ah yes. edward abbey don't make like this any more. we're in the age of pc . can't decide if these are cowboy stories or classic lit.elements of both i guess. good slice of life stories. here's someone who lived his life just as he saw fit. he loved the s.w. u.s. passionately.here's some of his best observations of life in these united states circa 1970. we were still free.well worth the time and money to read. you'll learn something.look no caps ( i have decided that this uses fewer electrons and is thus better for the environment ) he he ho ho

OK. To fully appreciate this accumulation of experiences and stories... you need to plan a trip to Southern Utah. ( Go during a "shoulder" season so you will not have too many crowds ). You really need to actually be there. To see the horizons and stirring landscapes. And you will need to let go of any preconceived attitudes about deserts - any requirements for 5-Star anything. Take this book along and read a few chapters each evening. And you will need to allow yourself enough time to just sit... listen.. and reflect. Visit Moab and the Arches N.P. and imagine how it once was not too long ago. Head off to Dead Horse Point and then down to the Needles area - both in Canyonlands N.P. If you can, camp for a night or two. Look for the La Sal Range on the eastern horizon. In this way, I think you will develop a better appreciation for Mr. Abbey's world. A couple of chapters might be considered a bit off point, but that's all part of the experience. So --- get the book, plan your adventure... and, if the Southwest is a new experience for you, I believe you will come back home with some remarkable impressions. All enhanced by "Desert Solitude".

I heard about this book at a party and just the way people talked about it fascinated me! These guys are true wanderers and adventurers, not big readers, and they LOVED this book. I heard that it was hard to get into because it is a memoir by a man who moved to almost completely undeveloped National Park in the desert and fell in love with it and wrote about it. The incredible thing is, he turned out to be a prolific writer who loved his subject and expresses his love in such moving, lyrical yet unsentimental and masculine fashion that you can't help but fall in love too.I am a huge annotator of books, and love to highlight and mark comments next to passages in all my books that I want to return to. The whole book is like that for me. Every sentence shows the rare, sublime mystery of shadows, lights, passing moments of a living and breathing planet that accepts and watches all who travel through, inviting them to delve into the secrets and profound truths that only the wilderness can teach us. Now more than ever, we need to remember why America is so unutterably fragile, beautiful and worth protecting.

Desert Solitaire: A Season in the Wilderness by Edward Abbey has a much deserved reputation of being one of the finest book written about the American West. Abbey spent time as a park ranger in Arches National Park in the late 60s, and in the process, traveled all around southern Utah and northern Arizona. This book is the outcome of that stay, yet it is so much more.Abbey uses this book as a platform not only to make observations about the geography, fauna and flora of Utah, but as a place to vent his spleen at the destruction of the natural world, and the dehumanizing nature of our society. The book is also filled with humor, pathos, and great sensitivity. His prose is elastic, conversational at some points, poetic and profound at others.Desert Solitaire is a master piece of non-fiction. Abbey moves from topic to topic with ease. Each piece stands alone, but they are interconnected. In a relatively short amount of space, he writes strongly and convincingly about a host of topics. For this skill, we can forgive him his obvious misanthropy. He hates everyone.

Not much to add that has not already been written by other reviewers. An excellent book. A real classic. The book gives greater meaning to recent arguments regarding "roadless" national parks. It may be this is when/where the argument first started. Abbey's views may be a bit extreme, but his points of contention have likely lead to healthy compromises and positive outcomes. Those who were raised in the city that read this book may be enlightened, others may never get it. In the book, Abbey uses the term, anthropocentric. I had to look it up. I've concluded Abbey's book begs the question, "Are humans, due to their superior intelligence, entitled to forcibly control nature and alter natural processes, or should humans, like all other species, adapt and defer to the power and wonder of nature?"

I liked this book because it was like an adventure from my chair. Through this book I visited places I'll never visit in real life. It's essentially a book of essays, but told in a way that it kind of weaves a whole story. His descriptions are interesting and it's a fun ride.But I never looked forward to it and had to force myself to finish. The author himself kept getting in the way of his own stories. I'm not even talking about his political rants (which I expected and were interesting to consider, even if I didn't always agree). I felt like I was listening to a teenager trying to impress me with how he's so rough and rugged, that he can hike 40 miles in 2 days fueled only by a can of beans and a blade of grass and half a bottle of water. I strained my eyes from rolling them too many times.

This book is a fairly concise but informative systematic review of periodontal diagnosis and various treatment modalities. The main body the text mostly consists of the authors' reviews of literature regarding various topics, and all of the sources are well documented. This makes it a great overview as well as a gateway into finding published articles on whatever relevant topic may interest you.Not surprisingly considering the title, the book is somewhat light on the gritty details of each and every scenario you may encounter during surgery, but it's still a great review/primer. As a general dentist who does some periodontal surgery, it was 'deep' enough to learn from but did not get lost in clinically-irrelevant microbiology or epidemiology like some other perio books.It only gets four stars because Coen's Atlas of Periodontal Surgery has good lit review too, but also has more numerous and higher quality photos and drawings. This book's lit review and the author's opinions are a bit more thorough, so it really depends on what you're looking for.

The weighty tome is well printed on quality art paper and fully bound in the manner of books that need to cope with frequent viewings. It is an impressive account of a recent period that will never come again but will remain the source of interest to anyone with any curiosity of how the fabulously rich lived at home or on vacation. This book is not cheap but is highly recommended to anyone with an interest in this subject as the content will keep the reader absorbed for many delightful hours.

An ok book but I expected more color photos and in depth articles about each house. The little articles are very short paragraphs with small photos.

In 1996, Murdock used an experimental procedure--which involved removing stem cells from his bone marrow, cleaning them with chemotherapy and radiation and then reintroducing the cleansed cells back into the marrow--to treat his advanced lymphoma. What made his case so unusual was that, at the time, he was CEO of CellPro, a Seattle-based biotechnology company experimenting with the very procedure, separating cancer cells from stem cells, needed to save his life. With the assistance of Fisher (coauthor with George Burns of All My Best Friends), Murdock dramatically describes how a team of CellPro scientists raced frantically to finish what they called "the Rick Project"--although the researchers calculated they were nine months away from refining their cell separation device, they were able to perfect it in just eight weeks. As Murdock began using these newly developed technologies to fight for his life, a giant multinational corporation was suing CellPro for patent infringement. Although a jury had unanimously sided with CellPro, the judge overturned the verdict, finding CellPro guilty. As a result, shortly after Murdock finished his treatment, CellPro was effectively out of business--and the device that saved his life was no longer available. Overall, PATIENT NUMBER ONE is a compelling, dramatic true story that is fast-paced and socially relevant. Though story's most intense moments are played out over laboratory beakers and in the pages of patent infringement law-it's a fascinating read. The subject matter is on par with films like THE INSIDER, bringing to light some very ugly but very timely truths about big business and our legal system.The premise-- that a CEO whose life was saved by the very technology his company invented, must battle big business to save that same company- is a true David vs. Goliath story, but one with a bittersweet ending.The people in the story are very compelling, mostly because of the hardships they face and overcome, rather than because of their uniqueness or likability. For example, the protagonist Richard is a rather bland corporate executive, and one who was lucky enough to be in exactly the right place when cancer struck. I empathize with him only because of the complete unfair tactics that are waged against him, not because I necessarily identify with a CEO of a tech firm. The most interesting characters are the scientists at CellPro in charge of saving their boss' life. This task and its pressures are the most riveting aspects of the book, and make for a brilliant read.

A trully remarkable, and extremely ironic story that keeps the reader entranced, and at times outraged with our own legal system. A much more inticing story than that of "A Civil Action" or "The Insider", given the authors own fight for survival. Anyone will have a hard time putting it down!

Although the ghost writer of this tale did yeoman's work, I was overwhelmed on every page by what was between the lines: Rick Murdock would have died from this disease had he not been a rich and powerful CEO of a company that specialized in this treatment area. The average person, that is to say all patients who do not fall into the top 10 percent of wage earners in this country, are subjected to health care that has become increasingly rationed. Mr. Murdock ought to thank his lucky stars and donate the proceeds from his (the ghost writer's) book to hospice.

While all of Scott Pratt's Joe Dillard books are excellent, for me this one was the best yet. Sister Sarah played a minor role, and even THAT was surprising and satisfying. I could not put this book down! Wow, what a lot of "YES!!!" moments, the kind of scenes where you almost cheer out loud. I totally LOVED everything in this book from start to finish. Compelling, high-integrity, BRIGHT characters taking on stupid, very mean bad guys and the good guys win. They normally do, but it's HOW they win in this one that makes this book such a terrific read! Really, REALLY well done, Scott! Now on to No. 4.... Keep 'em coming!!!!!!!!

This review is about Scott Pratt’s Joe Dillard series, or at least the first 4 that I have read. It is a terrific series, right up there with the Jessie Stone (William Parker), Harry Bosch (Michael Connelly) and Joe Picket (C. J. Box). If you like lawyer/courtroom or police procedurals or regular guy heroics or the twists and turns of a good mystery, then you’ll like Scott Pratt’s Joe Dillard series. He’s got it all. The writing is really good. It moves at a good pace (as Elmore Leonard advised in his list of how to write a good book) leaving out the stuff readers tend to skip over. I live in Tennessee as the main character Joe Dillard does and there is no false note in the characters or the dialogue. As sparse as the writing is, there is plenty of character development and credibility as to the legal system and investigation techniques. Believability is 100%. My only advice is to kill off the sister Sarah. Like with a alcoholic uncle, I’d participate in an intervention once, twice or even maybe three times and after that, the hell with him. Even Michael Connelly killed off Bosch’s ex-wife. Jessie Stone has quit dragging around thoughts of his ex-wife. But hey, that’s no deal breaker. We all have our cross to bear and Joe Dillard has his sister… plus the other usual accumulated baggage that makes him a believable human worth taking a journey with on the pages of a book.

I accidentally came across Scott Pratt and The Joe Dillard series. Wow were to start. First I may have previously written one or two author reviews, but as an avid reader of political/crime, this hit the complete TOP for me. I'm five days in and cannot stop reading. Mr. Pratt has hit every mark I need to consider a book worth my time. I love Joe Dillard, he may be a fictitious character, but I so want there to be men like him in this world. The twists and turns in this series are not always predictable. The principles of law are clear and concise. He has a way of being descriptive, just enough to set the scene without having to explain every detail that would normally have me skipping ahead out of boredom. He definitely knows the people and dialects of the area. I was born in Kentucky and have family all over this region, so I can truly appreciate the art of capturing their charm. Okay, thanks Scott. I have to get back to book five. Eventually, I'm going to be all caught up. I'll be not so patiently waiting for your next book!

Some weeks ago I was perusing the new books and looking for some of my favorite authors but their books won't be available for several weeks. What to do for reading? Well, I'll try one of the older books just as a bridge until my favs come out. Well, I came across a series of books by Scott Pratt and decided to order his first of the Joe Dillard series thinking I'll try this one and then surely go onto something else. After reading this my next "something else" was the second of the series and I've just completed the third. I really don't recall the last time I got so much enjoyment meeting new people like Dillard, his family, and his associates. Each of the series is so addictive that you just can't wait for the next one. Dillard starts out as a defense attorney but much changes as the series continue. You feel the characters becoming good friends. Their lives become important and you can't help but root for them as some face some major obstacles. His legal cases are well thought out and character development is extraordinary. Several different law cases weave in and out but you never become lost in remembering them the next time they appear.I'm sure I will read every Dillard book. Start with the first one and I'm kind of certain you'll go on to the next. Very highly recommended.

This third in the Joe Dillard series is as compelling as the first two, but in some ways it was hard not to be depressed by the injustice that drives the story. This is a book about the failure of the law to protect the innocent, about power, quest for fame, and arrogance that can corrupt the law. A defense attorney, a friend of Joe's, life is ruined by an arrogant judge, the same judge who has flaunted his power and hidden behind that black robe. The district attorney, whom Joe serves, helps to corrupt the system as do other powerful men. Joe is in the cross-hairs, even fired, for his inability to go along with what he sees as the injustices. Given Mr. Pratt's law background, it is even more evident to the reader that these things really can happen. There is a lot of bloodshed along the way, a lot of heartache, but Joe does triumph. Now, as appointed district attorney, I cannot wait to find out how he elevates the office and proceeds to mete out justice. On to the next book!

Many of the illuminations in this text are also in The Golden Haggadah - refer to the latter for the art history and criticism related to the illuminations.This volume is a traditional Haggadah in Hebrew and English with illuminations from Medieval texts in the British Library.
