About the Author

An acclaimed media health expert, Dr. Darria Gillespie earned her medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine, her residency in Emergency Medicine from Yale University School of Medicine and her MBA from Harvard Business School. After residency, she joined the faculty at Harvard Medical School, where she worked in the ER at Beth Israel Deaconness Medical Center in Boston, MA. She is a practicing emergency physician, currently working as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Tennessee School of Medicine and formerly on faculty at Harvard Medical School. She is the national spokesperson for the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Before I had my first child, I read parenting books by doctors...and I haven't had time since. This book's format offers the reliability of facts based in science, but presents it with the convenience of a listicle--you can pick it up and read just a page or two--or less!--and get a lot out of it. That's great for those of us who don't get ten straight minutes to ourselves! Dr. Darria has incredible credentials combined with an accessible, real-mom way of writing--I feel like I can trust her guidance AND understand it! She's also witty and real in her writing.The topics addressed help me make choices that I face as a parent--advice on realistic ways to get my kids to eat healthier, have better sleep habits, etc. I also REALLY appreciate the focus on being empathetic toward myself and taking care of my own health, sleep, and so on. Being a new mom made this very difficult for me, and she gives great, specific advice on how to shed the "mommy guilt," as she calls it.This is a great book for moms (and dads!) who want reliable guidance in bite-size amounts. This is stuff you can actually do in your real life, and it helps the whole family. Great purchase!

As a mom of 2 I felt like Dr Darria's book was made for me - she reminds us that Moms are people too, and shows us how to take care of ourselves and our families in really practical, achievable ways. The book can be read cover to cover, or has a great index that makes it useful as a manual for living to refer back to - I definitely will be giving copies of this as gifts to new moms!!

As a mom of two adult boys and a teen girl, I was a little skeptical about finding much applicable to me in this book. Boy was I wrong! Dr. Darria's writing is light yet informative, fresh, and enlightening. And even though my kids are well past the toddler years, I found her advice to be relevant to me as not only a mom but also a woman trying my best to make my own health (physical and mental) a priority. So many of her hacks make perfect sense—I wonder why I haven't heard them before. The book is in an easy-to-digest format and perfect for reading in those small, downtime moments at the carpool line or kids' practices.

We have all heard the usual tropes - get more sleep, eat better, find time to exercise, self care, etc, etc, etc. But no one tells you HOW, and no one has put those hows in one place. I can't reccomend this book enough. Dr. Darria's voice is warm, kind, funny, and completely BS-free. She is not some doctor telling you what to do with no thoughts to the practicality of her advice. She has been in the trenches and it shows. Even if you put five of her hacks into practice every month, your life (and your family's life) will improve significantly. Buy this book for yourself, for your expecting friends, for anyone who is balancing being a parent and being a person.

I bought this book for a girlfriend who works in social services and foster care. I heard of Dr. Darria on tv and thought this looked like a good teaching agent for her foster parents. I read about half of it looking at all the hacks... and they all make sense and are really easy to incorporate into a normal life. Plus the author doesn’t just make these claims, she backs them up with studies and real medical science. My gf said she thought it would be a great book to give to new foster parents taking on younger ones and really seemed to like it. Quick and fun read but worth it.

As a mom, I get through life by asking for advice from my mom friends - whether it’s the best way to sneak in veggies or a good way to sneak in some quality sleep time. Mom Hacks is full of all that advice and more, from a DOCTOR who is a mom that lives in a realistic world!!!!! Can’t recommend it more.

This isn't your regular mommy blog type stuff. Instead of stay-at-home moms telling you how to live, this is an actual doctor who is also a mom giving you helpful information based in science. Some of it is new information I've never heard. And some of it is common sense, but for the first time, you hear the reasons behind the common sense advice. Science backs up these hacks and Darria writes these in a way that doesn't make you feel bad about yourself if you can't (or won't) do everything right now.

This is an outstanding book! The information in this book could be life changing when applied, and the great thing is that the author makes it applicable by breaking it down into bite size pieces and suddenly self-care and healthy living become do-able rather than overwhelming or just one more thing to add to the endless to-do list. This is not a gimmicky book based on pseudo-science; it is a well-researched book written by a medical doctor and presented in such a way that is easy to grasp.
