Review

GOODREADS: "Absolutely riveting. The author weaves a carefully crafted, historically accurate tale with such skill that you are surprised by the twists and turns, even if you're familiar with the history. Her characters are raw, highly detailed, and believable and the story slowly, but surely, recreates the long-ago world of Nordic explorers so accurately that you can just about feel the icy wind on your face. Can't wait for the next volume!"

What a lovely surprise. I have read many books about the vikings since I am Swedish and enjoy their history. This book is quite different. Well written and interesting and showing that not all viking history was about raiding and killing. The people of Iceland ha done enormous problem. Food. And so they had to find a way to get men to sail (row) the seas in order to find land where they could farm. After much suffering they found land but also a unique race of humans who with kindness and love actually managed to change the Icelanders attitude and thinking. Is this even possible? No idea but I felt this was very positive, I loved seeing how Erik and Thio slowly changed and became better people. I hope for a sequel where Leif follows in his parents footsteps

I finished “Viking”, a couple of days ago - and it is still “active” in my head! What a debut! Wish we didn’t have to wait to find out what comes next for all the characters who are not easily forgotten. The book is beautifully written, and the characters, some real and some fictive, from a good 1000 years ago, are “real people”. You can love them, like them, or hate them, but it is hard to be indifferent. Hailing from Viking stock, this book holds a very special interest for me, and it is evident on all pages that an enormous amount of research went into the creation of this volume 1. If you are interested in history, the book is very satisfying. If you just like a great story full of well-developed characters and an exciting plot, you won’t be disappointed. It is so very nice to see somebody make the effort and do the research to portray the people from the Viking Era as something more than the wild and marauding “beasts” that we are used to meeting on screen and paper. One of the very valuable qualities of this book is that it makes you curious about the people, places and customs that you read about. I have been traveling on Google Earth to find the places mentioned, looked up information about some of the stated facts, and I have studied my family tree which goes back to before the days of the people who the book is based upon. One person mentioned in the book is on my chart of genealogy!“Viking – The Green Land” will be my next pick for my book club, because I know my fellow readers will also enjoy it. Katie has graciously offered to be available via skype when we have the book club meeting, and I know she will be happy to extend the same offer to other book clubs. Now, when was the last time you actually had a chance for a live line to the author of a book pick??

A Viking story of 444 pages was not something I would have normally chosen but I know the author and try to support people I know in their endeavors. My goal was to start early August so I could finish by the end of August, expecting a slow read. Was I surprised! I finished it in 4 days, grabbing a chapter or two whenever I could. Reading into the night and again with coffee in the morning. The story line shows much research, some trite moments but very few, twists and turns, very little predictability, use of "Viking" words I looked up on Google and history. I rarely read forwards or afterwords. Epilogues only if short. I read all of them including Katie's Authors Notes. I will recommend this as a fireside read in winter or a beach read in summer. The characters had life and generated feelings of support and dislike. I marked page 230. As a CA transplant from Southern PA, I felt the pleasure of a rainy day. Thanks Katie, look forward to your next novel.

A most unusual and impressive "first effort" by a new author, this novel is based on the history of Erik the Red, who, sailing from Iceland in the tenth century as one "outlawed" for crimes committed, "discovered" Greenland and eventually established a Norse or Viking settlement there. The known historical facts are few and the author has therefore filled in the blanks with very imaginative but mostly believable detail to create an engrossing story of this man and this period. Highly recommended to anyone interested in the period, and the author promises a second volume, continuing the story to include the life of Erik's son, Leif the Lucky, who would eventually lead exploration and attempted settlement by Greenlanders in North America on what we know as Newfoundland. I for one am hoping she can get the second volume out in a reasonable short time.

What a great read! I thought it was a great story, and enjoyed the way the first part unfolded almost like a mystery. Who are the characters? Why are they here? What is the hidden truth about their voyage? The second part of the story unfolded like an adventure, with self-reflection and hope for what the future may hold.I really relate to the Fishgirl - and she is a character I think many women will relate to. I tend to read mostly science fiction, and often times women are either completely absent or written about in a kind of patronizing or over-the-top way....not so in this book. In stories that tend to be dominated by men, it was refreshing to have a such a strong woman. The Fishgirl is a woman who understands she couldn't use physical strength, so she used her position and her brains to do what she had to. She is also strong despite her fears, which is true courage.I also really liked the imagined "first contact" and the lessons that might have been learned.
