From the Back Cover

Long Island's natural beauty, its pristine shoreline and ocean beaches, its proximity and easy access from New York City, and its suitability for yachting and other recreational pursuits made it the perfect place for the leisure class. From the Civil War to the beginning of World War II, almost 1000 estates were built by the nation's richest and most prominent families, among them the Morgans, the Vanderbilts, the Hearsts, the Astors, the Whitneys, and many others. While many of their wonderful mansions have been destroyed or converted to institutional use, hundreds still stand. All are here in a magnificent volume that is both a rich architectural history and a compendium of the architects and architectural firms who designed the breathtaking homes. Their ranks include Delano & Aldrich; Cass Gilbert; Richard Morris Hunt; McKim, Mead & White; Horace Trumbauer, Calvert Vaux; and Warren & Wetmore.

This is an extremely well detailed and profusely illustrated account of the outstanding work produced by a highly talented group of architects on Long Island. The book itself is an acknowledgement of the subject as it is designed to be displayed as a coffee table adornment. The weighty tome is well printed on quality art paper and fully bound in the manner of books that need to cope with frequent viewings. It is an impressive account of a recent period that will never come again but will remain the source of interest to anyone with any curiosity of how the fabulously rich lived at home or on vacation. This book is not cheap but is highly recommended to anyone with an interest in this subject as the content will keep the reader absorbed for many delightful hours.

An ok book but I expected more color photos and in depth articles about each house. The little articles are very short paragraphs with small photos.

good
