Well written book about living in the wilderness without modern conveniences.

A classic in wilderness living. A lot of good information.

If you like classic, basic wilderness skills and stories this is a must read.

I like this book.

Book is very enjoyable to read and documents former outdoor practices and some currently used skills.Calvin Rutstrum is always a pleasure to read.

I have great respect for Calvin Rutstrum and the wilderness skills about which he wrote. However, this book is not a good place to start or even a good addition to your library. It is a gear guide as opposed to a survival guide. The problem is that it was written in 1958 and he often refers to outdoor technology developed in World War II. We don't use that gear any more. There is a reason we use the expensive high-tech gear that was not available or designed when Mr. Rutstrum wrote: today's equipment is warm, waterproof, breathable and lightweight. Likewise, this book focuses on canoe travel or camping with pack animals. You might outfit a cabin or winter camp with his "essentials" list, but if you carry your camping gear you'll need ten Sherpas to lug all that equipment into the wilds. In fairness, he suggests that backpackers need to be very selective when considering his list. A better Rutstrum book might be Paradise Below Zero, which would make all but walking corpses want to snow camp.

I had a copy of the book 35 years ago and over the years I've found its information to be very useful. Sure, it's dated... But if I was lost in the wild, without a North Face tent, Gore-Tex jacket or a titanium sierra stove, there'as a good chance I could survive just on what I've read in this book. Need to make a shelter? Find food? Build a cabin? Paddle a canoe? It's all here. Highly recommended!

I had to put it down to eat dinner! This novel will take you on a remarkable journey in which you will find hope in the face of fear, love in the shadows of hate, and forgiveness in a heart filled with despair. Keely tells a story of a remarkably strong young boy, Ricky, who was kidnapped by the LRA and pressed on through the trials and torture he faced as a child soldier in Joseph Kony's war. Ricky's strength of mind and spirit serve as his guide as he tries to find 'Obeno' (home) once again. This novel should be in the hands of everyone...adults and students.

Soldier Boy is a book that needed to be written and needs to be read by everyone - adults and young adults as well. The resiliency of one man (Ricky Richard Anywar) in the face of so much adversity is an example for us all. In addition, the author's (Keely Hutton) style of writing, articulation, and organization of the content of this book is perfect, the reader gets the sense that he/she is right there in Uganda. There is so much to be learned, on so many levels, that when finished news clippings about child abductions take on a whole new meaning and the only thing left to say is "I am so much more informed and glad that I read Soldier Boy".

I think this book should be read in every school so that kids in this country would know how fortunate they are. There was some violence and lots of scenes that were hard to read but I finished with a feeling that I had really learned something. As the mother of three sons, I can't imagine the horror that these poor people suffered at the hands of really evil people. I commend Keeley Hutton for writing this book. It must have been very difficult.

Last night I finished reading Keely Hutton's SOLDIER BOY. Actually, I completed it at 3AM, because I couldn't put it down. I'm so impressed with Keely's commitment to her craft and her gift as a writer. Despite the agony in those pages, she pulled me through, with her amazing ability to find just the right words. And the hope both she and Ricky Richard Anywar offer. Though there are violent scenes (it IS real, after all), nothing is gratuitous. And the alternating stories create a perfect balance. Well done!

Not only is this a great book, but the author is such a gem! She took the time to Skype with my 10th grade English class and they were hanging on her every word. Some of my most reluctant readers were passing around this book, very interested in it.

A very powerful book- I highly recommend. Heartbreaking and shocking at times. Beyond distressing that such unspeakable atrocities can occur in our modern world. What an amazing human being to find a way to show acts of kindness amidst such horror and rise above it to help others. Really inspiring. Thank you Keely Hutton for sharing Ricky's amazing story.

This book is at times overwhelming but is a must read. Constant action and good narrative. It is such a sad situation in Uganda and any nation that kidnaps children to fight wars. What Ricky and the others witness at such a young age is beyond belief. Keely Hutton's writing and this story highlight the need for all of us to support the orphans and the children who are so misused in this world.

This is without a doubt one of the best books I have read in years. It is based on what really happened and I encourage all to read it. High School English teachers: this would be an excellent book for your students to read and discuss. Keely is an up and coming author. I cnnot wait to read her next book!

Sam Galvagno completed an Internship in Emergency Medicine at St. Clare's hospital in New York in September, 2001, where he remained active in EMT training until he left for military service at the end of that year. It sits comfortably between a textbook and a reference book. Each section begins with a physiology section, followed by chapters on specific diseases / disorders. Chapters are detailed enough that you will surely come away with something new, but they are also short enough to make it digestable and easy to reference. Even the chapter on acute MI is only about 15 pages long before detailed references and review questions. Treatment options are covered in detail for the ailment being discussed along with well-documented analysis of the effectiveness of said treatments. It might be a tough read if you are not already familiar with some pathophysiology but this has to be the best patho text specifically for prehospital care. One of the few I have actually read cover to cover.

We've been using this book in my paramedic class along with a few other pathophysiology textbooks/references. I'm halfway through this book and convinced it's worth its weight in gold. If your concerned about not knowing what are the "important parts" to study in your monstrous pathophysiology texts, this book solves your problems. It's got what you "need to know " divided into 30 sections that are each about 12 pages long. And in such a short time the author still manages to tie in the clinical relevance and the current standards in treatment. Very manageable chunks of info whether you're a student looking to tie it all together or just need a quick review of some pathophys. As a student you'll still need your other books, but in terms of quantity & quality material covered vs. hours spent studying, this book certainly gives you the most bang for your buck.

This is one of the most amazing Emergency Medical resources ever made. EVERY EMT, Parmedic, and Emergency Physician should read this book while they are in school. I think it should be a mandatory part of the Paramedic Curriculum. If you are an EMT and are thinking of going to Paramedic next, this book is a PERFECT first step into ALS care.

Dr. Galvagno's Emergency Pathophysiology was an excellent resource for myself during paramedic school and continues to be a go-to reference since I have been in the field. He covers pathophysiology topics in a concise, easy to understand manner that somehow spares none of the important details. While this text is not a definitive reference for pathophysiology, it is a must have adjunct for all levels of prehospital providers!

I have shelves and shelves of Prehospital/Paramedic texts, but for me, this one stands out as my absolute favorite. I have been through it several times and I still enjoy reading it. It takes some tough information and presents it in a way that really sticks with you.Dr. Galvagno does not waste your time with minutia, but takes everycondition and succintly outlines the what, why, and how.I highly recommend this book.

This book is a hard to beat reference to aid in understanding common emergency conditions. It was recommended by my instructor and I'm very glad I took his advice in reading it.

I no longer felt like I was the crazy one plus I saw how I played a role in it. This book is a keeper. I need it for future reference into any other relationships I'm thinking of being part of. I'm so grateful for this book!

I didn't expect much from this book. I'm just beginning a separation from my husband and trying to navigate a lot of unknowns, including why my heart is hurting so much since it's my decision to leave. Although there are more pat-phrases and absolutes than I'm usually comfortable with (knitting circles are made up of angry man-hating cat-loving hags*), there were several insights that were so brilliant and spot-on that I highlighted them and read them out loud to my therapist.
