Trestle of Death: Murder Unpunished takes the reader on a ride of frustration, anger and helplessness at this senseless murder and inadequate legal follow through and lack of justice. The author does an excellent job of bringing to light more details in the death of Wayne Watson. His work was difficult due to the length of time since the horrendous crime, missing court reports and the nature of gathering information. He handled the jumps in time and facts deftly and kept my interest from start to finish. No one should die because of their sexual orientation. Not in the 1980's nor today. Bob Holderbaum's first book is more than worth the read and speaks to justice denied for a common everyday hardworking man. I appreciate Holderbaum's extensive efforts in keeping Wayne Watson's--and others like him--life and death memorialized.

Before I read this book, I expected Jay McInerney to write in a similar way to Bret Easton Ellis, as many critics consider the two authors to be in the same ideological camp. I have only read Ellis’ debut novel Less Than Zero, which I know is not wholly representative of his oeuvre, yet I can draw conclusions about Ellis’ usual themes. I believe Frank Ocean summarized the experience well in the song “Novacane,” his characters have pushed the envelope of experience so far that self-destructive behavior is the only thing that has any power to make them feel emotion.This was not the case in this book, as I found Jay McInerney’s protagonist to be not so far gone. Though he is prone to self-destructive behavior, there is still oftentimes a self-awareness that his frequent cocaine use and late nights are not healthy. I found the second-person point of view to be a little gimmicky, ultimately because I don’t think it added much to the effect of the novel. Had he used the first person I think the book would have read mostly the same. However, I did feel able to identify with the main character, I was also once a white, twenty-four year old male, living in New York City, an aspiring writer, struggling with a job that I had no passion for, and engaging in self-destructive behavior. The novel was very relatable, and McInerney writes about the city in a recognizable way, despite it taking place in the eighties. I recommend this book as a quick, light read!

Not being from the ivy league myself I missed out on being the golden boy fresh out of college with a plum job , personal problems and an inclination to self destruct , so its a relief to have read this book even if its 25 years late.Very well written by some guy that would ignore me at a party.

I only read the book because I heard the author interviewed. As I read the book I kept reading more out of curiosity than for anything else. But at the end it all came together and I was very moved emotionally.The author's way with words is exquisite.

McInerney's book remains relevant in 2014. I'd never read a book in second person before and while it took a few chapters to get into it, I thought it allowed for a deeper connection with the character. The main character chronicles his life in New York while experiencing quarter-life ennui. It remains on the surface, but has a beating heart somewhere under it.You read this book when your apartment is filthy, you're directionless and are looking for a kindred spirit. Highly recommended.

This reminded me of Candace Bushnell’s columns and other writing of that time when New York was all coke and cocktail dresses. It was probably more fun to live it than it is to read it.

At first i thought this would be a very Brett Easton Ellis-eque book, which it seemed to be at the beginning. It starts with a seemingly shallow character which is yourself as this book is in second person. The character seems to live for drugs, trying to get laid, and just trying to find depth in a shallow pool. But then you grow to love him. Slowly little clues are revealed and you emphasize with him. It turned out to be a beautiful story, and even sad at times. It has real depth. And it isnt long at 200 pages, but it is full, very full.

This was the LONGEST under 200pg book ever. I loved some of his other works "Story of My Life" but this one was just boring and never did it for me. Trying to understand how they made a movie out of this because the book was painful.

The good old eighties. I feel I missed so much. But just reading the book makes up for it. The Creative Class crashes, burns, resurrects.

Might be a little too much about the box office revenue of various films, but overall a good work. Well-read by narrator Mark Douglas Nelson.

I've read dozens of nutrition books, and Dr Joel Fuhrman has become far & away my most trusted source. Read ANY of his books! Superimmunity is still my favorite. This one is more focused on weight loss (including psychological aspects) and slightly less specifically about the diseases of affluence that kill most of us, but it is more of the same facts & same message to eat copious quantities of greens & other whole vegetables, ample berries, nuts, seeds, & legumes, little or no animal products (even lowering his limits in this newest book), moderate INTACT whole grains, no sweeteners (caloric nor artificial), little or no processed foods, and zero trans fats. It's not the macronutrients, but the micronutrients!In this latest book, I particularly liked his criticisms of other diets. He attacks the Atkins/Paleo crowd for too much animal protein and too few nuts, seeds, & beans--just what I felt about Good Calories Bad Calories and The Calorie Myth--although the latter acknowledges Fuhrman and follows his lead in pushing for large amounts of phytonutrient-rich non-starchy vegetables.In fact, Fuhrman covered every one of my concerns with Jonathan Bailor's popular new (low carb high meat) book The Calorie Myth (which is still well worth reading AFTER Fuhrman). Bailor really pushes soy protein powders but here Fuhrman explains some concerns about protein powders (although not mentioning the hexane used in extraction).It may take 20+ years for the heightened levels of IGF-1 in Paleo dieters to surface as detectable cancer, but watch out! Fuhrman agrees with the low-carb concepts, but instead of falling into the meat trap, he incorporates low-carbs into a much broader health scenario (with protein from greens & beans). He still prefers algal supplements to fish for EPA & DHA, and he advises wild fish because of contaminants like dioxin in farmed fish.This time, he goes into a bit more detail about carbohydrates, soy isolates, meat, and especially dairy raising the IGF-1 hormone, resulting in fat, cancer, atherosclerosis, hypertension, aging, and any monster you care to name. Even the Calorie Restriction Society turns out to have significantly higher IGF-1 than vegans.Fuhrman attacks the anti-wheat crowd (Grain Brain & Wheat Belly) for confusing flour with intact grains. He attacks the USDA for just about everything--too much meat, dairy, & grain, not enough vegetables, nuts, & beans. (Really, it's too much politics and corporate influence.) He attacks aspects of the Mediterranean diet (pasta & olive oil). He even politely indicts the China Study / vegan crowd for too little plant fat (avocado, coconut, olives, nuts, & seeds). He is right on target!Another topic now covered in a bit more detail is the danger of yo-yo dieting and how regained weight tends to be the more dangerous visceral fat (belly/organs) rather than subcutaneous fat.He reduces his acceptance of eggs on pg 146 stating, "a 23 percent increased death rate from those eating more than one egg a day", but I'm pretty sure the death rate is 100% (just like taxes), even for vegans. Besides, if you divide us into ovophiles & ovophobes, the egg-eating crowd surely also consumes more pepperoni pizza & ice cream, so such correlations, the backbone of much nutritional advice, should not be swallowed too gullibly.(Fortunately) There's nothing remarkably different from his other books, yet they're all worth reading. In this one he adds further information, clarification, case histories, and recipes, and it's at least as good as the others. Now he elevates the importance of raw onions & cooked mushrooms. He explains that onions must be chopped before cooking to break cell walls to release the alliinase enzyme for chemical conversions, just like the enzyme myrosinase in cruciferous vegies that converts glucosides to isothiocyanates. (My hypothesis, if you like your roasted garlic whole, [as with cruciferous] is to eat a little raw green onions with any cooked allium so that the alliinase enzyme is reintroduced.)Some reviewers complain that this book is just a repeat of prior books, and while it is mostly that, why not read this now instead of re-reading the older ones. Fuhrman is worth re-reading.Some reviewers object to the title because this is "yet another diet", although it is more of an informed lifestyle. Of course you don't count calories or watch the scale, but I also completely ignore the mentions of portion sizes, percentages, and schedules and just eat by the concepts (but do correlate your carbohydrate intake to the caloric demands anticipated after the meal). The title helps make this the perfect gift to several fad-diet yo-yo-weight friends for whom I hope it is The Last Diet. (But such a title might sound too fatal.)The appendix is a suitably cautious review of supplements, advising the possibility of a few like vitamins B12 & D but mostly warning of specific dangers, well in accord with advice in Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition and in The Vitamin D Solution. Iodine, zinc, and DHA are covered.Dr Fuhrman is a genuine healer, weaning people off of medications and into healthy lifestyles. He points out how detrimental our medical paradigm is, not only to our health but also to the nation's economy--with diabesity and its direct costs already unprecedented in human history and slated to rise to astronomical proportions if we don't quickly and radically change our paradigm from medical intervention to healthy eating. It's amazing that most doctors don't even know and won't hear of his simple plant-based healings.Searching for any criticism of his principles, all I can muster is that he could say more about spices (see Healing Spices by Aggarwal), doesn't mention circadian rhythms in relation to insulin & weight (see Lights Out, with reservations), and prefers "unnatural" (newly invented) algal extracts over my delicious salmon & herring as sources of EPA & DHA (in accord with The China Study crowd & lowering IGF-1). I can't recall if he has ever discussed oxylate concerns (e.g. in spinach & almonds) or the goitrogenic (iodine depleting) properties of cruciferous vegetables. He distinguishes starchy from non-starchy (you can eat them raw) vegetables in The End of Diabetes, but I don't recall reading it here, except in regards to potatoes. I'd also like him to discuss low-fructose versus high-fructose fruits, as incompletely mentioned in The Calorie Myth. Nor has he yet addressed my concerns about the benefits and detriments of coconut and its oil.These very minor "criticisms" are really "grasping at straws" because Fuhrman is more unassailable than any other nutritional advisor. Fuhrman is THE ONE to follow.I'm neither overweight, diabetic, nor ill, yet this book was a valuable read, as was his The End of Diabetes (most especially the chapter on legumes) and his Superimmunity.After Fuhrman, I also suggest reading Anticancer by Servan-Schreiber, Foods To Fight Cancer by Beliveau, Healthy At 100 by John Robbins, The Calorie Myth (but don't eat his way), and the delightful new Death By Food Pyramid by Minger.Whether you choose this latest book or an earlier one, Fuhrman is your ticket to health wisdom. Then the real challenge is to implement it in your daily life, and he addresses that motivation in this book mostly through testimonials. To your health!8/14/14: I have added more, as a comment.

I watched a video by Firas Zahabi on the Tristar gym Youtube page and he mentioned this book. I immediately bought the book and read it cover to cover. It will transform the way you think about nutrition. I started incorporating the principals of this book slowly and have reaped the benefits over the past year. I've lost 60 lbs and have gained significant muscle due to training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.What worked for me was adding a huge salad with a fruit based dressing everyday. After about a month, I started incorporating a home made bean based soup as a meal everyday. After about another month, I added a smoothie using dark leafy greens, fruit, variety of seeds etc. These 3 meals make up the base of my daily diet. And as stated before, I've lost significant weight, have great energy, built muscle, and sleep much better.A few tips:1) Prep your salad veggies all at once. I bought a vegetable chopper which decreases prep time a lot. Then I store the veggies in containers so that you can whip together salads in mere minutes.2) Make a huge pot of soup every Sunday. It's harder to cheat when you always have healthy options in the fridge!3) Most leafy greens freeze fine up to a month or more. Don't let your greens spoil!4) Get in touch with your body and now what true hunger feels like.5) I still drink black coffee and unsweetened tea, but not as much as I used to. I think the book says not to, but it's what worked for me, you may be different.Good luck on your journey!!

Deciding between Eat To Live or The End of Dieting:In this book, compared with his others, it's a lot easier to read, but it's a bit more "trust the doctor" versus laying out a massive scientific pile of evidence. So if you are a born skeptic, get Eat to Live. If you accept that veggies are good for you, then skip that and just get to "follow the good doctor's advice" of this book.I also felt Eat To Live is a harsher diet... it's very, very strict, and if followed to the letter, will result in faster weight loss and health benefits. It's just really, really hard. In The End of Dieting, he loosens up a bit, and it may take you 3-4 times longer to get the results, but will be easier going there.If you have a major medical issue and are facing heart surgery, for example, get Eat To Live and take the tough medicine.If you just have 20-30 pounds to lose or want to just eat healthier to avoid FUTURE health issues, then go easy on yourself and do The End of Dieting.About the content:If you read enough diet/nutrition books, you start to ask youself? What is common knowledge and what is new here? In general, folks, NEW IS BAD.For lasting health with few side effects, find the "common ground" of all diets that have worked in the past.For Fuhrman, his diet is based on common sense and what we all know in the back of our minds to be true. We need to eat less meat and cheese, and a lot more veggies (and fruit, just under some reasonable control).What this book does however, is give you the vast science behind it so you can justify the fact that, let's be honest, steamed asparagus is NEVER going to taste as good as a donut or peanut butter and jelly sandwich.So I absolutely believe that of all the diet books out there, all of them, this one is the healthiest. It's just not easy.

Well worth the price. Has over 150 questions plus bonus practice test. Also, provides an estimated number of types of questions that can appear on the test. Black and white version is very clear. I would recommend purchasing black and white since the test will be in this format.

This is a wonderful resource for younger children who are demonstrating gifted and talented behaviors. Since children in preschool and kindergarten are still learning to read, much of this test requires children to rely on their listening and visualization skills. I do not believe that this text would make a child gifted and talented simply by using this text. However, this is a great resource for students who will be experiencing the OLSAT as the questions help students get familiar with the text format, vocabulary, and types of sections. I also find the test tips and strategies very helpful. Great resource overall for both parents and teachers alike!

I was born and raised in New York, where I resided 45 years of my life. For most of those years, there are certain illuminating memories one can never forget. 'Grand Central Station' is one of them. I recall for several years as my dad commuted from Long Island to NYC five days a week to work in Con Edison for 33 years, and all the trips I made for many different reasons to use it for transportation. He always spoke about Grand Central Station as being a part of his life as a commuter, running from train-to-train with hundreds of busy people who were able to work good jobs, because the transportation was available. With over 10 million people who live in NYC, combined with tourists, Grand Central has become a valuable landmark in history. I knew conductors and several commuters, who were personal friends, and I remember that Grand Central was a popular topic for conversation. Sam Roberts of the New York Times and Pete Hamil highlight the history of the famous Grand Central Terminal, celebrating its 100th anniversary. The authors take the reader on a fascinating behind-the-scenes tour as they guide you through tunnels, passageways, the command center, and much more. Tourists and commuters have their own stories, but the most interesting are stories from commuters who traveled on it half their lives. I do not live in New York City but have been a frequent visitor since my college days (mid 1960s). I first visited it toward the end of the PennCentral railroad. I witnessed the terminal's decline when one could not venture into the lower gate level and one of my favorate bakeries (located on that lower level) closed. I have also been to the terminal many times since its renewal. At least two or three times a year my wife and I just visit the terminal to walk around, have a meal (the Grand Central Oyster Bar is my lunch favorite), go through the markets, etc. I have always been impressed with GCT as a building and as a functional organism. Mr. Robert's book haa added greatly to my appreciation of the terminal and makes me yearn for yet another couple of hours there. The book is an "easy read." The text font is easy on the eyes and large enough for even older eyes. The layout is good. There are lots of pictures, though I wish they were bigger. However, the images are clear and add to the text. I wish there was a little more on the technical aspects of moving trains in and out of the terminal and images taken during the building of the terminal. However, these criticisms are minor. I enjoyed the book and recommend it to anyone with an interest in this monument.

Still reading this, but it is hard to put down. One the greatest pleasures of visiting NYC 3 or 4 times a year is to spend time in Grand Central Station.

Having grown up outside NYC and travelled on Metro North countless times, I found this book fascinating and well-written. Not sure it would appeal to everyone, but history buffs dig in!

Thrilling, exciting, magical.

This is a well researched, insightfully written paean to an iconic building -- one that in many ways transformed the city of New York as much as the experience of arrival and departure by rail. The writing is superb. My only criticism is that I would have liked the book to be more lavishly illustrated with better photographs of the contemporary state of the building. There are, however, many good historical pictures and you will certainly get a sense of the terminal through post-restoration photos, even if you have not been there in person. Highly recommended.

I got this as a gift for my husband and he loved it. It is not quite a coffee table style book - there are others out there that have more and probably larger, better photos- but it is a great narrative and story. And that was what I was looking for. The photos included are also lovely.

Shame of me for not noticing this book is only 77 pages and it turned out maybe 60 pages of content. Despite that I was hoping it would be like a quick reference guide but instead it reads like an overly long blog filled with generic common sense tips. The author occasionally rents out her whole house that's located in one of the most expensive cities in the US and thus her claim at being an expert. There's no instruction here; only basic advice based on her limited experience. For example, she glosses over any other type of rental (partial house, room, etc) only mentioning that it can be done, there's generic advice on legal or financials (e.g. save receipts), and nothing about the logistics of the website or application itself. Save your money - there's better information available online.

This author has done a solid job of organizing a great deal of information into a comprehensive easy-to-read guide. After reading it cover to cover, I appreciate the step-by-step details, insider tips, and real-life examples. I'm an experienced database programmer, and spent many years with PHP/MySQL and Oracle stuff, and this was my first Intro to the C# way of doing things. It really helped a lot.It's definitely more oriented to the beginner, but that's what they were aiming for. Old pros will find out how it's done in the C#/.net arena and still find the book useful.I like how it goes through some theory (even if I already know it) and then gives good examples. I feel like if I were a complete beginner that after going through this book I would have an excellent handle on the subject with this book.Some of the bad reviews focus on the repetition and padding in the book, which it has some of that. But keep in mind that "beginning" is right in the title and this is meant as a hands on tutorial style book for beginners to learn databases.In that regard, I feel the book does a very good job. Plus it's pretty thin and doesn't stray from it's core subject much. It's nice work.

I have the physical copy of this book but, since I have a Kindle, I decided to get the Kindle version so I wouldn't have to lug around the book itself. Big mistake.The code samples in this book don't adjust in size depending on what you have your text size set at. That means you end up with code samples that are very tiny. So tiny, in fact, that some may need a magnifying glass to read them. The rest of the text though, other than the programs and code samples, is perfectly readable. I wish Amazon would take the formating of Kindle books a little more seriously.

If you have even the most rudimentary acquaintance with C# and SQL you'll be sorry you bought this book; it honestly doesn't go past week one of a typical beginner's class. Plenty, plenty of white space, plenty of "Here is what I'm going to say, here is what I'm saying, here is what I just said," but I for one found literally nothing that I hadn't already learned from a couple of afternoons of wrestling with my own project with occasional help from MSDN. Databases are a very big topic, with many subtleties that one doesn't want to always have to be learning the hard way, and C# has become an impressively powerful tool for managing them, but this book can't even be called an introduction to the topic. Shocking, really, and most disappointing.

It is pretty good introduction to Database programming in C#, it has the basics that you may have overlooked if you are already programming and builds a solid foundation for new devs

Avoid buying this book, the links provided in the book are invalid and if you want to install the AdventureWorks database which they use for examples, good luck!

This is exactly what it says it is, beginning databases from novice to professional, although a professional will quickly skim through it and determine it's not necessary for them.I've been doing this kind of programming since 1985, but I'll be the first to admit that I don't and can't know everything. I've spent most of the past 24 years working in obsolete languages and IDE's--if something WORKS, I'll stick with it. So I'm coming to C# a little late in the game. All I want from a book like this are quick examples of how to make a tool do what I want, and maybe a brief explanation of how something works. Once I learn syntax, it stays with me and I don't like to waste a lot of time reading things that don't apply to me.This book is PERFECT in that regard, each chapter tells you what they're going to teach, why you would want to learn it, how to "Try it out" and finally "How it works."If you're the kind of person who learns by doing, this is the book for you. No, it won't answer all of your questions but it will give you enough of a working knowledge of SQL Server MSE, and how to at least get started in C# with it. The main thing when you're starting out with something like this is to build some confidence and MOMENTUM, then you can start asking the right questions and looking to other reference materials for your answers.After that, you'll probably never need to open this book again. Most people will finish it in a week or two.
