"Why do they do that?"Ignorance of religious and moral traditions beyond one's own inspires in many people misunderstanding and even fear. The question extends beyond matters of religious practice to what motivates people's actions. In Moral Traditions: An Introduction to World Religious Ethics, Mari Rapela Heidt discusses the moral traditions and ethical teachings of six key religious traditions, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Christian, Islamic, and Chinese, As well as the possibly less familiar Sikh, Jain, Bahá'í, and Shinto. While one may act morally without being religious, religion is a powerful influence on human behavior. Learning about the history, art, and major beliefs of the world's many religious traditions is a good start but does not go far enough. One also needs to understand how those beliefs translate into human actions, and how one's own actions toward others are perceived. Misunderstandings of human actions breeddivision and distrust, making this study of the moral underpinnings of the different religious traditions essential reading. Moral Traditions: An Introduction to World Religious Ethics is a book that will both satisfy students' initial curiosity and spark in them an interest in learning more about the world's great religions, their ethical teachings and moral traditions.

Fantastic! “Moral Traditions” is a concise introduction to comparative religious ethics of the world. This book is short, informative, and very readable. It makes an ideal companion text – possibly even a good primary text – for the introduction of major world religions in the ethical viewpoint. Some books this size are too light and just blather. Not this one. This I found to be compactly rich and engaging. There are a few issues I have with it – that Loa-Tzu is the founder of Daoism, for example, but otherwise it seemed accurate. As a teacher of world religions myself I certainly recommend this book for your own interests or as a college text. (The text covers an intro theory of ethics, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Christian, and Muslim traditions, as well as Chinese Religions, an a few brief words on Sikhism, Jainism, Shinto and Bahai).

This was one of two textbooks in an undergraduate course in religious studies that was chosen to complement the course. I found that this book will benefit anyone regardless of what religious tradition they adhere to. It is as stated, an introduction and not a comprehensive study but it is well written for this purpose.

A little apologetic on some of the inherent discrimintation present in many of the world's religions, but a great overview to overcome "religious illiteracy."

I would recommend this book. It is a good review of our world's religions and moral issues. I received it in good condition.

Easy to read and understand. A great entry level book for a World Religions and Ethics!
