Interesting premise. Mr. Darcy's insult of Elizabeth Bennet at this Meryton assembly has as much to do with her girth as her "tolerable" beauty. He even notes her lack of self-discipline in repeated trips to the refreshment table. When Elizabeth overhears Darcy's comments, she is devastated but recovers well enough to dance with Mr. Bingley, who is gracious enough to request the next set. We learn she rarely gets asked to dance, that her gowns are getting too tight, and that it's the willowy Jane who loves to walk every day. Elizabeth embarks on a weight reducing regimen, limiting how much she eats and joining Jane on her twice-a-day rambles in early mornings and in the afternoons. The departure from canon goes well beyond just Elizabeth's weight. A London outbreak of influenza travels to Hertfordshire, and both Jane and Darcy come down with it. Elizabeth finds herself at Netherfield tending to her sister and reading aloud to Mr. Darcy (with proper chaperones, of course). She learns that he actually admires her, but she has trouble believing it because of her low self-esteem. Dr. Beckett enters the story as Darcy's personal physician who is immediately drawn to both Miss Bennet and Miss Elizabeth and becomes a viable rival for the latter's affections. The author writes beautifully, and I appreciate the relevant Old and New Testament quotations that precede each chapter.Unfortunately, I find the story itself to be frustratingly uneven. Some plot points work really well, while some are introduced but then never fully explored. It's not always believable and goes pretty over-the-top toward the end.For example, Jane does not make it all the way to tea with the Bingley sisters before she succumbs to the bad weather while traveling on horseback, ending up in the arms of Darcy and then Bingley to get her to warmth and safety at a Meryton inn. There's lots of narration at this point that gossip could spread describing this as a compromise, but it's never mentioned again. Yet a similar, less public incident involving Elizabeth and a gentleman on the grounds near Netherfield quickly threatens HER reputation.Deep into the book, there's a significant letter to Elizabeth that disappears and mysteriously turns up a few days later. While Darcy has a strong guess as to who took it and then replaced it and the apparent reasons, there is no confrontation, and his suspicion is never confirmed. Also, there's curiously little reaction to the announcement of the betrothal between Darcy and Elizabeth from those who would be upset about it. Caroline virtually disappears from the story, although she remains at Netherfield along with the rest of the original residents there and reportedly shifts her marital hopes to someone else. Mr. Collins objects on Lady Catherine's behalf (and assumably writes immediately to notify her), and Darcy places an announcement in the newspapers, yet we never hear a peep from her.Mr. Wickham makes his appearance fairly late, and the whole trajectory of the plot abruptly goes off on a melodramatic tangent. His history with the Darcy family remains unchanged. but his storyline here takes a decidedly more melodramatic route. As someone who's struggled to control weight my whole adult life, I applaud the idea of Elizabeth having a less-than-perfect figure. And Darcy makes it clear he loves her regardless of her size. Great!I am less thrilled that, once Elizabeth determines she WILL lose weight, she just about starves herself. As far as the reader knows, she never goes off her self-imposed diet. Never once suffers a setback or seems seriously tempted to overeat. Without exception, every member of the support group I was in had some "bad days" where we overate. With Elizabeth's size and her resulting lack of confidence being central to the plot, I wish it gave a more accurate portrayal of how difficult it is to change lifelong poor eating habits.Bottom line is that I loved the basic idea for this story but was disappointed in the execution despite the obvious high quality of Ms. Helm's writing.

Thoroughly enjoyed this variation of Austen's classic by Robin Helm. In this story, a few character traits are different from what we have come to love. Without giving too much away, let's just say that Elizabeth isn't a fan of walking or exercise, and when she hears Darcy's assembly hall put down, she begins to question certain things which have been on her mind for a while. Both she and Darcy are as headstrong as ever, and split narratives allow us to see what's going on in not just Elizabeth's head, but Darcy's as well (something I personally enjoy in fan fictions). The setting for this story is completely in Hertfordshire, between Longbourn and Netherfield, so no journeying to Pemberley, but there is enough action going on that you don't really even notice it. A twist in the story puts another contender for Elizabeth's hand into play, and let's face it, who doesn't love a good love triangle? Who will Elizabeth choose? Read the book and find out!

As others have said, this is a fun retelling of P&P with some creative plot twists. Darcy offends Elizabeth originally by referring to her weight. He soon changes his mind and realizes that he is the one with too much--too much pride. But it takes Elizabeth time to work through her feelings of being not good enough. Each chapter starts with an appropriate Bible verse or traditional saying. I enjoyed the characters, who I think were pretty consistent with the originals, as they interacted in new situations. And I enjoyed the development of themes such as not judging by appearances. Entertaining, clean, and thoughtful.

I give the story 3.5 stars rounded up to 4. Neither Darcy or Lizzy were particularly likable, and her second suitor was somewhat likable but wasn’t very careful of Lizzy’s reputation.Even toward the end of the book Lizzy remains easy to anger and misunderstanding every new event.Well written characters hard to root for.certainly no Cinderella or Prince here. Prickly people who all seem to be intelligent but short on wisdom.Darcy and Bingley are in London for a couple of days for business and Lizzy and Jane are still walking unescorted even though they know Wickham is dangerous. Sigh 😔
