we pursue true technical and regular nutrient recycling.The only improvement I would like to see is more in-depth examples of how this process has been applied to commercial processes. They kept going back to the same one or two examples and I think there are more out there and I suspect by the time this book in republished there could be even more worthy examples.

About the Author

Dr. Poursaee is an assistant professor in Glenn Department of Civil Engineering at Clemson University. He received his BS in Materials Engineering from the University of Tehran and his MS and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Waterloo, Canada. His primary areas of research include corrosion and electrochemical behaviors of metals specifically steel bars in reinforced concrete structures, concrete materials, structural health monitoring, and non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques. Prior to joining Clemson University, Dr. Poursaee worked as research assistant professor at Purdue University for three years and as senior engineer for more than ten years in different fields of materials engineering including corrosion, quality control, NDE and failure analysis. Dr. Poursaee has published more than 30 peer-reviewed papers, monographs, book and book chapters. He is a registered professional engineer in Ontario, Canada and serves as a member of the editorial board of the Advances in Civil Engineering Materials (ACEM) Journal, published by the ASTM.

Many people argue whether Francisco Franco (1892-1975, he died at age 82) was a good or bad man, helpful to Spain and its people or a man who pursued self-interest, whether he was intelligent or barbaric. Some praise him for saving the country from Communism. Others stress that he rode the coattails of Hitler and Mussolini to power, which he misused, a man who felt his own way was the only right way, who stressed the “Christian Civilization” even on his death bed. He insisted on the “traditional role” for women, meaning they were restricted to only certain tasks.Hourly History gives us good information about this man. Among much else, we learn that: He was the longest running dictator in history. He was the dictator of Spain for 36 years. He was a borderline fascist. He killed many of his opponents, between 15,000 and 50,000 people. He tried to control Spain even after his death.

Although understanding that a biography can not easily be disclosed in depth in a 40 minutes reading book format, I must say that, in my opinion, this is just a "political correct" focused work, well far away from the actual biography of the subject. You can feel this approach after the first 10 lines. Many and important events from different sides missed(?)absolutely critical to understand that difficult time in Spain,s History.Everybody knows that General Franco was a dictator for 36 years. There is no much more deployed in this work that could help to understand the dictator,s personality besides de classic cruelty in the aftermath of the war and those things.Dissapointing.

Though not quite a 5 star rating, this overview of Spain's Franco is somewhere between 4 and 5 stars. Nicely written and informative, a nice view of a piece of history. The man, Franco, contending he was a supporter of Christendom, was rather UN-Christian-like in his rise to power, was an able military man, sometimes Statesman and conflicted human being. As with almost any country, the introduction of some form of a free-market process usually improves a country's economics, as is the case with Spain under Franco in his waning years. Great man? Not so sure, but a couple of things in his favor; his resistance to Hitler and his slowly giving into the idea of a democracy.

Sums up his life rather succinctly but (somehow) just does not leave the reader with a clear 'picture' of the man himself.Could also do with better proof-reading to clear up a bunch of grammatical mistakes in the use of words, punctuation, etc....

Ruthless yet effective would be a succinct version of the book. Most writers and arists, coming as many do from the leftist fringe, have focused on the period of the Spanish Civil War and Franco's seldom-denied harshness. The book does well in showing those 4 years as part of a 40-year strategy of keeping Spain out of foreign entanglements. An excellent short biography.

Although well written, this Hourly History Book is almost exactly like another Hour History Book titled Spanish Civil War. Both books tells how Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin interfered with the War. They tested their weapons and personnel during The Spanish Civil War.

A short but thorough history of Franco, the man ,the leader The Spain !He was quite brilliant and wary of outsiders.Courted by both the Axis Powers and the Alies, he was able to stay somewhat neutral and survive.

Clearly written, interesting, succinct story of Spain's brutal military leader and dictator during Spain's civil war, through WWII, and his death in 1975. This book, coupled with Hourly History's book on the Spanish Civil War provide an excellent overview on Spain from the 1930s to 1975.
